(Note: This previously unpublished article was written on September 14, 2001, from the office of Fr. John A. Perricone at St. Agnes Rectory in Manhattan, some two miles away from Ground Zero. Much of the horror of that day has faded. Even more so, its urgent lessons. Much of America seems to have moved on to even greater follies.) I sit here writing this piece coughing on the fumes of hell. Though I sit some one hundred blocks from ground zero of Manhattan Island, the winds shift and billows of that smoke of death stretch all the way to my...

Let’s hope that “Goliath” comes for the Muslim Brotherhood infiltrators and Useful Idiots in the Department of Homeland Security, the FBI, and elsewhere in the government. Donald Trump “Muslim Brotherhood: Trump victory a ‘disaster,’” Middle East Monitor, November 9, 2016 (thanks to Lookmann): Donald Trump’s victory in the US elections is a “disaster” for the Arab and Muslim world, a Muslim Brotherhood spokesperson said today. The Battle of Lepanto, which saved Christian Europe from armed Moslem domination in the form of the Ottoman Turks. Don Juan of Austria, leading the Holy League against the Turks, was outnumbered: 300 Turkish galleys against 200 of the Holy League. Don Juan instructed all of his men to pray the Rosary prior to the engagement: the Turkish forces were utterly destroyed. Pope St. Pius V believed that this important victory was secured by the intercession of the Blessed Virgin. Thus, today is celebrated as the Feast of Our Lady of Victory and/or the Feast of Our Lady of the...

Here is the forgotten, unpublicized, little-regarded mission by the Heisman Trust — the group that is responsible for the Heisman Trophy: “The Heisman Memorial Trophy annually recognizes the outstanding college football player whose performance best exhibits the pursuit of excellence with integrity. Winners epitomize great ability combined with diligence, perseverance, and hard work.” Excellence with integrity. Who would have thought? (more at link)

Since the departure of Bob Beckel from Fox News Channel's "The Five," there have been a number of Liberal guest hosts sitting in his chair. Some are quite good, some are terrible. But only one makes me almost wish for Beckel's return: Geraldo Rivera. Okay, Juan Willliams sometimes gets me close, but he is a decent and likable "useful idiot" of the Left. When he is not boorishly shouting over those panelists who disagree with him, he is adamantly defending Hillary!'s email scandal as inconsequential. This, coming from the moron who disclosed US troop locations and future movements on a...

CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. — MV-22 Ospreys replaced the Marines’ last squadron of CH-46E helicopters Thursday, officially ending the Sea Knight’s 50-year run as the troop and supply transport workhorse of the Corps. Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron 164 received the first Sea Knights assigned to the West Coast in early 1965 and introduced the medium-lift helicopter to combat in Vietnam in 1966. Parts of the squadron also flew missions in the evacuation of Saigon, making it the first in and last out of the Southeast Asian country. More than 600 CH-46s, affectionately known as “Battle Phrogs,” were produced over the years,...
  • My review of "American Sniper"

We saw "American Sniper" last night. My wife and I went with a group of about a dozen other military parents (Navy, Marine Corps, Army). This is not a typical "war movie" in that it explores one man's journey from civilian life into the military community into war (four tours in Iraq) and then explores his difficult re-entry into civilian life. So, in a way, the movie is about the family and community of the as much as it is about Chris Kyle. There are aspects of the movie that some will dismiss as trite or jingoistic: Kyle's father instructing...

Duty, Honor, Country: Those three hallowed words reverently dictate what you ought to be, what you can be, what you will be. They are your rallying points: to build courage when courage seems to fail; to regain faith when there seems to be little cause for faith; to create hope when hope becomes forlorn. Unhappily, I possess neither that eloquence of diction, that poetry of imagination, nor that brilliance of metaphor to tell you all that they mean. The unbelievers will say they are but words, but a slogan, but a flamboyant phrase. Every pedant, every demagogue, every cynic, every...

All of us have learned from sad experience by doing something we were warned by somebody older and wiser not to do. What's your regret? I'll start.... When I turned 18 (then the legal drinking age), my father said to me, "Son, NEVER get drunk on wine." About 2 years later, I learned how very right he was! I have since passed the same wise advice to my son.

There are many beautiful prayers in the Catholic Faith. Please share your favorite(s) with us. Here are two that I particularly like. The Anima Christi - this is a particularly good prayer for the period of meditation after reception of the Eucharist. Anima Christi (attrib. St. Ignatius of Loyola) Anima Christi, sanctifica me. Corpus Christi, salva me. Sanguis Christi, inebria me. Aqua lateris Christi, lava me. Passio Christi, conforta me. O bone Jesu, exaudi me. Intra tua vulnera absconde me. Kain Colter compares NU football training to Navy SEALs The Northwestern football players hearing with the National Labor Relations Board in an attempt to unionize continued on Tuesday and former Kain Colter began his testimony. While Colter’s testimony initially appeared to bolster the argument of the players, a comparison made between the Northwestern football team and Navy SEALs readying for operations in Iraq will likely draw backlash. When asked by petitioning council about the preparation for a college football game, Colter likened it to military personnel preparing for operation in Iraq. Though he did go on to explain that Northwestern’s...
