Taney recognized the threat in his Dred Scott ruling, but as “Freedom National” shows (and it seems some people are afraid of looking at that), SOUTHERNERS and Confederates recognized the threat as well, which is why they pushed for secession. It was understood by most Southern leaders that the definition of “personhood” (NOT a “euphemysm”) would eventually triumph.

NO, you showed nothing. I showed YOU a huge intense history book that proves just the opposite, that in fact they NEVER used the terms as euphemisms PRECISELY so that they could be freed as persons. It’s the same distinction as was used for “indentured servants,” which, despite pro-slavers/pro-Confederates’ claims, ALWAYS had powerful distinctions (including marriage) from slave status.

The devil is in the details. You might check out “Freedom National” before you post again. It seems, from his evidence, that large numbers of Confederates understood this quite properly. That’s what they were afraid of. Personhood WAS a “federal matter.” This is precisely why Taney went out of his way to try to restore a definition of property to slaves by trying to deny blacks all elements of personhood. Again, the scholarship on this is abundant if you choose to look at it.

Actually, no. What he does in “Freedom National” is look at legal cases, for example, where there were in fact big distinctions. No PERSON could ever be PROPERTY in the U.S. Constitution.

Yep. Great “new” book (last 7 years or so) called “Freedom National,” that shows how the abolitionist movement figured out the word “slave” or “slavery” were not in the Constitution, but rather unfree “PERSONS.” In other words, from the very beginning, the Founders saw slaves as people. The Confederacy wanted them re-defined as PROPERTY.

This was the key battle, and the South could not win. By 1850 its only two options were losing slavery peaceably or through a war.

Good questions, typically asked.

1) NO test bombs were to be dropped for two major reasons. First, there was a great deal of skepticism that it would affect the Japanese at all. After all, we had leveled Tokyo in a firebombing, but the Japanese were still fighting. Second, we had a very limited supply of bombs-—perhaps six by Christmas. WE DID NOT KNOW IF A BOMB WORKED. The only test was a stationary device. No one had ever dropped a bomb. So you would use up one of perhaps six, and still not know that the other five worked. Likewise, if the Japanese saw a dud, it would embolden them.

2) The missions were “easy” only because we had bombed Japan so badly they stopped sending up interceptors, and never for a one- or two-plane mission.

3) Germany had already surrendered in May 1945. The objective was to use the a bomb on Germany, but they surrendered before we could.

By all accounts, the bombs saved about 1 MILLION American casualties (perhaps 100,000 more deaths) and up to 10 MILLION Japanese. They were ready to fight for every inch of their home islands, and our invasion plans were badly flawed, completely missing the insertion of a whole division from China in the landing zones. Moreover, NO accounting for weather was made; and ALL estimates excluded the Navy (which was losing ships in these invasions BIGLY to kamikazes or to accidents. So even the “official” estimates were way, way too low.

Japanese historian Asada who gained access to the War Council papers found that even after the first bomb they weren’t even considering surrender.

You are correct. Read Burt Folsom’s great book, “New Deal or Raw Deal?” He exposes how the slimy FDR used the tax system to pummel opponents, dished out money like candy to get reelected in certain districts, and was 100% liberal.
