War and peace in Afghanistan KILLER MASTERMIND: Osama bin Laden By Opiyo Oloya WAR is hell, someone once said and nothing has changed to contradict that sentiment. Smart bombs notwithstanding, war remains barbaric, brutal and bloody. But, last week, for just one gleaming moment, war was actually sweet. This was during the surrender of Taliban forces to their archenemy the Northern Alliance in the northern Afghanistan city of Konduz. As the world watched, former enemies who had sworn to slit each other throats, exchanged high-fives, warm embraces, laughter and sat down to meals of roast beef and rice. Call ...

I'm getting some strange results on the new AT&T Broadband service. Pages load slowly in comparison to how fast @Home used to load them, but speed tests show a fast connection (1.2 Megabits per second). Two different testing services just reported the same 1.2 Mbps download speed, but the service is slooowwwww . . . Any other new AT&T subscribers seeing this?

HOAX Comicwriter Garry Trudeau is so determined to undermine President Bush -- he's now resorted to using a phony Internet IQ study of American presidents. In Sunday's Doonesbury installment, Trudeau draws President Bush in conversation with adviser Karl Rove who tells the president that he received a 91 I.Q. in "an I.Q. ranking of modern presidents". Rove also informs Bush that "Clinton got 182 -- double your score." But a quick Internet or Lexis-Nexis search shows that the study is an Internet ...

RESIDENTS of Muswangali Zone in Makindye were amused recently when a man broke his radio. It all started when one of the FM stations ran an advert for one of the presidential candidates. The advert ran, “londa Besigye omusolo gwomutwe ogwelabire”, meaning vote Besigye and forget about graduated tax. The man found it hard to believe the advert and in anger he got his small radio and threw it hard on the ground saying: “Lies! Lies! Why don’t they look for another lie? Why do people think Ugandans have no brains?” According to the man, he cannot see how Uganda ...

January 5, 2001 Sani Siddiq Accra Chronicle has gathered that for the first time in several years, outgoing President Jerry John Rawlings and his better half, First Lady Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings and two of their daughters danced out the old year and welcomed the new at the plush Golden Tulip Hotel, Accra, instead of his ritual vigil at Adabraka, where the family had worshipped on previous New Year eves. I'm Dreaming of a White Kwanzaa by Chris Griffith Kwanzaa is May Day with a menorah. This fraudulent "holiday" is an affront to God, America, and the free market. Kwanzaa's intense glorification of socialist economics should have placed it squarely on the ash heap of history. Instead, with each holiday season, its pernicious tentacles penetrate ever deeper into the national iconography. The mainstream media, forever in search of new ways to display its tolerance, has assimilated Kwanzaa into its pantheon of "approved" holidays. Kwanzaa cards pop up in stores; Kwanzaa books appear on the shelf; even that redoubtable ...
