Millions of Shiite Muslims across the globe are commemorating one of the holiest days in the Islamic calendar: Ashura, which mourns the death of the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad. In some parts of the world these celebrations come in the shape of self-flagellation using knives and swords or walking on hot coals - and even young children are forced to take part. These images from India and Pakistan show boys of primary school age running across burning embers, and young men covered in blood from whipping themselves with knives on chains.

Winners like Game of Thrones’ Peter Dinklage, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’s Rachel Brosnahan, Seven Seconds’ Regina King, Barry’s Henry Winkler, Westworld’s Thandie Newton, The Americans‘ Mathew Rhys, The Crown’s Claire Foy and The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story’s Darren Criss may be making shelf space for their new trophies after celebrating last night but for NBC, the 70th Primetime Emmys maybe a hangover that’s hard to shake.

The U.S. military is trying to recover the oil form a ship that's been underwater for 72 years. In an interesting twist, it's not even an American warship. The United States captured the German heavy cruiser Prinz Eugen as a war prize after the end of World War II. The Prinz Eugen capsized in 1946 after being nuked—twice—during the atomic bomb tests at Bikini Atoll. For decades, experts have feared that the radioactive ship's oil might leak into the Pacific. Now the Pentagon is trying to do something about it.

The United States will admit no more than 30,000 refugees in the coming fiscal year, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Monday, the lowest number in decades and a steep cut from the 45,000 allowed in this year. The new number is a small fraction of one percentage point of the almost 69 million displaced people in the world today. But Pompeo said the United States remains the most generous nation when other U.S. aid to refugees is taken into account, including funds to shelter and feed refugees in camps closer to their home countries.

Syrian antiaircraft missiles shot down a Russian military aircraft carrying 15 service members off the Syrian coast Monday night, the Russian Defense Ministry said. Moscow angrily blamed the Israeli military for what appeared to be a case of friendly fire, saying the Iraelis were conducting air raids in the area and had given only a minute’s warning, too little for the Il-20 surveillance plane to fly out of harm’s way.

t seems that every other day, a Bridezilla meltdown goes viral. Last month, a bride “vented” on Facebook after her guests declined a $1500 donation towards her special day. And today, another bride has some… warped expectations about her wedding. In a viral Facebook post posted to Reddit, a bride has completely slammed her guests for not RSVPing to her $2000 destination wedding in Hawaii. She began by admitting that a $3000 wedding in Thailand might have been too much. But that a $2000 Hawaii destination wedding is “within everyone’s reach”. Except, erm… It’s not.

“I was flying a kite and it got caught on a nanny,” says one of the little Banks children, offering as good an explanation as any for the arrival of the ultimate child-minder in this new trailer for Disney’s Mary Poppins Returns. Directed by Rob Marshall and starring Emily Blunt in the title role, the musical, floating down just before this Christmas, is a sequel to 1964’s Julie Andrews classic, and judging by this trailer seems spot-on in terms of tone and style. There’s even a big, splashy and colorful animation-live action hybrid scene, complete with penguins.

There’s a Japanese saying most high-school students here know, “If you win, you’re the Imperial Army. If you lose, you’re scurvy pirates.” It’s still very applicable to sports in modern Japan, especially when the players are of mixed race. “If you win, you’re Japanese. If you lose, you’re a hafu (half-Japanese).” “Hafu” is the term in vogue for any child with one parent who is not fully Japanese; the term is controversial because it seems to imply that hafu lack something and is also reminiscent of the pejorative “half-breed.” Yet, alternate terms, like daburu (double), haven’t caught on.

A newlywed has been branded 'Britain's biggest bridezilla' after holding five different wedding ceremonies during which she wore 13 dresses. Sandra Igwe, who married the same man five times, spent £70,000 in total on her wedding celebrations. The first two ceremonies were held in Nigeria, at a cost of around £2,500 to each guest - one of whom had to take out a loan in order to attend. Speaking on This Morning, Sandra said she doesn't feel guilty about expecting people to attend multiple ceremonies, because they should want to be there for her at such a 'significant' time. She...

More than half of all workplace tasks will be carried out by machines by 2025, organizers of the Davos economic forum said in a report released Monday that highlights the speed with which the labor market will change in coming years. The World Economic Forum estimates that machines will be responsible for 52 percent of the division of labor as share of hours within seven years, up from just 29 percent today. By 2022, the report says, roughly 75 million jobs worldwide will be lost, but that could be more than offset by the creation of 133 million new jobs.

The fight over Brett Kavanaugh’s Supreme Court nomination looks much different after Christine Blasey Ford came forward in a Washington Post interview and said that he attempted to sexually assault her when the two were in high school. What happens next? Will President Trump and Senate Republicans stick with Kavanaugh? Right now, we have more questions than answers. Here are the big ones … How do the looming midterms affect Republicans’ choices? A big part of this story comes down to timing. An investigation of the allegations, as Democrats have called for, would almost certainly take at least a few...

Puerto Rico Gov. Ricardo Rosselló argued Saturday that residents of the US territory are treated like "second-class citizens" and said "we need to solve the century-old problem of colonialism in Puerto Rico." In addition to calling for more resources to help rebuild after Hurricane Maria, the governor told CNN's S.E. In an 11-season stretch between national championships in 2002 and 2014, many of the Big Ten’s marquee programs found themselves wading through varying messes. Michigan couldn’t find the right coach after Lloyd Carr retired, Penn State’s program dealt with the Jerry Sandusky scandal and Ohio State navigated the ugly end of the Jim Tressel era. Everything changed for the Big Ten’s national perception in 2014. Ohio State stunned Alabama in the Sugar Bowl in the semifinals in the first season of the College Football Playoff. Urban Meyer led the Buckeyes to that first CFP title, and Ohio State reset the...

As many have said about socialism, the issue is that you eventually run out of other people’s money. Socialist and rising Democratic star Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is bound for Congress on an agenda that will cost trillions. $40+ trillion in the first decade alone for her left wing goodies of free college and single-payer health care, those are the two big items. In three decades, the price tag for American democratic socialism will hit $218 trillion. But remember, socialists, like the pigs in Animal Farm, they don’t have to sacrifice a thing. Is Ocasio-Cortez more of a limousine liberal than a...
