You have already gotten more good advice than I received when my retirement started after 37 years.....in 2007. My only add to all the rest would be to find a financial manger with a good track record. Turns out that my luckiest move was to sign on with a local firm in Loveland, Colorado. My advisor started in the business to save his parents in their retirement starting year and has been at it about 30 years now with many very happy clients. Don’t think I can list his id / company here but I’ll send you a personal if you would like.

Do some reading up on Loveland, Colorado. We have lately had four seasons two or three times..... The elevation is fine and quite near the really high hills and mountains. Very Veteran friendly and conservative enough that there aren’t many noisy liberals around to made your head hurt.
    Well come on in !

Hey Brother, I just saw that one response recommended you get this all in writing for your family’s benefit. I agree and add to that response that you are in fact doing that here and only need to point a thoughtful, trusted family member to this site.
Even more valuable to all of us is the service of the veterans all over the country who will come to you and offer to create a video of your story with you voice and image to be preserved and shared with thousand of your fellow Brothers and Americans who desire to have the story shared. I offer you the service of locating such a person who will contact you. (No cost) I have shared your writing with one of my grandsons who seems to have a keen interest in knowing what it means to be in a war situation. He is 16 now and very thoughtful in his inquiries. If I can do anything for you please reach out.

You did good Marine, really good. I salute you every time I meet up with any PH Marine brother or other service veteran showing PH on their cover or even license plates. I was on the flightline in Danang in 67 & 68 pumping fuel and patching up ground fire holes in silver Marine C-130s. I stood very near the many stretchers with KIA Marines in body bags as they waited for Grave Registration to arrive to get them ready for their trip home. As an electrician, I wasn’t regular air crew so my Viet Nam was a basically the tarmac where our C-130s taxied in from runs to supply ordinance ( and beer) and retrieve KIA from combat bases in I Corps. I always knew there were “real” Marines out there hauling the heavy load. Thank you, Brother. I am close with about 150 veterans from all theaters and also with 50 Marine Corps League brothers and Corpsmen here in Loveland, Colorado. Wish we had you with our units here, hope we’ll be in the same unit in our final duty station. Robin - Sgt USMC

    Sir Lazamataz,
I am a frequent FR reader. Your words have hit a chord in my heart and I am motivated to venture my first Reply on this system. Your thoughts are extreme and yet not at all untrue or exaggerated. The clarity of your thinking is a reality alarm bell. You may find you are called on to lead the thoughts of our “leaders” very soon. If the infrastructure of this internet is allowed to continue, I will likely be one who will remember where I heard clarity and true depiction of the “revolting development” the people of this country have acquiesced into existence by being sheep herded into the slaughter pens. Hope we meet.
Thank you for the slap in face and the fist in my gut !

Thank you for thinking of all the rest of us FR readers who will ultimately pass this way. I have adopted your list and used it to improve on work I had done previously. Your method brings the idea pulling all the important information into a single document. Whenever I have done this (critical personal data in one basket) I have taken great care to only allow my hard copy to be locked in a bank safe deposit box of the family member I gave it to. In the case of soft documents I have found that my word processor permits me to “Save as PDF” with the added security of a password. Use a password the recipient will not need to write down.

Another very effective piece of weaponry was the US Army’s anti-aircraft “quad forty” team fed artillery. I am aquanted with Captain Robert Barndt ( Barney ) who commanded a unit of these from the campaign in North Africa, to Sicily and then on to the Rhine crossing. Thier primary mission was air defense of our infantry of course, but is non-flyable weather and in other situations, Barney’s crews learned that the forty’s four automated firepower could be very devastating to objects and personnel on the ground. Captured German soldiers made comments to the effect that the we had “automatic artillery”.

    Sir,
I wanted to say how much I appreciate your fine work to keep the records of our “Greatest Generation” alive. I have a close association with 80 to 90 military Veterans who range from WW2 to current day service. Today your rendering of the March 11, 1945 events included the kamikaze attack at Ulithi atoll on the USS Randolph. One of my veterans breakfast club guys is a USS Randolph plank holder who was aboard the ship that day in 1945. The diary account you have in the Free Republic today matches very closely the accounts that my “shipmate”, Virg Horton, has related to me. I will be sharing your article with him. He is now 95 years old and has lost most of his vision and hearing. When he returned from the war, entered studies to become a minister and indeed served for 60 years as a pastor of numerous churches in Colorado where he now resides in Loveland.
