LOS ANGELES - Simon Wiesenthal, the Holocaust survivor who helped track down Nazi war criminals following World War II, then spent the later decades of his life fighting anti-Semitism and prejudice against all people, died Tuesday. He was 96. Wiesenthal died in his sleep at his home in Vienna, said Rabbi Marvin Hier, dean and founder of the Simon Wiesenthal Center in Los Angeles. “I think he’ll be remembered as the conscience of the Holocaust. In a way he became the permanent representative of the victims of the Holocaust, determined to bring the perpetrators of the greatest crime to justice,”

Brooklyn College's School of Education has begun to base evaluations of aspiring teachers in part on their commitment to social justice, raising fears that the college is screening students for their political views. The School of Education at the CUNY campus initiated last fall a new method of judging teacher candidates based on their "dispositions," a vogue in teacher training across the country that focuses on evaluating teachers' values, apart from their classroom performance. Critics of the assessment policy warned that aspiring teachers are being judged on how closely their political views are aligned with their instructor's. Ultimately, they said,...

Sign of Weakness? Do Overseas Terror Strikes Suggest Al Qaeda Inability to Hit U.S.? Analysis By Fawaz A. Gerges and Christopher Isham Nov. 22 — The recent suicide car bombings in Saudi Arabia and Turkey indicate a dramatic shift in al Qaeda's tactics. In the past year, al Qaeda (which officials have blamed in the Turkey attacks) and its regional affiliates have been attacking pro-Western Muslim regimes and soft targets from Tunisia...

Conversation With Khomeini The ayatollah's grandson calls for a U.S. invasion of Iran. By Christopher Hitchens Posted Monday, October 6, 2003, at 11:03 AM PT I have no respect for the hereditary principle and neither does Shiite Islam, which considers earthly kingship to be profane. But no one can be completely uninterested in heredity per se, and my first thought, on meeting Hossein Khomeini, was that he has his grandfather's eyebrows. Still, our conversation quickly banished the notion that this 45-year-old cleric is the least bit interested in running for his grandpa's job. He is a relatively junior cleric—a sayeed—but...

COLLEGE PARK, Maryland (AP) -- A few weeks before ordering an escalation of the Vietnam War, President Nixon matter-of-factly raised the idea of using a nuclear bomb. The notion was quickly shot down by national security adviser Henry Kissinger.

Nixon's abrupt suggestion, buried in 500 hours of tapes released Thursday at the National Archives, came after Kissinger laid out a variety of options for stepping up the war effort, such as attacking power plants and docks, in an April 25, 1972, conversation in the Executive Office Building.
