  • Gun Control Advocate Rachel Maddow Says “Shooting is Fun”

MSNBC anchor Rachel Maddow, an admitted gun control advocate, shocked her fellow liberals this week when she told CBS News’ Rita Braver that she thinks “shooting is fun.” Braver accompanied Maddow to a gun range, where she watched Maddow shoot a few rounds. Maddow: This is a beautiful gun. Braver: So maybe you wouldn’t expect the woman wielding the Colt .45 pistol or the AR-15 rifle to be unabashedly left-leaning Rachel Maddow. Maddow: Like, I’m a real liberal, even on, like, gun safety and gun control issues. That said, I think that shooting is fun, and I think that shooting...

Men are more likely to guess the endings of complex TV crime dramas because women are distracted by the emotion of the story, claims a leading psychologist. Dr David Lewis has said that men remain detached while watching detective dramas such as ITV’s The Secret and BBC1’s Undercover and pick up on hints about the ending that women miss. Dr Lewis said: ‘A man is much more likely to look at that and say “ah ha!” A woman, because she is focused on the emotions, is less likely to spot these things designed to give you a hint. ‘Women tend...

Nick Menza, who played on many of Megadeth’s most successful albums, died after he collapsed on stage during a show. He was 51. Menza was into the third song with his new band Ohm when he collapsed late Saturday night, said Ohm’s manager Steve Bauer. Paramedics couldn’t revive him. The band was playing at The Baked Potato, in Studio City, California. “The group’s bassist texted me last night after it happened,” Bauer told CNN. “We are all still in shock.” Officials haven’t released a cause of death. Alongside Metallica, Slayer and Anthrax, Megadeth makes up metal’s “Big Four.” And for...

Buckling under conservative pressure, the Republican-led House Rules Committee pulled a legislative sleight of hand and stripped a provision from the annual defense policy bill that would have required women between the ages of 18 and 25 to sign up for a military draft. The committee's chairman, Rep. Pete Sessions, R-Texas, said in a statement Tuesday the action was taken to prevent what he called a "reckless policy" from moving forward without closer study of its impact. "I have the utmost respect and deepest appreciation for the young women who bravely volunteer to serve our country, but I am adamantly...

When amateur archaeologist Dennis Fabricius Holm got off work early last Friday and decided to spend a couple of hours searching a little field in Funen with his metal detector, little did he know he was about to make history. Holm stumbled across one of the most extraordinary finds in recent times near the little town of Aunslev when he discovered a crucifix that dates back about 1,100 years – Denmark’s oldest crucifix ever found. It could rewrite Danish history. “It’s a completely sensational find that dates back to the first half of the 900s,” Malene Refshauge Beck, a curator...

California’s Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom and state Democratic lawmakers appear to be on a collision course over a new round of gun control measures. Newsom, claiming lawmakers are dragging their feet, is collecting thousands of signatures in pursuit of a gun initiative ballot measure in November. But lawmakers say they’re planning to address these issues via legislation, and the initiative could hurt what they’re doing. Critics also say the proposed California ballot initiative contains a wide variety of restrictive, costly and unreasonable gun and ammunition control measures. The proposed “Safety for All As of 2016” initiative has 600,000 signatures from...

One of the secrets to rich milk production in lactation has been uncovered by researchers at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute. Their studies have revealed that breast cells develop two nuclei as the breast switches on lactation to nurture the newborn. This change begins to occur in late pregnancy with the generation of vast numbers of cells with two nuclei. The research was led by Professor Jane Visvader, Professor Geoff Lindeman, Dr Anne Rios and Dr Nai Yang Fu, from the institute's ACRF Stem Cells and Cancer Division, and shows that these cells with two nuclei disappear at the...

Evidently taking a signal from Roger Stone, who openly threatened to harass delegates to the GOP convention in Cleveland by publishing their hotel room numbers, Trump supporters in Colorado have been posting the names, addresses, and phone numbers of GOP officials in Colorado. They blame the officials for “rigging” the convention by creating a system last year for awarding delegates that Trump didn’t win. The book's title comes from the term newspapers often used to headline news of local mishaps, listing these gun accidents alongside "drownings, horse tramplings, or steamship explosions," Manseau writes. Guns, Manseau writes, provided editors of these "accident" columns with "the most pathos per column inch," because these incidents often involved intimates. Former Republican presidential nominee Bob Dole is warning GOP voters that putting Texas Sen. Ted Cruz at the top of the ticket would be "cataclysmic" for the party. "If he's the nominee, we're going to have wholesale losses in Congress and state offices and governors and legislatures," Dole, who served in the House and Senate for 35 years and won the Iowa caucuses twice, told the New York Times. "I don't know how often you've heard him say the word 'Republican' - not very often," Dole said, adding, "I don't know how he's going to deal with Congress. Nobody likes...

I am a lifelong sportsman. I grew up in Texas, hunting with my Dad. I'm not sure if I learned how to ride a bike or shoot a gun first, but it was close either way. In addition to creating lifelong memories shooting and hunting with my father, I was educated on gun safety from a very early age. I was taught well, and became a very responsible gun owner and enjoyed sport shooting and hunting into my adult years. But then something started to change. I don't quite know what happened; it just seemed that firearms started becoming faster,...

Sunday’s landslide covered an area of 450,000 square yards, with silt 33 feet deep, authorities said. At least 16 people were hospitalized, including children, the official Xinhua News Agency said. The Amtrak derailment in Philadelphia six months ago killed eight people and injured more than 200, including many people from New Jersey. Jim Gaines, a 48-year-old husband and father of two from Plainsboro, was among those killed in the crash. We should be doing everything we can to ensure our nation's railways are safe. When crashes happen, those who are responsible should be held accountable, so that the people who have been injured or the families of those who have been killed have the opportunity to start rebuilding their lives. Those families are facing a hurdle, though. An obscure law...

Carson and Trump are the least truthful, and Clinton and Sanders the most truthful, according to PolitiFact's analysis The website doesn't check every politician's or candidate's statements, just the ones likely to provoke the most debate. PolitiFact has found that the biggest liar of this election cycle so far is Ben Carson. Not a single one of Carson's 25 statements fact-checked by the site was...

Olafur Eliasson, an Icelandic-Danish artist who lassoed and transported tons of ice from Greenland to Paris for a new climate change-inspired exhibit, bets you haven't. "The truth is the ice is amazing. It's so touching to look at," he told me, standing in front of 12 hunks of Greenland that glittered blue-white in front of the Pantheon in Paris. The ice blocks -- totaling nearly 100 tons, he told me -- are arranged in the shape of a clock. You can see streaks of air and tiny bubbles in the ice. Put your ear to it, as I did at...
