BRUNSWICK, Maine - Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain was many things in his lifetime: Medal of Honor winner for his bravery during the battle of Gettysburg, governor of Maine, and Bowdoin College president. With interest in the Civil War growing in recent years, Chamberlain has gained almost mythic stature, with his image appearing in movies, TV documentaries, on bottles of ale, and even in a stage musical. But somehow, Chamberlain - who died in 1914 and is buried here - had failed to fully capture the hearts of the people of this picturesque college town where he spent most of his adult...

Chamberlain Statue Nearing Completion in Brunswick, Maine Sept. 9, 2002--He was a college professor turned military leader, turned governor, turned college president. He wrote some of the most memorable lines to come out of the Civil War from a participant and, according to at least one recent movie, single-handedly saved the Union army at Gettysburg. Yet there has never before been a statue of Gen. Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain in Brunswick, Maine, home of Bowdoin College with which he was so intimately connected as student, professor and president. This situation is about to be rectified. The statue, by Swanville artist Joseph...

Can any good brothers from Maine or Alabama confirm to me the source of this quote, said to be found in a book written by Joshua Chamberlain. An Amazon review says this is found on page 21 in the book, but a search of other internet links does not mention this letter as much as one would imagine. Here is the Amazon quote/review: A letter written to Chamberlain...by a Confederate combatant of the 15th Alabama Regiment which assaulted Little Round Top on July 2...is astonishing(p.21).The former rebel soldier simply states that he COULD HAVE SHOT CHAMBERLAIN TWICE during the battle...

BRUNSWICK, Maine — Bowdoin College will no longer bestow the Jefferson Davis Award, after the college’s board of trustees voted to approve President Clayton Rose’s proposal to end the practice. The annual cash award to a student of government and legal studies who excels in constitutional law was named for the Confederate president. It was established in 1972 with an endowed gift from the United Daughters of the Confederacy, according to a news release from the college. In 1858, Davis received an honorary degree from Bowdoin College.

BRUNSWICK, Ga. (AP) - A Georgia teen convicted of fatally shooting a baby in a stroller was sentenced Thursday to spend the rest of his life in prison with no chance of parole after the grieving mother asked a judge to punish the gunman for taking "the love of my life." De'Marquise Elkins, 18, stood silent and showed no emotion as he was sentenced in a courtroom less than two weeks after a jury found him guilty of murder in the slaying of 13-month-old Antonio Santiago during a robbery attempt.

An 18-year-old Georgia man will spend the rest of his life behind bars for fatally shooting a baby riding in a stroller during a robbery attempt at a seaside town, a judge ruled Thursday. De’Marquise Elkins, 18, was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, The Associated Press reported. Elkins was 17 at the time of the killing and thus too young to face the death penalty under Georgia law. A jury last month found Elkins guilty of two counts of felony murder and a count of murder in the March 21 shooting of 13-month-old Antonio Santiago...

MARIETTA, Ga. (AP) — A man accused of fatally shooting a baby in coastal Georgia hid a gun at a relative's apartment the day after the slaying, and his mother and sister came to get it, a woman who lives in the home said Monday. Danielle Williams testified that De'Marquise Elkins came to her home March 22, the day after 13-month-old Antonio Santiago was shot to death in his stroller, and asked if he could hide a gun under a loveseat. Later that day, Elkins' mother and sister came by the apartment and left with the gun, Williams said. Williams'...

The teen accused of shooting a toddler between the eyes during a robbery attempt counted down from five before firing, his alleged accomplice testified today after pointing him out as the shooter. Dominique Lang testified that he ran into De'Marquise Elkins on the morning of the March 21 slaying. A short while later as the two walked together, they saw Sherry West with a stroller. Lang says Elkins walked to West and demanded her purse before pulling out a gun. When West refused to hand the purse over, he hit her in the face with it and threatened her baby....

But the baby-faced 8th grader insisted Elkins was the killer, testifying he witnessed him count down from 5, gun pointed at the stroller, before firing the deadly bullet.Elkins, 18, is charged with malice murder,...

MARIETTA, Ga. – An 18-year-old man accused of fatally shooting a baby in a stroller during a robbery attempt in coastal Georgia twice counted down from five and threatened the baby before the deadly shot, his teenage co-defendant testified Thursday. Dominique Lang took the stand at the murder trial of De'Marquise Elkins, who is accused of shooting 13-month-old Antonio Santiago on March 21. Police say the 15-year-old Lang was an accomplice, and he is also charged with murder and will be tried at a later date.

BRUNSWICK, Ga. (AP) — It was a tiny bullet that took the short life of Antonio Santiago. He had learned to walk, but not yet talk, when he was killed March 21, six weeks after his first birthday. He was strapped in his stroller, out for a walk with his mother a few blocks from their apartment near the Georgia coast, when someone shot the boy between the eyes with a .22-caliber bullet the size of a garden pea. The teenager charged as the shooter is scheduled to stand trial next week in a courthouse far from the scene of...

BRUNSWICK, Ga. - Less than three weeks away from the start of the first trial in the shooting death of a 13-month-old boy, lawyers on both sides are making their final preparations before the judge about what will happen when the case is in the hands of a jury. At times, the conversations between prosecutors and the team of defense lawyers at a hearing Thursday got heated, both parties arguing about evidence, witnesses and wording in the case against De'Marquise Elkins. Elkins is one of two teens accused of killing Antonio Santiago in March while the child's mother was walking...

The Marietta Daily Journal’s news sections, as well as the op-ed pages seldom miss having at least one entry concerning the Trayvon Martin/George Zimmerman tragedy as well as the subsequent trial and its verdict. Indeed, one can hardly read a newspaper or magazine, watch TV or surf the internet without reading, hearing or seeing something about it. The case has, with a lot of outside help, split the nation, so to speak. I had hoped that the people of Cobb County were above the racially divisive finger pointing, name calling and sheer idiocy overtaking a large part of the nation....

BRUNSWICK, Ga. -- The defense for the teen accused of killing a Brunswick baby wants evidence released that may connect another local woman to the crime. Action News uncovered startling new details in the death of 13-month-old Antonio Santiago. According to police, 17-year-old De'Marquis Elkins murdered the Brunswick baby nearly two weeks ago. Now his attorney, Kevin Gough, claims someone else may have plotted to have the baby killed and used Elkins as the trigger man. Action News isn't releasing the woman's name because she hasn't been charged with a crime. "I know she hasn't been involved in anything. I...
