A top official at the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research, Yaba, Lagos, has said that one of the people who helped the 40-year-old Liberian, Patrick Sawyer, on the Monrovia-Lome and Lome-Lagos flight may have been infected with the virus. The reliable source, who is also on the team of experts monitoring the testing and surveillance of persons who have had contact with the late Liberian victim in Lagos, told our correspondent on Wednesday, that although they had yet to confirm, the person was showing feverish symptoms similar to that of Ebola virus.

I just sent the following to someone involved with animal rescue, and wanted to share with Freepers. It's been a very hard day here : I found out last night my family has to move overseas in the next 5 days because of my husband's job. I have a highly intelligent, well trained, well behaved, 4 year old German Shepherd. If I can't find a foster or permanent home, he will have to be euthanized. I've worked with him extensively. He's obedient and knows many commands, but he's not been able to be socialized to other people or animals. From...

I tried to make a couple online purchases today and had my credit card denied. Living in a dead zone, I had to drive down the road and sit in a hot car to call Chase Bank. I was asked if yesterday I made a payment to "Friends of Herman Cain." I said,"yes." Customer service told me that is what triggered the hold, but could give no explanation why. It just triggered a hold alert despite my numerous online purchases. I'm furious. I told her it smacked of dirty politics. All she could say was, "sorry." I think this needs...

I think we need to organize a Free Republic baby shower for Bristol Palin. I can barely organize a child's birthday party, so I'm hoping other Freepers will step up to the plate. I think to start, we need- date, time, place, and theme. I know there are Freepers here that can organize this so we can show our support.

Please pray for my husband. We've been trying to start a business in a foreign country. It has not gotten off the ground yet. My husband in the meantime has tried to get jobs, and waited for jobs he was told were his, only to never have them materialize. In the meantime, we've been barely getting by, and now have to rely on the goodness of relatives to get us back to the US. It's been totally devestating to my husband. He is emotionally drained, and was near suicide the other night. He needs prayer to help keep him going...

Hospitals have been placed on high alert over a mystery disease that has killed three people. Two died within an hour of collapsing. Health authorities said last night that they were startled at the sudden deaths of two women and a man in Dunedin and were "very concerned" that the disease killed so quickly. They issued a nationwide alert, mostly to warn hospitals to watch out for symptoms but also to find out whether the disease had spread beyond Dunedin. At a press conference last night, they ruled out Sars as a cause but said they had no idea what...

I'd like prayers for my 17 year old daughter. She lives with her father in the US, and I'm in NZ, so I can't do much but pray. She was in a minor auto accident on New Years Eve, she had been drinking, but wasn't the driver. An hour after she called and told me, I started miscarrying at 7 weeks. Since then, she's become very depressed and alludes to suicide. She's been put on an anti-depressant and is getting counseling. The worst of it is that she's suddenly decided she doesn't believe in God anymore. I was devestated to...
  • Opposition blame Clark for fate of free trade deal

The United States rejection of a free trade deal with New Zealand is devastating for New Zealand and Prime Minister Helen Clark must take responsibility, opposition parties say. US Trade Representative Robert Zoellick yesterday dashed hopes of a free trade agreement, citing too many objections from US farmers. "A lot of their agricultural exports are ones that are very sensitive here," Mr Zoellick told the US House of Representatives Agriculture Committee, referring specifically to lamb and dairy products. Mr Zoellick said the US was also disappointed with recent actions by New Zealand. "There's been some things done recently that would...

Tired and worried, Tom Buckley sat down at his hospital computer in Hong Kong and began to type warnings that would shock and inspire his fellow doctors around the world. "Dear All," the New Zealand-born doctor wrote in an email to about 1500 intensive care specialists from Toronto to Auckland. "We seem to be close to or are the centre of this form of atypical pneumonia ... " Over the next three weeks Dr Buckley, 48, the acting head of intensive care at Hong Kong's Prince of Wales Hospital, wrote a series of electronic bulletins warning his colleagues. "I was...
