As much as I empathize with them, they are buggy-whip makers in the age of the Model T. I blame teacher's unions for blocking a full voucher system that would enable us to leap into the 21st century economy. Ever wonder why all these computer certification courses and tests are given by MS and Cisco? Because the average undergraduate in computer science isn't able to handle the work. We're also obsessed with making sure every child graduates highschool when it would be better to send low performers to trade school. College should be restricted to law, medicine or the sciences instead of Binge Drinking 101. Only a few with enough mental agility are able to make it.

Why do people need to make at least 30 to 50k to make ends meet? Look at the taxes taken out. Look at the cost of medicine skyrocketing from federally protected medical and pharmaceutical oligopolies. Look at the cost of real estate in zoning-restricted or rent controlled markets.

And people have to drop their taboos and do what it takes to put food on the table. When my company closed its NY office and I lost my management job, I temped for a year, making photocopies and moving furniture for $7 an hour. I patrolled housing projects in the dead of night in a security guard uniform for $10 an hour. It wasn't much but it paid the bills until I found something else. What's sorely lacking in our education system is discussion of personal finance and how make your own way in the world. Welcome to the post-modern economy. If you can't adapt to new technology, you're left behind. The US steel industry can't compete anymore because foreign steel uses more modern technology to make it cheaper. US steel companies didn't bother innovating because it knew the govt protected its market. IT jobs are going overseas because the market is correcting itself by seeking the lowest possible labor costs. On the other hand, some IT companies stopped outsourcing because we can't get the same quality, so the market is correcting itself again. If a Mexican illegal is making $1 an hour at a maquilladora on the border, that's the MARKET RATE of the job. I think we would eliminate unemployment overnight if we got rid of the minimum wage. Poverty is unfair but its NOT a human injustice that should be addressed by the government. In all societies, there will always be a bell curve of non-motivated under-acheivers at one end and a natural aristocracy of technical and financial elite at the other. We can't be a nation entirely of yeoman as some anti-federalists envisioned.

An economy of the future is almost impossible to contemplate. Look at how many people make a living through ebay. Look at how many non-existent weapons and equipment are sold for the Everquest online game in exchange for real cash. Holding a job is NOT the only way to get an income.

If and when bandidos like the Zetas start operating in the US, the government won't have the political will to "solve" the problem.

Move down there if you are prepared to patrol your property with rifles, night vision and body armor. If you are dark skinned hispanic, you may have a tough choice whether to back the US or Mexico. If you are black, you will have better luck surviving in a black suburb in the southeast, away from the gang-controlled inner cities. If you are white, you will have better luck in the Pacific Northwest or Rockie Mountain States. I can't say there's a huge job market out there, but that depends on your own imagination and ingenuity. Don't worry about politics or gun laws. When the crap hits the fan, none of the gun laws will stop a flood of machine guns, rocker launchers, mortars and artillery batteries getting into the hands of community self-defense forces. Those liberals in urban New England and California who get ethnically cleansed by the Farrakhans get what they deserve. The inner cities get taken over by the Leftists, but the cities need electricity, water and food supplied by facilities outside of their limits. Last time I checked, not many farmers, truck drivers or highway patrolman listen to gangsta rap or feminist poetry. The center of economic power shifts to whoever controls agriculture and transportation since inner city liberals don't have any of value that they can trade for food, they starve. Our police and military have a very simple choice: Back the government who will pay them in useless scrip or back the farmers who will feed them for "handling" marauders and desperate refugees. Conservatives will survive because we have the military potential (NRA) and political will to do everything in our power to come out on top. As a matter of principle, as my namesake, I will remain in NYC and make my stand, for better or for worse. I suggest wherever you move to, get demographic info, area history, crime rates, gun laws, major roads, utilities facilities, law enforcement organization, etc. Personally, I'd rather live amongst a community of gainfully employed individuals as they have a certain awareness, capable of some analytic thought and have preparedness mindset. A place with a lot of welfare leeches simply invites looting if order breaks down. The point is to assess the military potential of those that may be on your side and those that will definitely gunning for your valuables.

Religion may be metaphysically incompatible with Objectivism, but one can still recognize the social utility of religion, in its power to consolidate ideology and value systems for society. Individualism is an ideal, but not always the best practical choice. If you are a Hutu in Rwanda, surrounded by Tutsi rebels, your most rational act of self-intrest is to join whatever armed group your fellow tribesmen have formed to defend yourself from the initiation of force. Sometimes it is in one's best SELF-INTEREST to belong to an organized religion whether you believe in its values or not. Even Freidrich "God is Dead" Nietzche in "The Will to Power" has said nihilism can occur because of the collapse of religion if people don't find something else to believe in.

What if in conflict, one recognizes that one does not have the courage to commit an act involving grave risk and needs a psychological boost to override nature's fight-or-flight hardwiring? Maybe I need to believe in a god because I've found no other way to surmount a psychological barrier. Don't underestimate the memetic design and calculation of religion in philosophy. People are social animals and has it ever occured to anyone that we WANT to belong to a group? If aetheists feel like social pariahs surrouned by Christians, then that's their f**kin' problem. They have a right to their beliefs, but they don't have a right to being accepted by anyone else. Ayn Rand would expect Objectivists to be ruggedly individualistic enough to march to their own beat. Not everyone is a Hollywood screenwriter with a apartment on the Upper West Side with the luxury of deep metaphysical contemplation.

Rand's ethical judgement is very similiar to Aristole's, where individual happiness is a subjective judgement. What if an individual chooses to associate himself with a community of like-minded believers without infringing upon the rights of others? Last time I checked, none of the Catholics on my block have plotted to exterminate me because of my non-belief and in fact, they are fellow NRA members defending my right to keep my gun in case anyone tried to impose their will on me.

Most world religions have undergone reformations that allow them to interact relatively peacefully in free pluralist societies. I can live with that. So what if some beliefs are based on flawed supernatural premises? They are not reflected in the laws of the Constitution and have no force of law upon me. No Christian has forced me at gunpoint to believe in Christ.

Maybe one day a transhumanist revolution will liberate our minds from our bodies we'll be free of the physical and spiritual needs of corporeality, but until that day comes, we need to accept the political/religious/cultural situation.

As long as there continue to be single parent, or dual worker parent families, I can't see this generation having the same values as someone raised 50 years ago.

Not too long ago, here in NYC, parents of inner-city schools were asked to vote on whether to allow Edison Schools, a private voucher-based education corp to set up shop. I think the vote was like 70% against, after union teachers picketed the school.

Why should we even bother trying to improve public education? The parents had their one chance and they blew it.

In my neighborhood, there are at least 5 different SAT prep schools run by chinese entrepeneurs. Asian kids barely 7 or 8 are sent there AFTER their compulsory public indoctrination/gang initiation for a real education at the end of the day.

But fellow Freepers, please don't tell liberals about these schools; they're liable to start regulating and quotatizing them. I really do respect hard-working teachers, but their unions, for lack of a better term, need to be blown the f**k up. A full voucher system where corporal punishment is used to instill proper behavior is the only hope for de-ghettotizing and restoring order. Those problem kids who slip through the cracks would simply be "solved" the first time they break into private property and get a quick education on gunshot wound ballistics and hydrostatic shock.
