One of the most influential books of my life is the book Amusing ourselves to Death by Neil Postman. This is a must read by any who would call themselves an intellectual or a thinking person. The book discusses how the medium is the message, and how the form of communications which we utilize greatly impact the information that is being transposed. Postman goes on to bemoan the negative impacts of television, radio, and the telegraph on society (all before the Internet and the smartphone). The progression from books to newspapers to radio to television to the internet and now...

Napoleon’s invasion of Egypt greatly alarmed the Orthodox Christian church. Many in the church saw the invasion as a fulfillment of Daniel 11:42, where the Antichrist is prophesied to invade and take Egypt. Daniel 11:42: “He shall stretch out his hand against the countries, and the land of Egypt shall not escape.” The Orthodox church was also alarmed by the attempt made by Napoleon to create a Jewish state in Palestine. This regathering of the Jewish people in the Land of Israel would fulfill many Biblical prophecies that Jews spread out to the four corners of the world would once...

Napoleon had also raised alarm throughout the Christian church all over Europe by his broad appeal to the followers of the dominant religions of the world. It has been believed by the church throughout the centuries that the antichrist would be “all things to all people”, and Napoleon’s use of religion for political purposes seemed to eerily resemble that. In his 1798 Egyptian campaign, Napoleon attempted to win over the Muslims throughout the middle east by announcing his faith in the religion of Islam: “People of Egypt! You will be told by our enemies that I am come to destroy...

Situated on mount Parnassus in central Greece lies the city of Delphi. While the city now is mostly ruins, for over a thousand years the ancient world referred to it as the Center of the World. Millions from around the ancient world would flock to the city to inquire of the Oracle. To a select few, the Oracle would sit in the temple of Apollo and give prophecies or answer questions of business, trade, and war. Alexander the Great was said to have visited the Oracle to inquire as to whether he would conquer the world. While modernity can scoff...

While we hope to never experience a revolution in our lifetime in America, it is important that we understand and learn from the revolutions of history. For part 1 of my series on revolutions, we are going to look at one of the defining revolutions in history — The French Revolution of 1789. Many today wrongly believe that the French Revolution was a success. By all measures, it was rather an abject failure, delaying France’s adoption of Democracy by more than one hundred years. This movement, which in many ways began as a noble cause in support of liberty and...

In Milton’s Paradise Lost, Satan famously says “the mind is its own place and in itself can make a Heaven of Hell, a Hell of Heaven”. Satan is in Hell while he makes this rousing speech to his fellow fallen angels. Surrounded by darkness and pain, he is urging himself and those listening to ignore their reality. Satan would have it that you and I were that blind as well. And we have been. For years, Americans have lived in a country that has grown stagnate. We are often told that innovation is growing “exponentially” while “Moore’s Law” is touted...

In 1848, revolution swept across Europe and the world. The “February Revolution” in Paris lit the flame as the current world order was crumbling. In the days leading up to the overthrow of the French King Louis-Phillippe, the historian Alexis de Tocqueville commented on the state of Paris: “One thing was.. really ominous and terrible; and that was the appearance of Paris on my return. I found in the capital a hundred thousand armed workmen formed into regiments, out of work, dying of hunger, but with their minds crammed with vain theories and visionary hopes. I saw society cut into...

While we previously discussed the French Revolution of 1789, we will now look to better understand the year 1848 — a world caught up in the fire of revolution. This fire was widespread around the globe with consequences far and wide. And out of this overturned world, came the rise of a prophet. In 1848, revolution swept across Europe and the world. Between 1935 and 1975, Will and Ariel Durant published a series of volumes that together were known as “The Story of Civilization.” They basically told human history (mostly Western history) as an accumulation of great ideas and innovations, from the Egyptians, through Athens, Magna Carta, the Age of Faith, the Renaissance and the Declaration of the Rights of Man. The series was phenomenally successful, selling over two million copies. That series encapsulated the Western civilization narrative that people, at least in Europe and North America, used for most of the past few centuries to explain their place in the world...

This week, Switzerland's attorney general completed a legal opinion on the question of whether Snowden could be granted political asylum if he traveled to Switzerland to testify about the National Security Agency's surveillance activities in the Swiss homeland. The AG's office concluded that Snowden would be given asylum as long as prior obligations made by higher-level Swiss officials did not take priority.

“Those who hate Israel hate America,” he continued, as the boos and calls for him to leave the stage got louder. “Those who hate Jews hate Christians. If those in this room will not recognize that, then my heart weeps. If you hate the Jewish people you are not reflecting the teachings of Christ. And the very same people who persecute and murder Christians right now, who crucify Christians, who behead children, are the very same people who target Jews for their faith, for the same reason.” Read more: http://dailycaller.com/2014/09/10/ted-cruz-booed-off-stage-at-middle-east-christian-conference-video/#ixzz3CyNwHqHN

Russian President Vladimir Putin has issued a threat to outgoing European Commission President Jose Manual Barroso that he could "take Kiev in two weeks" if he wanted, Italian media reports have said.
