The Federal Reserve said yesterday it would provide $60 billion in fresh cash to commercial banks in two auctions in February and will keep holding auctions every other week for as long as needed to ease the credit crisis. The Feb. 11 and Feb. 25 auctions will mark the fifth and sixth time the Fed has used a new-auction process announced in December to provide cash-strapped banks with extra reserves. In a brief statement, the Fed said it intended to keep holding the auctions every other week "for as long as necessary to address elevated pressures in short-term funding markets."...

NEW YORK -- A 3 1/4-inch limestone lion from ancient Mesopotamia fetched the highest price ever paid at an auction for a sculpture - $57 million. Sotheby's had estimated that the Guennol Lioness would bring up to $18 million. The tiny figure, found at a site near Baghdad, had been on loan from Alastair and Edith Martin to the Brooklyn Museum of Art for nearly 60 years. It is thought to be at least 5,000 years old. The family decided to sell the lion for financial planning reasons, the auction house said. It was sold through a charitable trust set...

A man who purchased 41 tapes from the B.C. government found himself the unexpected owner of 77,000 personal medical files. The tapes included records such as HIV status, substance abuse history and mental illness. The man bought the tapes at a public government auction with the intention of selling them. The man, who assumed the tapes were blank when he purchased them, handed them over to the Vancouver Sun when he realized the information they contained. Minister of Labour Mike de Jong said an investigation is underway into how the sensitive records ended up on the auction block. "It is...

SAN FRANCISCO -- A federal appeals court on Thursday skirted answering whether Yahoo Inc. must pay a fine of about $15 million to a Paris court for displaying Nazi memorabilia for sale in violation of French law. The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals dismissed a federal lawsuit brought by Yahoo in California challenging the fine levied five years ago for running an auction site in which French users could buy and sell the memorabilia banned in France. ABU DHABI -- A camel was sold for $185,000 at an auction in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), where camel racing is hugely popular, a newspaper reported on Wednesday. Mohammed Bin Taloub "chose carefully" among the camels on offer at the auction in the UAE capital of Abu Dhabi on Tuesday before stumping up 680,000 dirhams, said Gulf News, published in nearby Dubai. The sister of the prized male camel fetched just some $8,000 "because she was only his half-sister. They had the same mother but different fathers. The father of the male camel was much stronger," according to one...

eBay sellers sounded off about rising fees and Chinese counterfeits at the auction site's annual user conference on Friday while rival Overstock.com sent an ad-slathered car to the event to lure disgruntled eBay sellers. eBay, the site that pioneered the online auction revolution 10 years ago, is facing increasing competition from auction and other stores at Overstock, Yahoo and Amazon.com. Also putting pressure on eBay is Google, which is working on an online payment service and whose paid search listing and advertising services are a big draw for Web merchants. Amid the flag-waving and boosterism by eBay fans were grumblings...

Last October, New York City officials held a special auction of 27 heavily discounted taxi medallions that could be used only with cabs powered by natural gas or by a combination of gasoline and electricity. Eighteen of the licenses were sold, at an average price of $222,743, one-third less than the cost of a regular medallion. The Taxi and Limousine Commission praised the program as a first step toward the reduction of harmful emissions. One problem: The commission never got around to approving any alternative-fuel vehicles for use as taxicabs. It is now trying to back away from the sale,...

SAN JOSE, California, April 20, 2005 (LifeSiteNews.com) – eBay confirmed to LifeSiteNews.com today that the company voluntarily cancelled a listing for a consecrated Host. It was not clear at the time of this publishing that the company policy had changed to ban all similar sales. A customer representative named Joshua, when asked why he thought eBay pulled the listing, told LifeSiteNews.com that “it could have been the eight or nine thousand complaints we received.” The cancellation is no doubt the result of backlash from faithful Catholics – outraged at the offence this had caused – but is likely also in...

On Friday I posted a regular old auction on Ebay. It was for a Government produced document entitled "Handbook on Fighting Corruption". Unlike all my other auctions, I added a bit of commentary/personal opinion. Within a few hours, I received notice from Ebay that my auction had been cancelled. I was, and still am, flabberghasted! The reason stated in the email was "Inappropriate Item". I have looked on their list of auction restrictions, and I can't find that "category." In addition, my email requesting clarification has been ignored. And so, I am presenting the information to Freeperdom, and asking for...

IRS Instructions Make It Clear That That Income From Sources Like EBay Sales Can Be Taxed WASHINGTON (AP) -- Hawking baby and children's clothes -- along with some garage sale and thrift store bargains -- on eBay helps Sunni Wojnarowsky bring in some extra money so she can afford to stay home with her two young boys. The additional dollars are great, but does she really need to hassle with the paperwork and report her small profit to the Internal Revenue Service? ***A Message from Bill Cobb*** Since becoming the President of eBay North America in December, I've spent a lot of time listening to you, our Community. There's a lot on your minds right now. I've been taking it all in and thinking hard about how we can make sure eBay remains a fun, safe place to trade, and a prosperous home for our many dedicated sellers. One of the issues I've heard a lot about is our recent fee increases, particularly the increase in Store Inventory Format final value fees. I've also heard concerns about customer support, the amount of...

CHICAGO, Feb. 9 (UPI) -- The online auctioneer eBay Inc. may be the best-known brand online but other, less-recognizable sites now are competitively bidding for the business of smaller merchants who want to sell their goods in cyberspace -- from used PCs to old bowling balls. The storm over the price that eBay charges its customers to access its online auction technology is being used by rivals, such as MyPoAss.com and others, to build their own online businesses, experts told UPI's The Web. "We just felt like folks needed an alternative to eBay," said Todd Gurganus, president and chief executive...

I am looking to switch auctions sites away from Ebay since they have made huge monatiary demands upon small sellers like myself. I have only heard of bidville.com and yahoo.com auctions. I was not impressed with yahoo. I am in need of good freeper advice please. I know that the buyers will not follow as quick as the sellers, but I figure that eventually the buyers will go where the action is. So I don't mind slower sells for a while.

In the letter, dated Feb. 9, 1865, John Wilkes Booth asks a friend to send him one of his favorite pictures of himself, the one that later was used in his wanted poster. The previous high for a Booth letter was $38,000, according to Stuart Whitehurst, vice president of Skinner Inc. auctioneers. There are just 17 Booth letters not owned by institutions, Whitehurst said. This letter was addressed to family friend Orlando Tompkins of Boston. He tells Tompkins he...
