Gun owners who have a concealed-carry permit can now take their weapon into select city parks following a 4-1 vote by City Council on Tuesday night that repealed a 2009 policy that banned them. The resolution vote was preceded by 14 citizens voicing their opinions on the issue, most disagreeing with the lifting of the ban and those in the minority thanking the governing body for allowing Second Amendment rights to be preserved in Bristol.

NASHVILLE — Applications for Tennessee handgun carry permits increased by more than 100 percent during the first six months of this year, a period that saw the Legislature enact new laws protecting permit holders from criminal prosecution and prohibiting public release of their names. The state Department of Safety and Homeland Security, which issues the permits, reported Thursday that it accepted 86,334 handgun carry permit applications at driver services centers from Jan. 1 through June 30, compared with 40,503 applications accepted during the first six months of 2012 — an increase of 113 percent.

OAK RIDGE — A woman with suspected mental issues was able to drive into the main entrance and all the way through the high-security Y-12 National Security Complex unhindered Thursday morning, according to an Oak Ridge Police Department report obtained by the News Sentinel. The security breach occurred less than a year after three protesters cut through a series of security fences and walked to the innermost sanctum of Y-12, the country’s largest repository of weapons-grade uranium.

The gun glinted in the dark as the man turned toward Anthony Smith and fired. “I saw the gun,” Smith said. “I heard the shot. I didn’t hit the ground. I fired.” The gunman missed, but Smith hit his mark. Knoxville Police Department officers found the body of Justin Pierre Jackson, 30, in a nearby alley less than half an hour later.

When Knoxville Police Chief David Rausch announced in late January that the department would no longer use the .40-caliber Glock pistol that officers have carried since 2002, he didn’t mention any problems with the gun. Rausch said the replacement gun, a .45-caliber Sig Sauer, had more stopping power than the .40-calibers. Testing among officers also revealed they were more accurate using the Sig Sauer, he said.

Two suspects, one armed with an "assault-type rifle," robbed a Cocke County bank and disarmed a responding police officer at gunpoint before making their escape this afternoon, authorities said. The robbery was reported about 3 p.m. at the Tennessee State Bank, 107 Epley Road, in Newport, according to Marshall Stone, supervisory agent with the FBI's Knoxville division. A nearby Newport Police Department officer was the first to respond to the holdup alarm, entering the bank while both suspects, dressed in black, still were inside, said Newport Police Chief Maurice Shults.

To see Clueless Costas blithely skip into the middle of this tragedy with such shallow and demonstrably false assumptions belies his reputation as a heretofore respected reporter. The mountain of evidence to contradict his anti-gun assertions looms large and would have been easy to find.
