DECLARATION OF KEVIN L. STERNER, Ph.D.   I, Kevin L. Sterner, hereby declare as follows: I am employed as a physicist and staff scientist of the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Pennsylvania. On October 2, 1998, I left my office at the university at approximately 4:00 PM and traveled to Dilworth Plaza in downtown Philadelphia, arriving at approximately 4:20 PM. I traveled alone downtown with the intention of peacefully protesting against former President William J. Clinton, who was visiting Philadelphia for a political fundraising event. In order to protest peacefully against then-President Clinton, I constructed a ...

NEW YORK (Reuters) - International Business Machines Corp. on Wednesday said it is working with the University of Pennsylvania on a large computer that will store mammogram data, helping doctors screen for breast cancer and find geographic clusters of people with the disease. Initially, the computer will be linked with four university hospitals, enabling the hospitals to store digital versions of mammograms and use analytical tools that can help diagnose and identify cancer cell clusters in the population, IBM said. Once the computer is in place six to eight months from now, it could be used to link many more ...

Mrs. Physicist, with my invaluable assistance | November 16, 2001 | self
I am pleased--irrationally exuberant, in fact--to announce the birth of my son today. Jacob David Sterner was born by caesarean section at 1:41 PM EST today at Riddle Memorial Hospital in Media, PA. He weighed 6 lbs. 11 oz., and was 19.25 inches long. Jake and Mrs. Physicist came through the process in excellent health. The surgery was performed by Dr. Mark Finnegan, who delivered our daughters Emily and Molly, also at Riddle, in 1995 and 1997, respectively. Here is a bigger picture of Jake. Here I am holding my boy. To take this post into the stratosphere of vanity, ...

Name that telescope and win a prize Space Shorts: NASA solicits suggestions for SIRTF’s new title Sept. 3 —  NASA is asking Earthlings to find a friendly name for a new space-based observatory that will allow scientists to search for new planets at the farthest reaches of the universe. The observatory, due to be launched in the summer of 2002, is currently called the Space Infrared Telescope Facility, or SIRTF. “WE ARE HOPING to tap the creativity of the public to find a name suitable for this important mission that will help enrich our knowledge of the universe,” said Doris ...

Received today via email: Dear friends and colleagues, Pardon the mass mailing, but time is important here. Poul Anderson has left Alta Bates hospital in Berkeley and is in hospice care at the Anderson home in Orinda. His daughter Astrid, his brother John and his niece Janet are flying in today to be with him. When I spoke with Poul the day before yesterday, he was weak but lucid; both Poul and Karen welcome email messages. Their email is trigonier@earthlink.net. Karen has supported Poul with courage and creativity during his month-long stay at Alta Bates. She has prepared meals of ...

Philadelphia Daily News ^ | December 18, 2000 | Dave Racher, Daily News Staff Writer
Political activist Don Adams has lost round three in his fight against John P. Morris, the once powerful leader of the Pennsylvania Conference of Teamsters. The state Superior Court last week rejected Adams' latest attempt to obtain a private criminal complaint charging Morris with assault. Adams says Morris instigated fellow Teamsters to beat him and his sister, Teri, outside City Hall while they were protesting a visit by President Clinton on Oct. 2, 1998. Five Teamsters were prosecuted for the attack. After District Attorney Lynne Abraham refused to approve the complaint against Morris, Adams appealed to Common Pleas Judge Peter ...

    Rally in Philadelphia | 12/2/2000 | self
There was a Bush/Cheney rally in Philadelphia today sponsored by a group called Concerned Republican Citzens. Our own "Scarpetta" was apparently the main organizing force behind it; props to her for a job well done! The Rally started at 1:00 pm in Welcome Park on 2nd St. in Olde City Philadelphia. It was an unqualified success, with a peak attendance of around 100 people. The Philadelphia Chapter of FreeRepublic was well-represented, with 19 registered Freepers and many more lurkers besides. I signed up 20 new people for the FreeRepublic Philadelphia Chapter email list, which now has 140 members. Talk show ...

  • Any Plans for Final Clinton Freep/FR Inaugural Activities?

OK, let's start discussing plans for FR activities at the Bush Inaugural. There had been talk of a final Freep of the Creep, an Official Swearing At, to celebrate the passing of the final moment of the Clinton Administration. There was also talk of having some sort of FR function in D.C. on Inauguration Day. If that isn't in the works, let's put it in the works! I just reserved a room for myself and Mrs. Physicist at Days Inn Crystal City; they still have rooms available. The rate is $134.00 ($117.00 for NRA members and $89.00 for AAA members). ...

