NEW YORK (Reuters) - International Business Machines Corp. on Wednesday said it is working with the University of Pennsylvania on a large computer that will store mammogram data, helping doctors screen for breast cancer and find geographic clusters of people with the disease. Initially, the computer will be linked with four university hospitals, enabling the hospitals to store digital versions of mammograms and use analytical tools that can help diagnose and identify cancer cell clusters in the population, IBM said. I am pleased--irrationally exuberant, in fact--to announce the birth of my son today. Jacob David Sterner was born by caesarean section at 1:41 PM EST today at Riddle Memorial Hospital in Media, PA. He weighed 6 lbs. 11 oz., and was 19.25 inches long. Jake and Mrs. Physicist came through the process in excellent health. Political activist Don Adams has lost round three in his fight against John P. Morris, the once powerful leader of the Pennsylvania Conference of Teamsters. The state Superior Court last week rejected Adams' latest attempt to obtain a private criminal complaint charging Morris with assault. Adams says Morris instigated fellow Teamsters to beat him and his sister, Teri, outside City Hall while they were protesting a visit by President Clinton on Oct. 2, 1998. There was a Bush/Cheney rally in Philadelphia today sponsored by a group called Concerned Republican Citzens. Our own "Scarpetta" was apparently the main organizing force behind it; props to her for a job well done! The Rally started at 1:00 pm in Welcome Park on 2nd St. in Olde City Philadelphia. It was an unqualified success, with a peak attendance of around 100 people. The Philadelphia Chapter of FreeRepublic was well-represented, with 19 registered Freepers and many more lurkers besides. There was a rally today on the steps of the Delaware County Courthouse in Media, PA in support of PRESIDENT ELECT GEORGE W. BUSH. It was sponsored by a group called The Daughters of Liberty. The rally was about as well-attended as the rally yesterday in West Chester, with about 250-300 people attending. That's not such a bad figure, considering that the weather was brilliant yesterday, but gloomy and frigid today. I just got back from the Bush/Cheney rally in West Chester, PA. I estimate that there were 250-300 people there. Talk show host Dom Giordano spoke there, along with Congressmen Weldon and Pitts. Several local politicians also spoke. Abner & her husband were the only other Freepers I saw there. They made and distributed 20 or so Sore/Loserman signs. We know that the hand recounts are intrinsically inaccurate, particularly if they are counting "tri-chads". Tri-chads (chads where one corner is detached, and three corners are intact) can occur either spontaneously, as the result of careless handling, or through fraud. One or two may even reflect voter intent. Let's assume that there is no fraud. (You laugh, but bear with me.) Last week, Don Adams told Common Pleas Court Judge Sheldon C. Jelin about the beating he absorbed two years earlier by an angry union mob. "I'm very fortunate to be alive today, your honor," Adams said at an Oct. 24 court hearing. Adams was in court to see three of the people involved in the beating sentenced for their actions. I just got off the phone with Teri Adams. The three teamsters who pled guilty last month for beating Don and Teri Adams were sentenced last week (10/25). Judge Sheldon Jelin sentenced Norma Bottomer to one year of probation, while Mark Hopkins and Charlie Davis were each sentenced to two years of probation. They are the third, fourth and fifth Teamsters to be sentenced to probation as a result of the Adams beatings. Kevin McNulty and Marc Nardone pled guilty and received probation in summer, 1999. Bill Clinton spent his 25th wedding anniversary (sans helpmeet) in Philadelphia, attending two fundraisers for Lord Only Knows Whom. I just heard this morning on the radio that Bill Clinton will be in Philadelphia today. A quick call to the Civil Affairs Unit of the Philadelphia Police Department confirmed that he will be appearing at two locations: the Wyndham hotel and Memorial Hall in Fairmount Park.
