PERSPECTIVE The world's largest ISP is cutting off direct access to one of the oldest, coolest -- and strangest -- parts of the Internet. America Online has quietly announced that it will discontinue providing member access to Usenet newsgroups next month. In recent days, AOL subscribers who access keyword "Newsgroups" are greeted with a pop-up message informing them of the change: "Please Note: The AOL Newsgroup service will be discontinued in early 2005." According to a notice on AOL's Web site, the newsgroup shut-off will occur in February, severing subscribers from the thousands of discussion groups that make up Usenet....
  • AOL is scanning INSIDE your emails, blocking any with "unapproved" content

This information comes from the LangaList, a GREAT, FREE computer and technology newsletter published by Fred Langa, formerly the Editor of Byte Magazine. This AOL scanning / blocking issue has been covered in two segments so far; here is the first one: AOL Madness (Warn Your Friends) AOL is at it again. This time, it's reading *inside* its members' emails, and preemptively blocking any messages that contain links to sites that AOL doesn't want you to see. Note: I'm *not* talking about simple mail blocks, where a mail is discarded if it originates from a "forbidden" address. No: AOL is...

For education and discussion only. Not for commercial use. OKLAHOMA CITY - About 100 workers who moderate AOL's message boards and screen for objectionable online content will be laid off by the end of March, AOL spokesman Nicholas Graham said. The jobs of the Community Action Team will be moved to other America Online call centers, and possibly overseas, Graham said Wednesday. The layoffs will leave AOL with about 1,000 people at its Oklahoma City call center. "This is a planned part of our ongoing efforts to adjust AOL's member services organization to more closely align with our business goals...

Special ReportBanned by AOL   Print Friendly Format   E-Mail this to a Friend By Published 12/22/2003 12:05:50 AM For more than three years, I've run a weblog about religion, politics -- the usual non-dinner-table topics. And each December, regular as Rudolph, I diss Kwanzaa. The fake "African harvest festival" (invented by a Marxist black supremacist ex-con in 1972) is now celebrated by school kids in place of Hanukah and Christmas. Call me crazy, but I don't like that one bit. So earlier this month, I knocked off a bit of doggerel about Kwanzaa and posted it to my site. That's when the spam hit the filter....
  • I need AOL help (yeah, yeah, I know vanity) Using AOL on unsupported platforms

Since so many Freepers are so knowledgable about so many things, and since I am trying to do something AOL most certainly does not support I have no where else to turn. Does anyone know if it is possible to connect to AOL without using their propritary software?, I am going to be in the field for a few weeks and the only locally available internet connection is AOL. We have some equipment that has to "call home" several times a day to download updated information. The equipment is running inhouse developed software running on Windows CE 2.11, is it...