(I just distributed this on the FR Philadelphia email list.) Gentle Activists, There is apparently going to be a rally in support of PRESIDENT ELECT BUSH on Friday, 11/24 at 12:00 noon, hosted by talk show host Dom Giordano. The problem is that there is no firm decision as to the location. The tentative locations are Valley Forge Park near King of Prussia, PA and City Hall in Philadelphia. I hope that Dom Giordano will make a final choice in time for me to send out an announcement tomorrow. In any case, try to listen to his radio show tomorrow, ...

There was a rally today on the steps of the Delaware County Courthouse in Media, PA in support of PRESIDENT ELECT GEORGE W. BUSH. It was sponsored by a group called The Daughters of Liberty. The rally was about as well-attended as the rally yesterday in West Chester, with about 250-300 people attending. That's not such a bad figure, considering that the weather was brilliant yesterday, but gloomy and frigid today. Identified Freepers included myself (with family), abner & her husband Barry, GregoryFul, and Marylander (and her little dog, too!). Abner brought along 30 new Sore/Loserman signs; she also had ...

I just got back from the Bush/Cheney rally in West Chester, PA. I estimate that there were 250-300 people there. Talk show host Dom Giordano spoke there, along with Congressmen Weldon and Pitts. Several local politicians also spoke. Abner & her husband were the only other Freepers I saw there. They made and distributed 20 or so Sore/Loserman signs. (Dom Giordano gave FreeRepublic a nice plug about that.) Abner carried a sign that said "Recount Gore's Chinese Cash". Some other people brought their own Sore/Loserman signs (clearly Registered's design). I carried my "CLINTON: CHINAGATE TRAITOR" sign, but modified it by ...
  • Question: Have the hand recounts found any votes for Nader or Buchanan?

    11/16/2000 8:13:41 AM PST · by Physicist · 9+ views
    curiosity | 11/16/2000 | self
We know that the hand recounts are intrinsically inaccurate, particularly if they are counting "tri-chads". Tri-chads (chads where one corner is detached, and three corners are intact) can occur either spontaneously, as the result of careless handling, or through fraud. One or two may even reflect voter intent. Let's assume that there is no fraud. (You laugh, but bear with me.) If all tri-chads are the result of voter intent, then a predictable percentage of them will go to Nader and Buchanan, in proportion to the vote that they received according to the machine count. Any fraction of tri-chads that ...
  • 3 Teamsters are Sentenced for Roughing Up Protester

Last week, Don Adams told Common Pleas Court Judge Sheldon C. Jelin about the beating he absorbed two years earlier by an angry union mob. "I'm very fortunate to be alive today, your honor," Adams said at an Oct. 24 court hearing. Adams was in court to see three of the people involved in the beating sentenced for their actions. Mark Hopkins, Charlie Davis and Norma Bottomer--all members of the West Mayfair-based Teamsters Union Local 115--pleaded guilty on Sept. 12. Assistant District Attorney Joel Rosen asked Jelin to sentence Hopkins, 31, and Davis, 28, to house arrest, community service and ...

I just got off the phone with Teri Adams. The three teamsters who pled guilty last month for beating Don and Teri Adams were sentenced last week (10/25). Judge Sheldon Jelin sentenced Norma Bottomer to one year of probation, while Mark Hopkins and Charlie Davis were each sentenced to two years of probation. They are the third, fourth and fifth Teamsters to be sentenced to probation as a result of the Adams beatings. Kevin McNulty and Marc Nardone pled guilty and received probation in summer, 1999. The charges stemmed from an incident on October 2, 1998 where members of Teamsters ...

Bill Clinton spent his 25th wedding anniversary (sans helpmeet) in Philadelphia, attending two fundraisers for Lord Only Knows Whom. The first fundraiser was held downtown at the Wyndham Hotel; I freeped him there. Today's protest was more entertaining than usual. I shared the protest area with about twelve disabled activists from a group called ADAPT (I promised I'd plug their website), three Green party promoters, and about 75 members of the PFT (Philadelphia Federation of Teachers), who were demonstrating against Mayor John Street for a new contract. Out of that whole boisterous crew, I was the only person who was ...

I just heard this morning on the radio that Bill Clinton will be in Philadelphia today. A quick call to the Civil Affairs Unit of the Philadelphia Police Department confirmed that he will be appearing at two locations: the Wyndham hotel and Memorial Hall in Fairmount Park. The protest area at the Wyndham hotel will be on the south side of Race Street in the 1500 block. It will open between 3 and 3:30; I think he is scheduled to appear at 3:30 or 4:00. After that, he will appear at Memorial Hall (time unknown at this time). There will ...
