Nice try, diehards. As you might expect, Kathy Griffin’s lovely little video on TMZ has been met with the sort of universal condemnation you’d expect, with even the most strident anti-Trump Democrats expressing in no uncertain terms that it’s way, way, way, way over the line. Which they should. Because it is. Kathy Griffin has never been funny to begin with, but I guess being paired with Anderson Cooper on New Years Eve gives her a modicum of credibility for reasons entirely unknown to me. For the most part, Griffin’s entire schtick has always been to simply be so annoying...

Thus making it easier for cops to protect themselves against threats For awhile there, cop-hating liberals and libertarians had themselves a loophole that made it easier to come down on cops who used force in self-defense. According to the so-called “provocation doctrine,” if police had made their way into a situation without satisfying every legal technicality (such as entering a home without a warrant), then they were not necessarily allowed to use deadly force to defend themselves even if another party threatened them with deadly force. In the case in question, police had indeed entered a home without a warrant...

New round of chaos, or no big deal? For a little over a week, we’ve been hearing of an impending shake-up in the Trump White House. Allegedly, the President is furious about leaks, incompetence, the general perception (or reality) that his agenda seems to have stalled if not completely derailed. Are things that dire? Probably not. However, we’d be lying if we tried to pretend that President Trump has been enjoying a smooth month. To put it mildly, things have been a bit “clunky.” So, yes, it’s likely that his administration is headed for some personnel changes.

A wind gust sent an inflatable bounce house and slide sailing into the air over the weekend during a church carnival, injuring five children. Springwell Church invites the community to attend its free spring carnival each year, but this year the carnival ended in tears, with church members asking for prayer. Organizers say the inflatables were anchored with stakes and tethers, yet a strong wind gust was still able to rip them from the ground and shoot the bounce house up to 30 feet into the air, where it hit some power lines before tumbling to the ground. Witnesses reported...

"President Obama is overseas on a nine-day Blame America First tour. He’s ostensibly spending time on the other side of the Pacific to explore ways the United States can work better with Asian economies. Instead, he’s using his time in the spotlight to criticize the nation he’s supposed to be leading."

The US government is offering private intelligence companies contracts to create software to manage "fake people" on social media sites and create the illusion of consensus on controversial issues. The contract calls for the development of "Persona Management Software" which would help the user create and manage a variety of distinct fake profiles online. The job listing was discussed in recently leaked emails from the private security firm HBGary after an attack by internet activist last week. Click here to view the government contract (PDF) According to the contract, the software would "protect the identity of government agencies" by employing...

My Firewall/Antivirus detected an infection of the "Packed.Win32.Krap.hm!A2" and http://www.threatexpert.com/report.aspx?md5=45e98426fafd221ffb7d55ce8a1ae531 says it's: A malicious trojan horse or bot that may represent security risk for the compromised system and/or its network environment. I tried to block it and delete the infected files, but that just set off an attack against my computer, which caused me to reload from backup several times. How do I get rid of this nightmare, and prevent it from coming back?

Internet security is broken, and no one knows how to fix it By John Markoff Sunday, December 7, 2008 SAN FRANCISCO: Internet security is broken, and nobody seems to know quite how to fix it. Despite the efforts of the computer security industry and a half-decade struggle by Microsoft to improve the security of its Windows operating system software, malicious software is spreading faster than ever. The so-called malware surreptitiously takes over a PC and then uses that computer to spread the software to other machines exponentially. Computer scientists and security researchers acknowledge that they cannot get ahead of the...

A BusinessWeek probe of rising attacks on America's most sensitive computer networks uncovers startling security gaps The e-mail message addressed to a Booz Allen Hamilton executive was mundane—a shopping list sent over by the Pentagon of weaponry India wanted to buy. But the missive turned out to be a brilliant fake. Lurking beneath the description of aircraft, engines, and radar equipment was an insidious piece of computer code known as "Poison Ivy" designed to suck sensitive data out of the $4 billion consulting firm's computer network. The Pentagon hadn't sent the e-mail at all. Its origin is unknown, but the...

According to a press release issued earlier this month by Finjan, a security research firm, compromised Web servers are infecting thousands of visitors daily with malware that turns their Windows machines into unwitting bots to do the bidding of an as yet unidentified criminal organization. Security firms ScanSafe and SecureWorks have since added their own takes on the situation, though with varying estimates on the number of sites affected. All reports thus far say the compromised servers are running Linux and Apache. According to an article on ServerTune.com, the exploit involves a rootkit installed on the compromised server that replaces...

LOS ANGELES, CA, USA -- A US computer hacker on Monday pleaded guilty to hijacking around 400,000 computers, including military servers, and infecting them with malicious software. In the first such prosecution of its kind, "botmaster" Jeanson Ancheta, 20, admitted infecting the computers with software that caused them to send spam, show ads and launch crippling attacks on Internet sites. In federal court in Los Angeles, Ancheta admitted conspiring to violate both the Computer Fraud Abuse Act and an anti-spam law, to causing damage to US defense computers and to hacking into computers to commit fraud. His plea comes after...

If money is the root of all evil, then hackers are evil incarnate. According to a security intelligence firm, more than half the cyber-attacks conducted in 2004 were carried out by criminals interested in only one thing: money. iDefense, a Reston, Va.-based supplier of security intelligence to both corporations and government agencies, delved into its private database of more than 100,000 malicious code attacks to publish analytical findings publicly for the first time, said Ken Dunham, the company's director of research. Using that database, iDefense tallied a record 27,260 attacks in 2004. Over 15,000 of those, or some 55 percent,...
