An air-supported canopy over the Dallas Cowboys' practice field collapsed during a heavy thunderstorm Saturday afternoon, leaving one person critically injured and six others hurt, firefighters said. As many as 80 people may have been inside the facility when it was blown down shortly before 3:30 p.m. (4:30 p.m. ET), said Mike Adams, a dispatcher for the Irving, Texas, fire department. Rescuers were continuing to comb through the wreckage beneath the fallen canopy, but, "Everyone as far as we know is accounted for," Adams said.

WASILLA, Alaska -- The biggest project that Sarah Palin undertook as mayor of this small town was an indoor sports complex, where locals played hockey, soccer, and basketball, especially during the long, dark Alaskan winters. The only catch was that the city began building roads and installing utilities for the project before it had unchallenged title to the land. The misstep led to years of litigation and at least $1.3 million in extra costs for a small municipality with a small budget. What was to be Ms. Palin's legacy has turned into a financial mess that continues to plague Wasilla....

Riddle Of The Jade Jewels Reveals Vast Trade Arena ScienceDaily (Jan. 2, 2008) — Analysing the origins of jade used in ancient jewellery has revealed a trading arena that was active for more than 3,000 years and sprawled over 3,000km in Southeast Asia – possibly the largest such network discovered in the region to date. An international research team led by archaeologists from The Australian National University used electron probe microanalysis to examine jade earrings excavated from sites all over Southeast Asia, and were able to pinpoint the origin of the precious stone to a source in Taiwan. “People have...

A little twinge of anxiety always hits the community when the new neighbors move in. What do they do for a living? What kind of music do they listen to? Are they sociable or are they loners? Are they loud? Do they park the chassis of their beaten-up cars on blocks on the front lawn? And do they contribute money to anti-gay groups? Seattle, we have a problem. Seems a couple of the Sonics' new hefty financial backers, Aubrey McClendon and Tom Ward, have been willing to spend backup point guard money to support former Republican presidential candidate Gary Bauer's...

Ten Songs That Killed Arena Rock By Jeb Wright Arena Rock was a phenomenon born out of the failed Peace & Love moment of the 1960’s. Rock music from that era tended to be fueled by politically motivated lyrics and a desire to rebel. The Man was the enemy and The System corrupt! The younger generation turned to music to solve their problems. In the end, arrogance, greed, lust and drugs took the hippie generation from the peace and love of Woodstock to the horror of Altamont. The idealistic dream faded quickly as war in Vietnam ended and Nixon stepped...

The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena...who's face is marred by dust and sweat and blood, who strives valiantly, who errs and comes up short again and again, because there is no effort without error or shortcomings, but who knows the great enthusiasms, the great devotions, who spends himself for a worthy cause... FlashReport Managing Editor Nicholas Romero asked me to pen a column for his FlashReport [some time ago] and I must admit I was tempted to write about a post November election agenda but decided against it. At a time such as this,...

The Charlotte City Council potentially trashed a $24 million deal Tuesday night when it unanimously voted to rezone what was once the land of the Hornets. You know, the Charlotte Coliseum that sits out there on Tyvola Road like a giant white elephant the city spent in excess of $100 million to build. The property was supposed to be sold for $24 million, but now nobody’s sure what it will fetch. Last year, Crescent Resources – the development subsidiary of Duke Energy – stepped up to the plate and committed to buying the 154-acre parcel for $24 million as part...

I'm thinking the Salvation Army is going about this whole fund-raising thing all wrong.

Those fine folks are still tied to antiquated ways, depending on red kettles and warm hearts to get them what they need. They still cling to the hope that the ringing of their bells will result in the ringing of spare change outside shopping centers and grocery stores across the Valley.

TRENTON, Sept. 6 — The proposal to build a $355 million sports arena in Newark and redevelop the Meadowlands fell apart today when a key Assembly committee canceled a hearing on the issue, effectively derailing the legislation. The plan would have provided a new home for the New Jersey Nets and New Jersey Devils, and was seen as vital to helping further the renaissance of downtown Newark. But in recent weeks the plan had come under increasing scrutiny, with the Republican candidate for governor, Bret D. Schundler, warning that taxpayers might end up footing some of the bill and calling ...

County disclaims arena cost overruns $30,000 approved for laptop computers By Michael Erskine erskine@gomemphis.com December 3, 2002 The County Commission on Monday passed a resolution disavowing responsibility for any cost overruns on the downtown arena project. County Atty. Donnie Wilson said the resolution wouldn't absolve the county from any future liabilities, but commissioners passed it anyway. Also Monday, the commission voted to amend the budget to appropriate $30,000 to buy laptop computers for commissioners, though some may pay for their own. Commissioner John Willingham proposed the arena resolution, which declared that the commission "will not assume any funding responsibility for...

Wednesday, June 19, 2002 Arena's stars attracting attention Chris Borg Everyone's agreed that the last eight of the World Cup features a few teams nobody would have tipped to get this far. Arena: In quarter-finals (Allsport) Senegal? South Korea? Neither of those, surely, would have been in anybody's list of quarter-finalists - probably not even those of the most optimistic Senegalese or South Korean supporter. But America? Team USA? Sorry, but that somehow seems even more outlandish. Cast your minds back to the last World Cup - the Americans' performance was (to put it politely) unconvincing, featuring three defeats...

Don Smith, executive director of the New Memphis Arena Public Building Authority, said the agency should be abolished "if it’s not going to be given any real authority" over the $250 million project. The bulk of the money, about $190 million to...
