Should N.C. homeschoolers report to public school authorities? They will soon, under a plan announced today to a joint appropriations committee – if the committee approves. Secretary of Administration Gwynn Swinson today presented Governor Easley's latest budget proposal, which would move the Division of Non-Public Education (DNPE) under the authority of the Department of Public Instruction (DPI), ending twenty-five years of independence for non-public education in North Carolina. Secretary Swinson explained this as a cost saving benefit and a way to "deal with the proliferation of homeschoolers" in the state. Some committee members expressed interest in increasing oversight of homeschoolers.

The latest North Carolina Driver's Handbook has taken a strange turn. At the end of the book are sample test questions. Every single one deals with aspects of law enforcement procedure rather than driving rules. All of the questions concern how you can lose your license or get points or other such things. The big yawn coming from Wall Street Today is indicative of a market that remains overvalued. There should be a big relief bounce today if the market was healthy, but it is not happening. The stock market, even after the declines this year, has serious technical overvaluation to deal with. Reality is sinking in today while investors look for a safe place to put their money. One good thing today is that the dollar index was up a bit.
