Milt Pappas, a cagey right-hander who won more than 200 big league games but whose most memorable, if unlucky, legacy is that he was traded for the future Hall of Fame outfielder Frank Robinson in what has been considered one of the most lopsided exchanges in baseball history, died on Tuesday at his home in Beecher, Ill. He was 76.

Okay people. You all know that this year is the 100th anniversary of the Cubs' first season in Wrigley Field. You also know that as of last year the national version of WGN no longer carries Cubs games. The Chicago station does, but the "superstation" apparently makes more money showing episode after episode after episode of a show called "Bluebloods" (which I know absolutely nothing about) than it does showing the Cubbies. So I looked up the radio station that currently carries the games and found it online. Well guess what? At game time I get the very beginning but...
  • Who Was Ty Cobb? The History We Know That’s Wrong

Ty Cobb was one of the greatest baseball players of all time and king of the so-called Deadball Era. He played in the major leagues—mostly for the Detroit Tigers but a bit for the Philadelphia Athletics—from 1905 to 1928, and was the first player ever voted into the Hall of Fame. His lifetime batting average of .366 is amazing, and has never been equaled. But for all that, most Americans think of him first as an awful person—a racist and a low-down cheat who thought nothing of injuring his fellow players just to gain another base or score a run....

y instinct, honed reflex and general contrarianism, I root for all “flashy” “showboats” who are “disgraces to the game.” It has been this way since I left Boston at age 10 to move to North Carolina, a state with no notable baseball team save the minor-league Durham Bulls, who, at least when I was growing up, seemed more a Hollywood relic than a ball club. Freed from having to like the Red Sox, I began to root for Rickey Henderson of the Oakland Athletics, mostly because I liked how deeply he squatted while taking a lead off first base. He...

ESPN host Bomani Jones wore a "Caucasians" t-shirt mocking the Cleveland Indians' "Chief Wahoo" logo during the "Mike & Mike" show on Thursday. The shirt includes the word "Caucasians" in the Indians' font, with a character based on "Chief Wahoo" that has white skin (instead of red), a basic nose (instead of a large, hooked nose), blonde hair (instead of dark hair parted, and held down by a head band), and a dollar sign (instead of a feather). Here are the two logos side-by-side:

We're used to wacky ballpark foods and baseball promotions but this one is in a league of its own: a hot dog topped with mac 'n cheese, bacon and Froot Loops. The Cleveland Indians announced in January that they would be introducing some new hot dog varieties at Progressive Field, and maybe you thought it was a joke. It is not. Locals may have known that because there's a restaurant named "Happy Dog" in Cleveland that sells all sorts of creations. A representative at Happy Dog told FOX Sports that they regularly offer numerous hot dog toppings -- including Froot...

Philadelphia is officially apologizing to Jackie Robinson for the shameful way he was treated in the City of Brotherly Love. A fan attending Saturday night's Tampa Bay-Pittsburgh game in Bradenton, Florida, was arrested after charging the field and throwing two bottles into the Rays dugout in an apparent protest of the team's trip to Cuba earlier this week. Bradenton police arrested a man of Cuban descent in the top of the seventh inning at McKechnie Field and charged him with trespassing, assault and starting affray, Lt. John Affolter said.

A pleasant and caring man, one who reveled in his mostly modest playing career in the big leagues, his receded -- not receding -- hairline and, it seemed, all facets and phases of his decades on the planet, has left us behind, behind and smiling. Joe Garagiola, a most entertaining, engaging and convivial sort, has died, bringing to an end a full, rich life and leaving the game without one its most enduring personalities, an energetic crusader and folksy humorist.

“Do not applaud when Barack Obama enters and do not wear caps or hats,” are some of the verbal warnings that accompany the entry tickets that are being distributed for the baseball game between the Cuban team and the Tampa Bay Rays on 22 March at the Latin American Stadium in Havana. The National Institute of Sports, Physical Education and Recreation (INDER) has announced that the game will be by invitation only. The tickets are being handed out to members of the Communist Party, the Young Communists Union and trusted officials, according to information from several sources. Military training schools...
  • Chicago Cubs skipper, players disagree with city's ban of chewing tobacco at ballparks

There was a time that chewing tobacco was as much a part of baseball as Louisville Slugger, Rawlings and Gatorade. Not anymore. This summer, Chicago will become the fourth American city to ban smokeless chewing tobacco at sports venues -- including Major League Baseball ballparks Wrigley Field and U.S. Cellular Field. That means not only can't fans use the substance, but players and managers can't, either. And it's a law that has some members of the Chicago Cubs less than thrilled. <> Chicago follows Los Angeles, San Francisco and Boston in implementing the ban at sporting venues. The entire state...

Told to reduce his son’s time in the clubhouse, Chicago White Sox first baseman Adam LaRoche took a different path: He said he planned to retire and walk away from a $13 million salary. The president of the White Sox, Kenny Williams, confirmed Wednesday that he had twice asked LaRoche in the last week to “dial it back” with his 14-year-old son, Drake.

The former president took on the NRA at a campaign rally for his wife. He said each year gun ownership has gone down slightly in America, but PolitiFact says that's only half true. They looked at poll data, and gun ownership has fluctuated, up and down. Pew Research says there's no definitive data on the subject,

This foreign influx into our National Pastime may help explain why our youth is abandoning baseball. Youth who play baseball have declined by more than 40% since 2000, and some communities where baseball was once booming now struggle to fill teams. Television ratings for World Series games are less than half what they were three decades ago. Baseball owners are doing the same thing that big corporations do – bring in foreign labor to take jobs that should go to Americans. American baseball players are better, as the awards and Hall of Fame prove, but perhaps baseball owners think that...

A father stops a flying baseball bat that was inches away from hitting his son’s face. A photographer captures the moment. You can guess what happens next. “It’s been crazy,” said Shaun Cunningham, 37, the father from Ocala, Fla., who has been declared a hero in several headlines. “The last 24 hours have been out of control.” The near-hit happened on Saturday while Cunningham and his 8-year-old son, Landon, were cheering on the Atlanta Braves in a spring training game in Orlando against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Christopher Horner, a photographer for The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, took the photo that has ricocheted...
