Browser Wars Thu Dec 16, 3:00 AM ET Michael Desmond Are you sick and tired of Internet Explorer? Have you grown weary of the constant vulnerabilities and patches? Do you scratch your head at sudden program lockups and crashes? Are you dismayed that Microsoft hasn't lifted a finger to improve or enhance IE since it buried Netscape's Navigator browser at the dawn of the century? Yeah, me too. Welcome to Internet Explorer backlash. For the first time since Microsoft launched its flagship browser in 1995, Internet Explorer is actually losing market share. Research firm WebSideStory reported that the enormous chunk...

I am a frequent Drudgereport.com visitor - in fact, it's my homepage. Unfortunately, Matt Drudge is using a new type of popup ad which will open the window even if you use anti-popup software. I am also an afficianado, as I'm sure many other FReepers are, of anti-popup software. I don't mind seeing ads when I browse, but popups are very intrusive and often end up crashing my web browser, or hanging it for a minute or three at a time. BTW, the anti-popup software I use is built into the free & excellent Google Toolbar, available from http://toolbar.google.com/ I...

Citing security risks, a state university is urging students to drop Internet Explorer in favor of alternative Web browsers such as Firefox and Safari. In a notice sent to students on Wednesday, Pennsylvania State University's Information Technology Services department recommended that students download other browsers to reduce attacks through vulnerabilities in the Microsoft software. The university said "media reports" and a string of warnings by Carnegie Mellon University's Computer Emergency and Response Team led to its recommendation. "We're not telling people to wipe off IE, because you need IE to do operating-system updates," Robin Anderson, a spokeswoman for Penn State's...

Internet Explorer users are at least four times as likely to click on Web ads than Firefox users, a German advertising technology company said last week. The company, Adtech, found that during October and November, only 0.11 percent of Firefox users ever clicked on an ad, compared with around 0.5 percent of IE users. The percentage of IE users clicking on ads varied depending on which version of the browser was being used, the company said: from 0.44 percent of version 6.x users to 0.53 percent of version 5.5 users. The survey was based on 1,000 Web sites in Europe...

AOL has unveiled a prototype of its revived Netscape Browser, which serves as a test bed for several new features. The new Netscape is based on Firefox, but with a twist - it includes support for switching to Microsoft's IE engine. BetaNews has also learned that Netscape's development was not done in-house by AOL, but rather outsourced to Canadian software firm Mercurial Communications. The Netscape prototype is built upon Mozilla Firefox 0.9.3, which means it utilizes the same user interface toolkit and Gecko browser engine. The browser's theme has been redone to match Netscape's traditional green style and, as expected,...

<p>With the release of Netscape 7.0, Netscape Communications Corp. and its parent AOL have finally completed the transformation of the browser from a powerful and highly customizable Web and e-mail client to an intrusive home-user-focused client more on par with Microsoft Corp,'s MSN Explorer and the AOL client itself.</p>

Bug opens up Javascript browsers to hackers Microsoft unmoved By Paul Hales: Tuesday 30 July 2002, 11:03 A RECENTLY-DISCOVERED vulnerability opens up Javascript-enabled browsers to make network PCs available to an external attacker. But Microsoft has chosen to ignore it. The hole was discovered by Adam Megacz and the details posted here yesterday. "The exploit," says the posting, "allows an attacker to use any JavaScript-enabled web browser behind a firewall to retrive content from (HTTP GET) and interact with (HTTP POST) any HTTP server behind the firewall. If the client in use is Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0+, Mozilla, or Netscape...

By Andrew Orlowski in London Posted: 07/18/2002 at 11:35 EST A video conferencing company based in Austin, Texas says it's going to pursue royalties on the transmission of JPEG images. And it's already found a licensee: Sony Corporation. Formerly known as VTEL, Forgent Networks acquired Compression Labs in 1997, acquiring this patent into the bargain. The patent claim was filed in 1986 but Compression Labs never pursued royalties. Forgent last week declared that it has "the sole and exclusive right to use and license all the claims" under the patent and is seeking a deal wherever JPEGs are transmitted, with...

I have problem that is about to make me snap. There is a demon somewhere and I pray we can find it. It isn't all that easy to explain, but I shall try. When browsing web pages and clicking links within web pages… I can be going along just fine for much of the day, and then suddenly my browser will begin to "act up" and rather than opening the desired page… it begins sending me to some other place in never never land instead. It isn't directing me to good sites from advertisers, like I have a sneaky adware...
