SAN DIEGO (Army News Service, May 29, 2009) -- Aboard the USS Midway Friday the U.S. Postal Service released the 44-cent Bob Hope commemorative stamp on what would have been the world-renowned entertainer and philanthropist's 106th birthday. Although Hope never officially served in the military, he dedicated a significant part of his life to entertaining the country's men and women in uniform starting in 1941 and continuing through Operation Desert Storm 50 years later. After giving hundreds of performances overseas he earned the nickname "G.I. Bob" and in 1997 he became the first person ever recognized by Congress as an...

"I thought it was going to be just another birthday," Dolores Hope mused as she attended a Hollywood gathering celebrating her 100 years. When her late husband, entertainer Bob Hope, reached his 100th birthday, he was too frail to enjoy it. Although Dolores Hope was brought to Wednesday night's party in a wheelchair, she was alert and happy as she greeted old friends and posed for photographs. At 100, Dolores Hope is little changed. Her white hair is richly coifed, her skin is smooth and her voice is deep and warm. Her 10 decades were represented by 10 kiosks set...

Morton Lachman, one of the creative minds behind Bob Hope who was a writer and producer for the famous comedian for more than two decades before shifting into sitcom production in shows including "All in the Family," "Gimme a Break" and "Kate & Allie," died Tuesday at UCLA Medical Center. He was 90 and would have celebrated his birthday Friday. The cause was a heart attack and diabetes, according to his family. For 28 years, until 1975, Mr. Lachman was a key member of Hope's gag-writing machine, along with such writers as Mel Shavelson, Gene Perret, Hal Kanter, Sherwood Schwartz...

[I wasn't going to post this story here, as it's obviously just made up for fun. But I just heard my wife cracking up as she watched the embedded old Bob Hope video and what he says about democrats, that I thought what the hell. You might enjoy the video]Does anyone know who the chairman of the Democratic National Committee is? We wracked our brains and can’t remember. Apparently, the person is so forgettable that his or her identity has just plain slipped the minds of a lot of people. So we admit we don’t know if the job is...

A holiday change of pace from your humble correspondent here. Instead of taking a non-political article and looking for a political theme, I am taking this Slate article about political media divas who refuse to appear with other guests and transferring it to a non-political pet peeve of mine...people in the entertainment industry who have such bloated egos that they never appear on a show with other guests. Nowadays this means almost everybody in the entertainment business. However, check out this video from almost 40 years ago. It features Bob Hope, Dean Martin, and George Gobel together on the Johnny...

One local logger, Tom Olden, is preparing to get out of the logging business because...of a combination of too little profit, too many U.S. Forest Service regulations, too few sales and a lack of mills to process what is cut. "The industry is in bad shape," ... There is only one mill within an economical driving distance capable of handling the smaller diameter logs typically found in salvage sales... When he started logging, nine years ago, Olden said the 2.3 million-acre White River National Forest sold an average of 22 million board-feet of timber a year. That has since dwindled...

WRITTEN BY LT.COLONEL CHARLES WADE Wednesday, October 13, 2004 Even before the primary elections, President Bush’s military service was a political issue as was Senator Kerry’s military service which he touted and others questioned. Reporters continue to seek comment from candidates, political operatives, and pundits. It seems that everyone is an expert, and everyone has an answer. Some of the more interesting responses have come from Republican senators who typically begin by asserting that they honor Senator Kerry’s Viet Nam service, but… Honor: What is that all about? What virtues are honorable? More important, what virtues are both militarily and...

Bob Hope immigrated to the U.S. when he was 4 years old, and like millions of other would-be Americans, Ellis Island was the first U.S. soil he stepped on. Now, Reps. Elton Gallegly, R-Calif., and Elliot Engel, D-N.Y., have written other members of Congress asking them to rename the Ellis Island Immigration Museum as the Bob Hope Memorial Library, reports the Associated Press. "Bob Hope held a special place in his heart for Ellis Island," read the letter, and the renaming would honor Hope's "great contributions to the American people, the American culture and the American dream." While Hope was...

Audie Murphy, John Wayne and My Dad By Christopher Pritchard My father flew 57 combat missions in a B-26 during World War II. Audie Murphy was the most decorated soldier in that war and won the Medal of Honor, John Wayne and Bob Hope never served a day in the military. Yet they all served their country. Today liberals are trying to destroy the memory of John Wayne by calling him a draft dodger. The same way they impugn anyone who supports America’s War on Terrorism that did not serve in the military. Service to country does not only come...

In England, I was the youngest of five boys. After they had me, Mum and Daddy never spoke to each other again. I was Mom’s favorite, though. She was always playing with me and tossing me in the air… What fun it would have been if one day she would’ve caught me. There were so many in my family, I was eight years old before it was my turn in the bathroom. In all there were seven brothers. That’s how I learned to dance . . . waiting for my turn in the bathroom. We had the only bathroom in...

Looking Back at Reagan October 2, 2003 Reading Ronald Reagan’s newly published letters reminds me how much I’ve always liked him, even after I stopped admiring him as a president. He was always a modest, decent, good-humored man, with more common sense and a keener sense of proportion than most politicians. And he loved a good laugh. But the very qualities that made him charming and convivial underscored the absurdity of entrusting him, or any man, with the awful power of the American presidency. The superlatives his adulators heap on him seem as wide of the mark as the exaggerations...

Some serious thoughts about a funny subject. Where there's life there's hope but sadly now, where there's Hope there is no longer life. Bob Hope's hundred-year life lasted until shortly after the old century, awash with wars, semi-wars, tyranny, conflicts, suffering and starvation, came to an end. He brought the sunshine of humor to shine upon the blasted landscape of a planet engaged, for much of the century, in brutal self-destruction. He was so funny for so long that we all became like Pavlov's dogs -- so conditioned by a lifetime of his humor that once he began his...

