In Mount Vernon, like so many other communities in our country, there are large contingents of non English speaking immigrants. Are the Russians,Dutch,Swedish,Norwegians, expecting American taxpayers to teach their children in THEIR native languages? No. They want their children to learn "the English" but yet retain their culture and share it with us. Hard working legal immigrants have always been welcome in America!

Latin is the root language of many languages and to undersand Latin helps an educated person to understand other languages. It also helps us to understand unfamilar words in English. If High School graduates were proficient in Latin, scores would be much higher on the SATs.

Why Spanish then? Why not Latin?
Lest you think me a xenophobe, let me cite an example of someone I admire. About three years ago we met an elderly gentleman of Mexican descent who came to the US as a child and worked in the fields, worked to learn English so well that he achieved the American dream, served in the armed forces and later went on to teach medicine at UCLA. His family CHOSE to learn English as Americans so they could achieve a better life for their children. They kept their culture but excelled because they learned to integrate into the American culture.
Our cultural heritage continues to slip away to people who did not work for it, did not build it, do not respect it... In order to keep America strong, we need to continue to educate our students in the govenment schools in English only.
