JERUSALEM (Reuters) - An Israeli attack on Iranian nuclear sites looks "unavoidable" given the apparent failure of sanctions to deny Tehran technology with bomb-making potential, one of Prime Minister Ehud Olmert's deputies said on Friday. "If Iran continues with its program for developing nuclear weapons, we will attack it. The sanctions are ineffective," Transport Minister Shaul Mofaz told the mass-circulation Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper. ...

DANVILLE, Calif. - A Danville woman faces arson charges after she allegedly set fires at two gas stations and a coffee house, saying she was protesting high gas prices. The woman, 64, remained Thursday in a Contra Costa jail on $810,000 bail on suspicion of premeditated arson and burglary. Police say the woman used a fireplace log and a lighter to set fires in the restrooms of an Arco station, a Chevron station and a Starbucks on Wednesday. No structural damage was reported at the locations. Police later found the woman at a nearby fast food restaurant with eight fireplace...

More and more Oklahomans are carrying concealed weapons these days. In fact, there are so many new requests the state Bureau of Investigation can barely keep up. Last year, there was a 45-percent increase in new licenses -- the largest jump since the concealed carry law went into effect. It is legal in the State of Oklahoma to carry a handgun in your purse on your belt if you have a license. It's been that way for more than a decade. Some laws have made it easier. The governor signed legislation expanding gun rights in 2006. Some of the fees...

restaurant is open as usual after the owner shot two armed robbers who broke into the business last night. In an unusual twist, both robbers had guns, but neither was loaded. News On 6 crime reporter Lori Fullbright reports detectives say the 16-year-old suspect was carrying a Colt .22 revolver and had bullets in his pocket, but not in the gun. The 14-year-old was carrying a Ruger .45 revolver that was also empty. It's baffling they would take unloaded guns into a robbery, knowing full well they could encounter someone with a loaded gun and that's exactly what happened. ...

ASHKELON, Israel - Residents of this beachside city are still coming to terms with being on the front lines of Israel's battle against Hamas militants. There is now a plan to allow college students to carry weapons on any public campus. The legislation is on its way to the state house. The text of House Bill 2513 says any student who is at least 21 years old and has a concealed carry permit would be allowed to bring a firearm to school. It comes as campus violence seems to be on the increase. Everyone at OSU-Tulsa we spoke to about the plan doesn't like it. They already have a lot of security on campus. One example -- push a button on a phone and it...

Nearly half the Senate is pushing the Bush administration to let gun owners carry handguns and other firearms into national parks and wildlife refuges. Forty-seven lawmakers, including Jim Inhofe and Tom Coburn of Oklahoma, have signed a letter asking Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne to lift Reagan-era restrictions that prevent citizens from carrying readily accessible firearms onto lands managed by the National Park Service and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. In a letter drafted by Senator Mike Crapo of Idaho, the senators say current regulations, developed in the early 1980s, quote, "infringe on the rights of law-abiding gun owners who...

JOHNSTON, Iowa (Reuters) - The Iraq war dominated the presidential campaign on Friday, with Hillary Clinton facing charges she flip-flopped on withdrawing forces and the White House rebuffing Mike Huckabee's criticism of its foreign policy. As the violence in Iraq has fallen in recent months in response to the deployment of additional U.S. troops, the war has become less of a daily issue among candidates for the November 2008 election. ...

A Bartlesville High School junior is reaping rewards for improving the body armor of United States troops. Melissa Carvell was awarded an $8,000 scholarship from the U.S. Navy and $1,500 from the U.S. Air Force for her efforts in reinforcing ceramic plates in body armor with carbon fibers. She was recognized during a State Board of Education meeting November 29, receiving a certificate from State Superintendent Sandy Garrett in Oklahoma City. The body armor currently used by U.S. forces is basically comprised of ceramic plates placed inside of Kevlar sleeves. Through her research, Melissa Carvell determined the strength of the...

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney on Tuesday said rival Rudy Giuliani "had nothing but praise" when then-first lady Hillary Rodham Clinton proposed a universal health care plan. Romney's campaign cited a 1994 New York Times article quoting the former New York mayor as praising the Clinton plan for "doing some pretty good things." The plan was never enacted. ...

CARACAS, Venezuela - President Hugo Chavez said Sunday he is putting relations with Colombia "in the freezer" after its president ended the Venezuelan leader's role mediating with leftist rebels in the neighboring country. The announcement drew a strong rebuke from Colombian President Alvaro Uribe, who said Chavez's actions suggest he wants to see a "terrorist government" run by leftist rebels in Bogota. Uribe also suggested Chavez might be looking to stir up conflict to boost his image ahead of a referendum on constitutional changes next weekend. ...

SAN FRANCISCO - Most Americans think they're helping the earth when they recycle their old computers, televisions and cell phones. But chances are they're contributing to a global trade in electronic trash that endangers workers and pollutes the environment overseas. While there are no precise figures, activists estimate that 50 to 80 percent of the 300,000 to 400,000 tons of electronics collected for recycling in the U.S. each year ends up overseas. Workers in countries such as China, India and Nigeria then use hammers, gas burners and their bare hands to extract metals, glass and other recyclables, exposing themselves and...

LONDON - The French have their "Liberté, égalité, fraternité." The Americans have "In God we trust." Even tiny nations like Antigua and Fiji have stirring calls to nationhood, faith, solidarity. Keen to redefine an increasingly diverse nation and its values, the government has launched a quest for a national maxim. Meant to be "truly representative," the motto will be arrived at by 1,000 members of the British public. This week, the BBC and the Times newspaper jump-started the process by soliciting suggestions on their websites. ...
