A longtime South Bay preschool may shut down to make way for a condominium complex. St. Elizabeth's Day Home in South San Jose plans to close its doors this summer due to rising costs and a lack of funding. In the meantime, school officials are moving forward on a proposal to change the zoning on the property to allow for a possible sale to a housing developer. St. Elizabeth's Day Home opened in 1907 and is considered to be a local landmark. The school closure would mean 120 preschoolers will have to find new teachers next year. "To know it's...

I have recently secured a Domain address. I'm trying to set up a "Free Email" with Zoho. My domain host has indicated that I have or can create two email addresses, Which I did. When I log into Zoho and go through their "set-up" protocols to "verify" my domain they are asking for stuff that makes no sense to me. I can log into my domain "portal" but can't seem to figure out what ZOHO is looking for. My Domain host is Verio. I would be happy to run a "Join me" session. Please reply with the standard FR jokes....

Nearly 1 million people in the U.S. bought an Apple Watch on the first day of preorders, according to data company Slice Intelligence. Slice found that that 957,000 Americans preordered the smartwatch on Friday's launch. Those customers won't be getting the actual smartwatch until April 24 at the earliest when Apple starts shipping them. Compared to the 720,000 Android Wear devices sold in 2014, Apple had a great turnout for just one day. "Customers have been giving us great feedback and orders have been great, as well," CEO Tim Cook told CNBC. Slice gathered its data from a panel of...

The disappointing March employment report the government released on April 3 [1] finally forced the business press to ‘fess up to the truth, best summed up in words found at the Associated Press [2]: ”For months, the U.S. economy’s strength has been flagging.”That admission takes “too little, too late” to a whole new level.During the past several months, business scribes and broadcasters have largely pretended that all is well, constructing and maintaining a Potemkin-like facade of a prosperous economy, even as the vast majority of hard-number economic indicators turned in performances ranging from middling to awful. To prop up their...

Roger Horowitz was out Friday, ripping down fliers he posted about his missing dog, Ollie — not because the dog has been found, but because he's afraid of being hit with the huge fine. Horowitz and his wife, Annemarie, had recently adopted Ollie, a rescue dog that had been shot in Georgia. "He'd been abused by his previous owner and actually shot with a shotgun," Horowitz said. "So he has about 23 pellets still in his back." On March 30, Horowitz was walking Ollie near Georgia Avenue and Euclid Street NW when the dog broke loose. "A car just backfired,...

As far as $100 doughnuts go, Jeanne Kaminski believes the Donutopia is a good deal. The doughnut — the humble fried confectionary of the masses — has been blinged out to the extreme at West Kelowna’s Dolicious Donuts. “Each one takes three to five hours to make. The value of the doughnut is more than $100,” said Dolicious owner Kaminski, co-creator of the lavish delicacy. The Donutopia, which rests in a sugar bowl and is decorated with 24-karat gold flakes and edible sugar “diamonds,” starts with the same simple, yet secret, 40-year-old recipe that Dolicious uses for all its doughnuts....
  • Is Uber Really Faster than an Ambulance?

A blog post on Medium got a lot of attention recently for claiming that Uber drivers are now faster than ambulances in New York City. The numbers seemed pretty damning for the ambulances: the median Uber rider in Manhattan can expect to get a ride in 2.42 minutes. In the outer boroughs, the median wait is still just 3.1 minutes. The median ambulance wait? About twice as long at 6.1 minutes. We wondered, how does the Bay Area stack up? Newsweek obtained some figures from Uber and mapped them. According to Newsweek, the median wait time for an Uber in...

U.S. Rep. Sean Duffy is throwing his support behind fellow Wisconsin Republican Gov. Scott Walker in the 2016 presidential race. "I'm backing Scott Walker," Duffy told the crowd gathered in Milwaukee Saturday for the Young America's Foundation Midwest Freedom Conference. Walker is not officially a presidential candidate, but he has ramping up his travel in the United States and internationally, and his political organization, Our American Revival, has been hiring staff as all signs point to a presidential run. When asked how Walker's likely presidential run would affect Wisconsin, the Wausau Republican and former reality television star applauded the move....

Conventional agriculture is causing enormous environmental damage in Germany, warns a study by the country’s Federal Environment Agency, saying a transition to organic farming and stricter regulation is urgently needed. EurActiv Germany reports. Spanning over 50% of the country, agriculture takes up by far the biggest amount of land in the country, and is one of its most important economic sectors. But intensive farming still harms the environment to an alarming extent, according to a study conducted by the Federal Environment Agency (UBA). The use of pesticides and fertilizers, as well as intensive animal husbandry, have a negative impact on...

Companies like Netflix and Google aren't just fun places to work. They're also two of the highest-paying employers in the US. Glassdoor, an online jobs and careers community, just released a new report which identifies the 15 companies with the highest median total compensation — which includes base salary and other forms of income, such as commissions, tips, and bonuses — as reported by US-based employees on the Glassdoor website over the past year. Turns out the average employee at the No. 1 company, New York-based law firm Skadden Arps, rakes in over $180,00 a year. That's nearly four times...

New understanding of electromagnetism could enable 'antennas on a chip' Apr 08, 2015 Enlarge Anechoic chamber. Credit: University of Cambridge A team of researchers from the University of Cambridge have unravelled one of the mysteries of electromagnetism, which could enable the design of antennas small enough to be integrated into an electronic chip. These ultra-small antennas - the so-called 'last frontier' of semiconductor design - would be a massive leap forward for wireless communications. In new results published in the journal Physical Review Letters, the researchers have proposed that electromagnetic waves are generated not only from the acceleration of electrons,...

Apple Watch reviews were published yesterday. The majority of reviewers thought the Apple Watch was a great device and has potential to be a game changer in how they use technology. The problem is that unless you read every review, you wouldn't have known that. Instead, the collective conclusion from the web yesterday was that the Apple Watch flopped with early reviews. There were 21 Apple Watch reviews published, but the 4 reviews that were more critical of the device got the most attention, leaving the 14 glowing reviews behind. Meanwhile, most of the important features of the Watch such...

Maria Altmann, an octogenarian Jewish refugee, takes on the Austrian government to recover artwork she believes rightfully belongs to her family. We saw this movie tonight and just loved it. The Austrian interiors were sumptuous, and Helen Mirren was outstanding -- approaching her role with tenacity and good humor. We give it 4 thumbs up and 5 stars. It's the best movie we've seen this year. Comments?

At the very end of the news items, almost as an aside, came word of a unprecedented trial that Microsoft is undertaking "in partnership" with popular Chinese handset manufacturer Xiaomi. According to Myerson, a select group of Xiaomi Mi 4 owners (power users, he calls them) will be invited to test out a custom Windows 10 ROM on their devices. Devices that ship running not Windows out of the box, but Android. Let me restate that, so...
