  • Romney, on immigration, rewrites some history

It was only a couple of months ago that Mitt Romney told a Republican debate audience in Arizona that the state was a “model” for the nation on immigration. If elected president, he said, he would immediately drop the lawsuits that the Obama administration has filed “against Arizona and other states that are trying to do the job Barack Obama isn’t doing.” That was then. This is now.

Madison -- The Court of Appeals declined to take up a Dane County case Wednesday that blocked the state's new law requiring people to show photo ID at the polls. The latest order is a further setback for those who support the voter ID law, and is another sign the law almost surely will remain halted for the May 8 primaries and June 5 recall elections. Dane County Circuit Judge David Flanagan temporarily enjoined the voter ID law last month, saying the Milwaukee branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and immigrant rights group Voces de...

The 4th Ave Jail in Maricopa County, AZ is on lockdown after "a large scale fight involved 25 Hispanic and black inmates broke out" yesterday as reported by KSAZ: "the Mexican Mafia inmates are allegedly putting out orders to all Hispanic inmates to refuse to be housed with black inmates and to beat them up." The racial tension between Latino and black gang members has been a long-standing problem for prison officials across the country. Earlier this year 300 inmates were involved in a race riot at Kern Valley State Prison in Delano, CA after members from Southern Hispanics and...
  • Even Liberal Justice Sotomayor Shredded The Govt's Arguments Against Arizona's Immigration Law

Signs it's not going well for this government and Solicitor General Donald Verrilli at the Supreme Court: when a traditionally liberal judge appointed by Barack Obama has no idea of the argument they're trying to make. Enter Justice Sonia Sotomayor: "Putting aside your argument that this -- that a systematic cooperation is wrong -- you can see it's not selling very well -- why don't you try to come up with something else?" she said to Verrilli. "Because I, frankly -- as the chief has said to you, it's not that it's forcing you to change your enforcement priorities. You don't have to take...

Supreme Court justices took a dim view of the Obama administration’s claim that it can stop Arizona from enforcing immigration laws, telling government lawyers during oral argument Wednesday that the state appears to want to push federal officials, not conflict with them. The court was hearing arguments on Arizona’s immigration crackdown law, which requires police to check the immigration status of those they suspect are in the country illegally, and would also write new state penalties for illegal immigrants who try to apply for jobs. The Obama administration has sued, arguing that those provisions conflict with the federal government’s role in setting...
  • Valedictorian Facing Deportation Cool to Rubio's DREAM Act Redo

As he starts to preview what his alternative to the DREAM Act will look like, Sen. Marco Rubio often mentions the story of Daniela Pelaez, an 18-year-old valedictorian and aspiring molecular biologist who faces deportation because she is undocumented, as an example for why such a plan needs to be developed. But Pelaez, whose attendance at Dartmouth hinges on her ability to stay in the country, doesn't believe the sketch of Rubio's plan goes far enough. In an interview with ABC News, Pelaez expressed displeasure with the glimpse Rubio has offered of his upcoming proposal, arguing that it is "wrong"...

Supreme Court justices strongly suggested Wednesday that they are ready to allow Arizona to enforce part of a controversial state law requiring police officers to check the immigration status of people they think are in the country illegally.Liberal and conservative justices reacted skeptically to the Obama administration's argument that the state exceeded its authority when it made the records check, and another provision allowing suspected illegal immigrants to be arrested without a warrant, part of Arizona law aimed at driving illegal immigrants elsewhere."You can see it's not selling very well," Justice Sonia Sotomayor told Obama administration Solicitor General Donald Verrilli.It...

Immigration: In an unusual move, Arizona's immigration law comes before the Supreme Court before its adjudication by lower courts. Will the high court let states protect their borders by enforcing federal laws the feds won't? The federal challenge to Arizona's SB 1070, the state law designed to help stem the flow of illegal aliens, is headed to an unexpectedly earlier resolution as the Supreme Court has expedited its review and begins hearing oral arguments on Wednesday. This can't be good news for an administration at war with both Arizona and the courts and already fearful that its landmark legislation, ObamaCare,...

WASHINGTON -- On the eve of the Supreme Court’s hearing of the Arizona immigration law, a top Democrat vowed to take congressional action if the high court upholds the state’s tough-on-immigration statute. The proposal from Sen. Charles E. Schumer (D-N.Y.) would surely extend the immigration debate and touch off a states’ rights fight with strong opinions on either side. Should the court uphold Arizona’s SB 1070, Schumer said his proposal would prohibit states from enacting or enforcing their own immigration law penalties unless they are working in concert with the federal government. “I believe it is simply too damaging to...

