December 20, 2009 Washington, D.C. - U.S. Senator Olympia J. Snowe (R-Maine) released the following statement today on the status of the health reform legislation currently pending before the United States Senate: “Having been fully immersed in this issue for this entire year and as the only Republican to vote for health reform in the Finance Committee, I deeply regret that I cannot support the pending Senate legislation as it currently stands, given my continued concerns with the measure and an artificial and arbitrary deadline of completing the bill before Christmas that is shortchanging the process on this monumental and...

Laura Ingraham, Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity and the Conservative Talk Radio Party (CTRP) took a meaningless beauty contest of fewer than 10,000 people in Maine and spun it up nicely on Monday to assure listeners across the country that Maine was proof positive the other McCain surge wasn't working. To be fair, Romney trounced McCain in the weekend caucuses. From various reports, it was pretty clear that the Romney people had a plan and executed that plan flawlessly. The McCain people, on the other hand, had little or no organization -- and it showed. more..

Snowe (R-ME) today announced that she will vote to confirm the nomination of Judge Samuel Alito to be the next Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court. New Orleans murder rate on the rise again Homicide rate nowhere near ’94 peak but still 10 times national average The Associated Press Updated: 7:20 p.m. ET Aug. 18, 2005 NEW ORLEANS - Last year, university researchers conducted an experiment in which police fired 700 blank rounds in a New Orleans neighborhood in a single afternoon. No one called to report the gunfire. New Orleans residents are reluctant to come forward as witnesses, fearing retaliation. And experts say that is one of several reasons homicides are on the rise in the Big Easy at a time when other cities are...

Tuesday,September 28,2004 Judge rules to keep Nader on ballot AUGUSTA (AP) - Maine Democrats have lost a bid to keep independent presidential candidate Ralph Nader's name off the November ballot. A Maine Superior Court judge ruled that state election officials followed legal procedure in allowing the consumer activist's name to go on the ballot. In his ruling, Justice S. Kirk Studstrup rejected a challenge by Maine Democratic Party Chairwoman Dorothy Melanson, who said petitions included the wrong name for a Nader elector and party identification forms weren't on the petitions. Studstrup said state election officials followed proper procedure and did...

MDs sell signatures: Illegal, but lucrative A handful of Canadian doctors are routinely breaking the law by authorizing prescriptions for Americans buying through Internet pharmacies. The practice of co-signing prescriptions for American patients is big business. Without those co-signing Canadian doctors, Canada's Internet pharmacies could not exist. But this big Canadian business is illegal. MONTREAL - Few medical practices are more secretive: A handful of doctors across Canada co-sign millions of prescriptions each year for American patients they never meet, earning lucrative fees for their efforts. The practice is big business. Without those co-signing Canadian doctors, Canada's Internet pharmacies could...

The Charles De Gaulle headed back to France after completing exercises in the Eastern Med. It was speculated that it would be part of the NATO build up in the Persian Gulf but it will berthed in Toulon harbor (site of the scuttling of the French fleet in WWII) when hostilities will likely commence. The French had run out of cheese but had plenty of whine on board. The ship is seen below off of Tripoli:Here

Two years ago Mr. Burke ran for this House seat as a Democrat.VEAZIE — A Holden man and State House hopeful was arrested this week after Veazie authorities alleged that he was intoxicated when he arrived at the town office to file nomination papers. John Burke II, 46, was charged with operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of intoxicants, and with violation of conditions of release. An unsuccessful candidate two years ago for House District 116, which comprises Bradley, Eddington, Holden, Veazie and part of Brewer, Burke was already out on bail Thursday when Veazie police arrested him....

LEWISTON State seeks child support from man who is not father By Bonnie Washuk Staff Writer Email this story Printer friendly version Geoffrey Fisher is in a bureaucratic nightmare. In July the state took his driver’s license, saying he owed more than $10,000 in child support. Fisher had a relationship four years ago with a woman who told him he was the father of her child. “I said, ‘OK. I’m not going to deny my child,’” Fisher said. But recent paternity tests ordered by the Maine Department of Human Services show Fisher is not the father. He wants his ...

MAKE PIE, NOT WAR: A Commentary on the Preponderance of Flags By Catherine Blount A friend visiting recently from England asked me to explain the preponderance of flags. She found it disturbingly odd. "It's the kind of thing one does when under siege in a foreign country, not in one's own," she said. (She travels a lot.) Trying to formulate a response to why Americans would behave at home as though they were foreigners slammed me smack into a wall. My mind, in stunned retreat, took a less daunting turn to mulling over why Wal-Mart flags were getting all the ...

The Scarborough Red Storm By Elizabeth Reilly Staff Writer A decision was due last night (Jan. 18) on whether the Scarborough Board of Education wants to name the high school’s mascot “Red Storm.” Red Storm is the second name considered to replace the allegedly offensive current mascot name “Redskins.” Whether the board will decide to approve the name was unclear as of press-time, Wednesday, but the name was considered an action item so a final decision should have been made on Thursday night. The search for a new mascot name has been ongoing since Election Day, 2000, when Scarborough ...

I believe that the real man will stand up when John Ashcroft testifies before the Senate Judiciary Committee at his confirmation hearings beginning today. My belief is based on my 36-year friendship with John. When he "stands up" and tells senators and the nation what he believes, those who are willing to listen will hear a man who is remarkably different from the man being caricatured in the media by his opponents. The real John Ashcroft and I met at the University of Chicago Law School. Among other activities, we attended Sunday morning worship services at Rockefeller Chapel on ...

Those people concerned about the fairness of the Florida presidential recount could be excused for being less than reassured by the news that Vice President Al Gore had called in Portland lawyer Anthony Buxton to help sort out the legal mess. Mainers may recall that Buxton, a former chair of the state Democratic Party, was part of the team of attorneys who almost succeeded in overturning the results of a 1999 Portland City Council election. In that race, Councilor Jack Dawson appeared to have won re-election by a margin of just 24 votes over challenger Ethan Strimling. But Strimling's legal ...
