I HAVE this visceral dislike of bumper-sticker moralisers. These are people who go out of their way to advertise what they take to be their own exalted moral sensibilities, but do so at no cost to themselves and without the messy business of having to weigh costs and benefits or to choose between stark alternatives where none is particularly pleasant or easy. It's all form and no substance for these people, and there's no shortage of them around. Take those who plaster "Save the Whales" stickers on the back of their cars but miss the irony that it's an upmarket...

I THOUGHT I'D share a little political adventure I had in Vermont recently. My in-laws were in town and we decided to take our daughter to Billings Farm. As we pulled into the parking lot I noticed three cars with anti-Bush bumper stickers. "Welcome to Vermont," I told my in-laws. I was waiting for a bus this afternoon right next to the biggest grocery store around here, deep in the liberal heart of South Whidbey Island WA. You might want to keep a an eye on what gets stuck on your vehicle. I came home the other night, and out of the corner of my eye I noticed a small red, white and blue sticker on the back of my wife's car, just under the "Bush/Cheney 04" sticker and near the big "W The President" sticker she has on there. This onerous sticker was placed on our car in Charlottesville, Virginia, a liberal outpost in the otherwise conservative enclave of Central Virginia. I'd be interested in what Bumper Stickers the Freepers adorn their cars with. I myself have none at all, I am concerned with vandalism or just general spitefulness of the looney left. My personal vehicle is also my work vehicle, so not alienating customers is another aspect. I have never yet had my mind changed by a bumper sticker... Also, I have notice that whatever the message; people I see with a LARGE number of bumper stickers are usually crazies... Comments?