Tony Carranza said. There were no details about the Mass, which was a closely guarded family secret. Death of Bob Hope By the President of the United States of America A Proclamation Today, America mourns the loss of one of its great treasures. A gifted comedian who entertained audiences for decades with his unique talents, Bob Hope brought joy and laughter to our Nation. By tirelessly entertaining America's troops, he demonstrated his extraordinary love of country and devotion to the men and women who have served in our military. As a mark of respect for the memory of Bob Hope, I hereby order, by the authority vested in me as President of the United States by the...

If you only remember one thing about him, it’s this: Bob Hope has made more people laugh than anyone in human history. He’s the only comedian to have been, over the years, the Number One star in radio, in film, and then television, at a time when each of those media was at its highpoint. The Road pictures with Bing Crosby were the highest-grossing series in movie history till James Bond came along, his six decades with NBC hold the record for the longest contract in showbusiness, and his TV specials for the network remain among the most-watched programmes of...

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Funnyman Bob Hope died this week aged 100, and the New York Times informed its readers of the sad event by running out an obituary written by Vincent Canby -- a veteran Times critic who died himself in 2000. Canby, who died aged 76 in October 2000, was a long time entertainment writer for the Times. "The obituary was written by Mr. Canby several years ago and his byline was on it," Times spokesman Toby Usnik said on Tuesday, adding that Canby's own demise was noted when the Times posted the obituary on its Web site....

Bob Hope has taken his final bow. Hollywood's greatest quipster was quietly buried Wednesday after a private sunrise funeral mass attended by 100 family members and close friends, according to Los Angeles media reports. Hope, who died on Sunday of pneumonia at the age of 100, was interred at the San Fernando Mission Cemetery following the 6:30 a.m. memorial service at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, just 12 miles from Hope's Toluca Lake residence. Police confirmed they escorted a 25-car procession, including three black limousines carrying Hope's family, to the cemetery at approximately 8:30 a.m., where Hope's body was laid...

Some prominent media obituaries and tributes to Bob Hope, who passed away on Sunday at age 100, characterized Hope as more than just conservative, as "deeply conservative" or a "right- winger," and/or treated his personal conservative political views as unfavorable or even damaging to his career. The New York Times obituary by the late Vincent Canby referred to how "only during the Vietnam War did he let his guard down a bit and permit his audiences to see his deep conservatism." In the Washington Post, Tom Shales maintained: "Some of the public affection for Hope soured during the Vietnam era,...

I was going to write about the media’s manipulation of the facts with regard to the progress of the coalition’s mission in Iraq but then something really important came to pass. Something happened that created a moment for which we should stop, lament and pay some respect for certainly the respect is warranted. Hopefully, we can learn something from it, too. The other column can wait. Legendary comedian Bob Hope passed away late Sunday night at his home in Toluca Lake, California just outside Hollywood, a town that was built as much by him as anyone. He passed away just...

My wife heard this story on the TV: Shortly before he died, Bob Hope's wife, Dolores, asked the 100 year old comedian if he had any preferences as to where he would like to be buried. Bob looked her - deadpan - and answered : " Why don't you just surprise me ? "

Bob Hope's death yesterday at 100 has been the occasion for an outpouring of heartfelt tributes to one of America's greatest comedians. Among his many achievements, Hope is perhaps best known as the premier entertainer of America's troops. What is not well known is that he also took a courageous, if not controversial, stand during Hitler's war against the Jews. At the peak of the Holocaust, in early 1944, Hope volunteered to perform in an all-star show at Madison Square Garden to benefit the Emergency Committee to Save the Jewish People of Europe. This was not merely another benefit concert...

LOS ANGELES (CNS) -- Entertainer Bob Hope died a Catholic, according to Cardinal Roger M. Mahony of Los Angeles. "One of my greatest joys is knowing that Bob Hope died as a Catholic," Cardinal Mahony said in a July 28 statement. "Over the years I would invite him to join the church, but he would respond in his typical humor, 'My wife, Dolores, does enough praying to take care of both of us.' But eventually her prayers prevailed and he was baptized into the Catholic Church and was strengthened these past years through the regular reception of holy Communion." Hope...

Radio and TV outlets began playing Bob Hope's theme song early yesterday, as soon as news of his death became known. "Thanks for the Memories" is undoubtedly the headline of choice today for tributes to Hope, who was born in England and who died the most honored American entertainer in modern history. Still, it's worth remembering that Bob Hope's legacy is about a lot more than memories -- at least the kind suggested in those innocently romantic lyrics about lazy afternoons and the way we danced together.

President Bush has ordered U.S. flags lowered in honor of Bob Hope, the legendary entertainer who died Sunday in California of pneumonia. Hope was 100 and had celebrated his birthday just two months earlier. Mr. Bush said in a proclamation Monday that as a mark of respect for Hope's memory, flags will be lowered at the White House, public buildings, and U.S. posts and military installations worldwide on the day of his burial. Flags are also to be flown at half-mast on U.S. ships that day. The burial will be private and held in the coming days. President Bush praised...

Bob Hope London, July 26, 1943 When the time for recognition of service to the nation in wartime comes to be considered , Bob Hope should be high on the list. This man drives himself and is driven. It is impossible to see how he can do so much, can cover so much ground, can work so hard, and can be so effective. He works month after month at a pace that would kill most people. Moving about the country in camps, airfields, billets, supply depots, and hospitals, you hear one thing consistently. Bob Hope is coming, or Bob Hope...
