So I was standardized on Opera for several years, tried Brave, didn't really like it, and then someone on here recommended Vivaldi. I tried it and really like it, it's my main browser now. Problem is, it seems to lose the file-type association for web links and http files and so on. I clicked on a link in an email and it opened the box inviting me to tell it what program to use, and -- Vivaldi wasn't even one of the pre-registered options, only Opera. So I browsed to the location (which is oddly in %APPDATA%), and explicitly told...

I never had a browser give me a message that the browser is busy and I can either click Wait or Exit. It is extremely annoying to have to wait. I have no idea why Brave can't seem to handle going to visit a webpage or other simple task, but it chokes. What's better?

The Free Software Foundation has unveiled the project JShelter , which develops a browser add-on to protect against threats posed by JavaScript on websites, including hidden identification , movement tracking, and user data collection. The project code is distributed under the GPLv3 license. The add-on is prepared for Firefox , Google Chrome , Opera , Brave, Microsoft Edge and other browsers based on the Chromium engine. The project is being developed as a joint initiative funded by the foundation NLnet Foundation. JShelter has also been joined by Giorgio Maone, the creator of the add-on NoScript , as well as the...

There has long been a movement to ditch Google Chrome, but many people end up going back to the browser, simply because it functions well and many apps are optimised for it. But recent moves by Google—such as the delayed but widely believed to be privacy-infringing FLoC update—are pushing people to say it: Enough is enough, it’s time to quit Chrome. *** Firefox is the number one alternative if you want to ditch Chrome, and that’s because of its privacy ethos. Firefox is owned by Mozilla, a non-profit, so it doesn’t need to perform tracking to serve you ads. ***...

Since the latest Firefox update allah the colors on FR and AT&T Yahoo mail are all wonky, The background colors have gone to never-neverland, link font colors have gone to a very pale blue, my posts are no longer green with envy, etc. Everybody's screen names are Grape Ape purple. Worst of all, the fundraiser thermometer bar has gone from a rich ruby red worthy of Dorothy's slippers to invisible!!!

When some readers installed the new Microsoft Edge browser — which replaces the old “legacy Edge” — they got a big surprise. They discovered that Edge had somehow magically absorbed all the usernames and passwords they’d carefully saved in their previously installed browsers, such as Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer, and legacy Edge. What’s even more surprising is that Edge — which until recently couldn’t import or export passwords at all — may be doing this new behavior by design. The bad news is that you shouldn’t store passwords in Edge in the first place — or in any browser, really. This may...

I want to get away from the invasive tech giants.

I used to see FR in Arial font. Using this laptop it's in Times New Roman. Very difficult to read and small font size does not help. Searched settings/preferences but no joy. Any guidance to offer? Thanks. Win10.

It's amazing how different the best web browsers actually are. While you may think that every internet browser is the same, there are actually plenty of differences between them - from cosmetic changes to speeds to the way each browser handles your personal data. As such, we've tested a whole bunch of them to see what the best web browser could be for you. With privacy and data management becoming an increasingly important issue, it's vital to know how your web browser is handling and showing your browsing data and history. So we've reassessed our list, taking things like data...

Been using Firefox since v0.8. I was using Opera as a backup browser, but since the *forced* upgrade to Windows 10 20H2, I've noted a background process for Opera that I cannot disable. At least permanently. I find it annoying the number of "assistant" startup processes being forced by applications in Windows 10. Oh sure, you can try and disable them, but they just come back.

The extension is called Big Tech Detective, and after using the internet with it for a day (or, more accurately, trying and failing to use), I’d say it drives home the point that it’s almost impossible to avoid these companies on the modern web, even if you try.

right after the 2nd acquittal of the President, my pi-hole started blocking freerepublic as well as some links on other right wing sites (such as ben shapiro's site.) I whitelisted it but just a heads up to those with pi-holes! If you want a list of my adlists, pm me.

Google controls what the vast majority of the world finds on the internet. Being put at the top of the Google results for search is not only immensely lucrative, it is also almost mind-bogglingly powerful in global affairs. Since 2016, according to multiple reports, Google’s algorithm has been increasingly manipulated to bury and elevate specific information, especially politically charged information. This appears to have strong effects on what people believe and therefore how they vote and respond to polls that inform what politicians do with their power. A 2018 Wall Street Journal investigation concluded, “The internet giant uses blacklists, algorithm...

I used to use Bing as a search engine but haven't in years. I've been using DuckDuckGo, but recently saw something that makes me thing they may have been compromised. Anybody know whether Bing/Microsoft is part of the Deep Tech crap? I also downloaded Brave.com, which seems okay. Any other non-Google search engine suggestions?

Bah... Here’s a no good rotten Vanity! LOL! I downloaded the DuckDuckGo web browser on my IPhone today and have been messing around with it. The app is in the AppStore and downloads and installs like any other app. Nothing uncommon to note. Setup was simple with 2 or 3 settings to enable or not. The descriptions were clear enough on what the settings are for and there’s a click button on the bottom of the Duck’s webpage so that you can change them later if needed. First impressions... So far, so good. It does have a bit different personality...

Ok, I'm getting fed up with the internet and Windows. Windows not-so-much, but under WinXP, the versions of Firefox and Chrome I can run are pretty ancient and I either get hit by tons of ads or it gives me a time error and won't even let me in. So I have an older CD which is Knoppix 5.1 and I am trying to configure it to talk to my modem. If you have had experience with this and have hints/tips, please let me know! TIA!
