First of all, if the facts are incorrect the argument can be dismissed without consideration. Trisomy 18 is not Down’s Syndrome. The vast majority of babies born with Trisomy 18 die before birth or within a few days after, very unlike babies with Down Syndrome.
It doesn’t make sense to continue such a pregnancy when the mother’s health is at risk, and she doesn’t want to take that risk. I think she and her doctors should make the decision. Each situation is complex—too complex to make laws that are adequate. Congresswoman Mace is correct about that, and it’s a losing issue.
Elijah’s parents should have been better supported by the medical community. Our healthcare “system” is a disaster.
