While I am sure this summer's drought will have a greater negative impact on the U. S. than hurricane Katrina, it will be reported as a positive for this President and his administration no matter how many mistakes or errors they may make.

In 1990, President George H. W. Bush was promised two dollars in spending cuts for every one dollar in tax hikes. He fell for the bait and violated his Pledge to not raise taxes. After a $137 billion tax hike, spending actually rose by $22 billion. As a reminder, he regretted breaking his Pledge to oppose higher taxes after he realized he got tricked into letting it happen.

-snip- Thoughts on the “no new tax” pledge from Grover Norquist. PARADE: During your presidency you gave in on your “no new taxes” pledge. You’ve been vindicated in many respects for that decision. I wonder how you view the “no new tax” pledge from Grover Norquist that seems to be requisite for GOP political candidates. GB: The rigidity of those pledges is something I don’t like. The circumstances change and you can’t be wedded to some formula by Grover Norquist. It’s—who the hell is Grover Norquist, anyway? BB: I think he ought to go back to Alaska. [laughs] Don’t quote...
  • Creating a National Education System through Federal Waivers

    National Review Online - The Corner ^ | July 13, 2012 | Sally Lovejoy
In just three short years, President Obama and Secretary Duncan have quietly been laying the ground work to put this country on the path toward a national education system. While many are celebrating the premature death of the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act, a greater threat looms on the horizon which has received little attention. Make no mistake about it; through waivers and federal grants, this administration is changing our K-12 educational system as dramatically as our health-care system but without the statutory authority granted by our elected officials.

Back in late 2009 Washington, DC was still showing its submissions from that year's DC Fotoweek, a photo festival which that year included an Obamacentric display at one locale. The shots seen here are all from Crystal City, and focused mainly on the inauguration. The predominant theme was all of the hopey changey optimism that was associated with the election of President Obama, and the celebration around his inauguration. Given our president's Flight of Icarus from the top of the world to his current course of crash and burn, some of these Fotoweek pictures help explain both. There is no...

Passengers say their problems is not with rules at the airport. They understand why drinks are not allowed through security, but when they buy one while they wait for their flight, they say the TSA shouldn't ask to test it. Passengers say traveling is a big enough stress, but now some are worried the drinks they are getting are not safe.

The Obama Record: As it becomes clear our "brilliant" president has failed to turn the economy around, a poll shows half of Americans want to know how he did in college. Forty-nine percent of respondents to an exclusive IBD/TIPP survey say they agree that Obama "should release his academic records" before November. Only 28% strongly disagree. Seven percent answered "not sure." Voters got a look at the college coursework and grades of President Bush, as well as Democratic challengers Al Gore and John Kerry. Obama, however, refuses to release his transcripts, despite media requests. It's natural voters would now wonder...

I've always thought that history is going to be kind to President George W. Bush. While that whole "compassionate conservatism" thing and its derivative policies drive me nuts (what does that imply ... that I'm otherwise not compassionate? False, ugh!), I think his humility and good-faith efforts will eventually earn him much more widespread respect than he received when he was in office.Despite President Obama's best attempts at a no-holds-barred blame-Bush approach --- from continued economic doldrums to Fast and Furious gunwalking tactics, there seems to be no problem that President Obama didn't "inherit" --- it appears that Americans are...

Malware Flame could have been a first strike weapon against Iran, according to insecurity outfit Symantec. Although people have known that Flame had spying potential, but Symantec claims it was a weapon of war which might have been used in April to hit Iranian businesses. Iran had admitted that Flame for caused data loss on computers in the country's main oil export terminal and Oil Ministry. Symantec researcher Vikram Thakur said on Thursday that the company has now identified a component of Flame that allows operators to delete files from computers, which means it can cause critical programs to fail...

LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) — Jury selection is set to begin Thursday in the trial of a Saudi man accused of gathering bomb components with the intention of targeting sites across the U.S. including former President George W. Bush's Dallas home. Khalid Ali-M Aldawsari, 22, a former Texas Tech University chemical engineering student, has pleaded not guilty to a charge of attempted use of a weapon of mass destruction, and faces up to life in prison if convicted. Attorneys plan to use an insanity defense, court records show. Federal agents secretly searched Aldawsari's apartment in Lubbock, Texas, twice in the days...

Imagine if your taxes tripled — literally overnight. The so-called Bush tax cuts are set to expire at the end of the year. That means that all of the current income tax rates will rise to pre-2001 levels overnight. The lowest rate will jump from 10% to 15% and the highest from 35% to 39.6%. Although Congress extended all of the cuts at the end of last year, some Democrats have pledged to let the tax cuts expire for the "rich" — individuals making $200,000, and $250,000 for families. Pre-2001, dividends had been taxed at workers' income tax rate. The...

CORRECTION: An earlier version of this story gave the incorrect percent of the public that wants tax breaks across all income levels made permanent. Eighteen percent polled support the position taken by Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney. As President Obama navigates a choppy economy in his reelection bid, he can rely on one comforting fact: Americans continue to strongly embrace his opposition to extending tax breaks for those earning more than $250,000 a year.A new United Technologies/National Journal Congressional Connection Poll shows that only 26 percent of the public wants to see all of the tax breaks created during the...

Liberals are the haters and the bullies. So angry that a woman like Laura Bush - who quietly helped women in Africa without inviting TV crews to record it, who represented - and still represents - the United States with quiet dignity rather than making a constant spectacle of herself, who led by example rather than by bossing everyone around - these feminists are fit to be tied that such a woman would receive an award. Senate Democrats balk at ending Bush-era tax rates for wealthyBy Alexander Bolton - 06/19/12 05:00 AM ET A growing number of Senate Democrats are signaling they are not prepared to raise taxes on anyone in the weak economy unless Congress approves a grand bargain to reduce the deficit. At least seven Democratic senators have declined to rule out supporting a temporary extension of the Bush-era income tax rates, breaking with party leaders who have called for letting the rates expire for people earning more than $1 million per year. That gives Senate Republicans a chance to push a temporary extension...

President Barack Obama's nominee to become the next U.S. ambassador to Iraq withdrew his name on Monday after Republican lawmakers questioned his suitability following revelations that he had engaged in an extramarital affair with a journalist who later became his wife. Brett McGurk, a long-time Iraq expert who had served on the Bush administration's National Security Council, wrote to U.S. President Barack Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton that he was withdrawing "with a heavy heart." "I believe it is in the best interests of the country, and our life together, to withdraw my nomination and serve in another...
