The massive structure - almost a mile long - contains a spiral design, with several rectangular spirals that form a giant structure, archaeologists say. "This structure, which has dimensions of more than 1,500 m × 600 m (about 1 mile by 1,970 feet) is the most striking discovery associated with Angkor Wat to date. Its function remains unknown and, as yet, it has no known equivalent in the Angkorian world," Roland Fletcher, a University of Sydney professor, said in a statement put out by the university. Today, the spiral structure is hard to make out on the ground, having been...

WARNING: some of these images are rather gory. Move over swallows, motivational quotes and giant roses on your bum – the latest tattoo trend is 'scarification'. The painful process involves removing a layer of skin and flesh with a scalpel in the shape of your desired design - and then filling the design in with ink. When the area heals over, the scar becomes an elaborate tattoo.

When Nicholas Nixon took an unremarkable group shot of his wife Bebe and her three sisters in 1975, they had no way of knowing that it was the beginning of a remarkable art project. Nixon continued to replicate the original portrait every year thereafter, documenting the effect of time on the four women. This is a selection of some of those amazing photos.

OGDEN -- You've probably seen new yellow billboards dotting the Wasatch Front as you commute or complete errands. Those billboards simply display the name and mugshot of William Harrison, ninth President of the United States, and list a website: 9thpresident.com. Is this an end-of-the-world call to repentance? A tabloid page designer with too much time and money to spare? No, it's simply a marketing study for the sign owners, Reagan Outdoor Advertising. RELATED: What is the pole on 40th St. and Monroe Blvd. in South Ogden?Visitors to 9thpresident.com find the methodology of the four-phase study, which, simply put, randomly surveys...

As mentioned on an earlier Happy Hour podcast, I have a giant collection of iPad styluses, having tested dozens of them since the first iPad debuted in 2010. Earlier this week, my colleague Zac Hall reviewed the best (and most expensive) iPad stylus, Apple’s brand-new $99 Apple Pencil, which is hard to find in stores, and only works with the 12.9″ iPad Pro.Since the Apple Pencil is two to six times as expensive as some other options, I wanted to spotlight its key strengths and weaknesses relative to rivals, all of which are more broadly compatible and readily available to purchase. During testing,...

From cakewalks to carols, historic sounds of all kinds are preserved at the University of California, Santa Barbara's Cylinder Audio Archive, home to a vast collection of recordings. The UCSB Library first made this archive available online in 2005, but it recently launched a new website that now features over 10,000 cylinder recordings - all available to download or stream online for free. Cylinders, as the website explains, are what people listened to "before MP3s, CDs, cassettes and vinyl records - First made of tinfoil, then wax and plastic, cylinder recordings, commonly the size and shape of a soda can, were...

    YouTube ^ | 22 Nov 15 | Warren Zevon and Linda Ronstadt
Linda Ronstadt - Poor Poor Pitiful Me "Poor Poor Pitiful Me" is a rock song written and originally recorded by Warren Zevon in 1976. It is best known as one of Linda Ronstadt's signature hits from 1978. Country music singer Terri Clark scored a hit in 1996 with her own cover of the song. There have also been many other versions of this song. In keeping with Warren Zevon's sardonic lyrical style, the song's verses deal with a failed suicide, domestic abuse, and a brush with sadomasochism. The song first appeared on Zevon's 1976 self-titled solo album. It is reputed...

New York Times writer Maureen Dowd lambasted Hollywood as a "sick society" that clings to a myth of liberal values while it persists in excluding women from many aspects of the entertainment business. The New York Times Magazine on Friday published a 7,000-word piece by the famed columnist about the role of women in Hollywood. Dowd interviewed nearly 100 women for the piece, describing their experiences in an industry where women continue to have second-class status. She cited the shocking statistic that in 2013 and 2014 only 1.9 percent of the directors of the 100 top-grossing films were women, a situation...
