Thanks for the tip...sucker! This is gonna advance my DoomsDay project by ten years! With proper Federal funding, too.

For those of you who want to save the world, I suggest that you just use some big duct tape.

That distribution map of yours doesn't represent Ohio very well.In Ohio, there are so many of the critters (actually inside EVERY county) that you can hunt them without restrictions of any kind if you hold a hunting license or if you are a land-owner.

As noted above, if you have livestock, you will have to worry about the Yotes. Newy Year's Eve I was camping in Southern Ohio, and we had a yote yell at us from inside 200 feet. Even with no leaves on the trees, our spotlight couldn't find him. Neither could our bullets...(looks the other way, trailing off).

I am always suprised at the vocalizations that they make!

I have a cousin that decided her baby boy will not eat meat.

I'm not kidding when I say that the kid didn't have hair until he was 5 years old!

I saw it here on the Free Republic..."If God didn't want us to eat animals, He wouldn't have made them out of meat!"

The flak jackets from Vietnam were ballistic nylon and would help against grenade and artillery fragments, but were not resistant against rifle fire.

Thank you very much, that one's been rattlin my brain. Couldn't find the info anywhere!

Kern recalled that troops in Vietnam had to be ordered to wear cumbersome flak jackets...

I've been wondering for quite some time now, what were those flak jackets made of? What material provided protection?

I've seen them for sale in magazines for around $60. What is the intended protection level?

  • Linux is not open source, says Microsoft

Standard baseline Linux is open source, commercial versions that cannot legally be copied ad infinitum are not. Red Hat's products cannot, you are not allowed to duplicate without purchasing support agreements for each copy that you use. In fact, Red Hat's license gives them the right to raid your office and check your compliance at any time.

I'm here to second that. Open source isn't so open anymore. You are not allowed to copy and distribute copies of most of the Linux flavors. As a matter of fact, if you read the included text documents...most of the third party software programs cannot be copied and sold without license.

Man, it's great listening to you (fellow) Linux geeks.

I have owned and installed Red Hat, Mandrake, Slackware, Caldera and Turbo Linux systems. As the years went on, the installations became more reliable. I like Mandrake's installation.

Workstation or Server? Server for sure (right now). You can take a lower end PC, install Linux on it, and have your web and email server running in minutes.

I've shot the Desert Eagle .44. It's heavy, but a smooth shooting gun!

Another thing...I've been face to face with black bears many a time in the Allegheny Mts. I've had one halfway in our tent...trying to get my buddies brown paper bag full of food!

I will tell you first of all, I started arming myself. Screw the law. I would rather have a fine, than end up dead, or worse yet, watch one of my family members killed by a bear.

ON THE OTHER HAND...don't try to tell me that you need some monstrous weapon for protection. Any firearm, ANY, is better than nothing. We are not HUNTING bears, we are concerned about self-protection. BIG Difference. MOST black bears take off if they are startled...I threw rocks at one (from a very safe distance)and chased him from the campsite.

After all, we are not talking about Hollywood-sized bears...just black bears. Black bears that deserve respect.

    Hello Freepers (and Lurkers)...

I could probably start an entire thread with this discussion, but I figured that I would just throw this up real quick.

    I NEED YOUR HELP...

I have an friend down the street that tells me things about guns, hunting and especially the military that I know are false. Now, when someone tells me that the sky is any color other than blue, I tend to argue. I have been around guns my entire life, and I (with help from freepers) have a very good grasp of the military. I know about military guns, ammo, jets, missiles, Naval vessels w/ complement, etc.

Now this individual constantly tells me things that are inaccurate and although I argue, he is quite adamant about the things he states. I know many, if not all of the things he says are bogus. I would like to ask you for help, especially those of you who are in the military, or were in the military. I know you all can help me, you are a very smart bunch a' cookies...OK?

Just reply to this article, I'll be checking it out here and there for responses. Just confirm, or deny the statements that will follow, or even paste a link so that I can verify information for myself.

My friend tells me that he was in the Army. I have my doubts to what exactly he was involved in/ with. One day he says that he used to be in the Delta Force, the next day he was in the Rangers and so on. He supposedly cross-trained with the Airborne. When I asked him about his designation, he says he was an 11V, but cross-trained as...a medic, a sniper, etc. He never tells you specific information, such as boot camp or etc. Friends of mine that were in the Airborne will tell you all knds of stuff, but he has no colorful stories. (I know, I know...this is the tip of the iceberg).

    He tried telling me that:

    * The military used the Ruger Mini 14 in VietNam in between the M-14 and the M-16.

    * It was OK to possess and even use a silencer so long as it was permenantly attatched to the muzzle.

    * While in the Army, he was stationed in Korea, Germany, Grenada, and Somalia (even though he can't properly pronounce Mogadishu).

    * He carried an AR-15 of his (which I have seen and fired before) in the service, and brought it home with him. Funny that he would carry a civilian gun, heh?

    * The 9mm luger is a super-sonic round. I told him that the 9MM is one of the slowest bullets around, @ about 950 fps. Oh no, he insists...the 9mm is supersonic.

    * High-power sniper rifles always have silencers and laser-sights. Of course he trained with one in the special forces.

    * If you parachute out of a helicopter, the force of the rotors will pull you up, so you have to be careful. I know, I know...you are not telling me anything new...

    * It's illegal to kill a fox here in Ohio. When I showed him the dates for fox season in the hunting laws (I read the laws every year! He and other people quote bogus info. from the book all the time!), he always says..."well it used to be illegal in the 80's when I started hunting". Actaully, I could post another entire thread on the bogus hunting info. that he relays to me.

I've hunted with him, and he wore military BDU's, just as I do. I bought mine at the gun shows, and removed the name tag and the Army tag. His name tag was missing too, but he said (get this) that his mother went through his BDU's and removed the name tag.

Whenever you confront him with any issue, he'll backtrack and change the tune a little. I need a way to confirm his military career, short of paying for the info. I leave this tale for you, my fellow freeps, tell me what ya got!

A Frenchman visiting the USA waited on a long line at a McDonald's. He finally got to the counter and ordered "a glass of red wine, please". The counter person apologized and explained "sorry sir, but we do not sell red wine". Frenchman "Well then I will have a white wine, please." Counterperson: "I'm sorry sir, but we do not sell wine at all" Frenchman (perplexed): "You mean all these people are here for the food?".

That's what I was going to say...the Death card represents transition, I believe. There are other cards that represent tragedy, such as the Tower. No, I'm not some swami reading cards, I just happen to know a little about the Tarot.

My guess is that some copycat type of person (or perhaps someone setting up their patsy) may have left it, or perhaps it was left by the perp to confuse his profile.