  • Strong border controls and a lack of jobs prompt mass emigration of illegal Mexicans from the U.S.

    04/24/2012 6:42:50 AM PDT · by traumer · 32 replies
The number of Mexican immigrants living illegally in the U.S. has dropped significantly for the first time in decades, showing a dramatic shift as many illegal workers are moving back to Mexico from the U.S. because there are so few job opportunities. The new analysis comes amid renewed debate over U.S. immigration policy as the Supreme Court hears arguments this week on Arizona's tough immigration law. Mexican immigrants make account for nearly 60 per cent of the illegal immigrant population in the U.S. and last year there were 6.1million in America. That number was down from its peak in 2007...

You know it's bad when...the net flow of Mexicans into the US has fallen so much that there is a high probability that it is now in reverse ending around forty years of inward migration. The Pew Hispanic Center notes that the standstill - after more than 12 million current immigrants have entered the US - more than half of whom are illegal - appears to be the result of many factors including a weakened US job and construction market, tougher border enforcement, a rise in deportations, growing dangers associated with border crossing, a long-term decline in Mexico's birth...

Sen. Charles Schumer said Tuesday he wants to overturn a Supreme Court ruling last year that allowed states to require businesses to make sure their workers are in the country legally and said Congress should also be prepared to overturn a possible future ruling favoring state enforcement of immigration laws. Speaking at a hearing on Arizona’s 2010 law cracking down on illegal immigration, Mr. Schumer said that Congress has repeatedly passed laws making clear that it, not the states, should have jurisdiction over immigration law. He said his legislation would reaffirm that stance. “I believe it is simply too damaging...

Republicans on Tuesday boycotted a Democratic-led subcommittee hearing on Arizona’s controversial immigration bill. Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas), the ranking member of the subcommittee, called the hearing “election-year theater.” He said it would do nothing to further attempts at reforming the country’s immigration system. “This is not an attempt at having a sincere hearing on the merits," Cornyn said in a statement. "Unfortunately, the Democrat majority seems to have embraced President Obama's ‘mañana’ approach to immigration reform.” Sen. Jon Kyl (R-Ariz.) also said the hearing was “strictly political theater” aimed at garnering publicity and trying to influence Wednesday’s oral arguments before...

The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey shows that 59% believe police should automatically check the immigration status of individuals they pull over for a traffic violation. One-in-three (32%) opposes such a rule. (To see survey question wording, click here.)

Apprehensions of Mexicans trying to cross the border illegally have plummeted by more than 70% in recent years The number of Mexican immigrants living illegally in the U.S. has dropped significantly for the first time in decades a new study suggests. The figures represent a dramatic shift as many illegal workers, already in the U.S. and seeing few job opportunities, are returning to Mexico. The analysis of census data from the U.S. and Mexican governments finds that roughly 6.1 million unauthorized Mexican immigrants were living in the U.S. last year. That's down from a peak of nearly 7 million in...

Senate Democrats are making plans to force a floor vote on legislation that would invalidate Arizona’s controversial immigration statute if the Supreme Court upholds the law this summer. Sen. Charles E. Schumer (D-N.Y.) will announce the fallback legislation at a hearing on the Arizona law Tuesday, a day before the Supreme Court hears oral arguments in a suit to determine whether Arizona had the authority to enact the 2010 state crackdown.

I can't keep up with what Romney is supposedly going to go with concerning illegals. First it was the ridiculous idea from Romney that illegals will self-deport. Remember Daniel D. Portado? Then there was the buzz that some kind of Kobach plan would emerge. Now there is supposedly going to be some type of Rubio Quasi-Dream Act. Who knows what Romney is going to go with. I guess more poll testing, and/or focus group work from the Romney campaign is needed before a plan emerges.

Border Patrol agents spotted the vehicle and immigrants about 9:30 a.m. Saturday off a dirt road near Farm-to-Market Road 1015 and Rio Rico Road. Agents called emergency medical services and the Progreso Police Department, according to a statement sent out by Border Patrol. Twelve people went to the hospital for precautionary measures and one refused treatment. The 12 immigrants have been released from the hospital.
