Women should never go to jail, no matter what the crime, be it murder, assault, illicit drug dealing, or anything else. That is the idea of Patricia O’Brien, an associate professor at the Jane Addams College of Social Work at University of Illinois at Chicago. In an article in the Washington Post entitled, “We should stop putting women in jail. For anything,” O’Brien made the case that women should never, under any circumstances, go to prison. O’Brien asked questions such as, “What purpose is served by subjecting the most disempowered, abused and nonviolent women to the perpetually negative environment of...

Ferguson protest leaders released a list of “Rules of Engagement” for protests that they expect will arise when the Grand Jury releases its decision on Darren Wilson. Though the document is called “Rules of Engagement,” it is more akin to a list of demands that the protesters expect the police to follow. Here are some of the most important demands that protesters wrote: 3. Police will give protesters 48 hour advance notice before grand jury decision is announced... 7. Police will wear only the attire minimally required for their safety… 8. Crowd control equipment such as armored vehicles, rubber bullets,...

Jessica Valenti is not happy about the Republican wave election that happened on Tuesday. In fact, she is angry. More than that, she is angry that Republican women have been elected to positions of power because, she writes, Republicans are oppressing women and taking power away from them. Valenti warns, “Record numbers don’t matter if the party is still targeting women’s rights – and if elected women are still throwing their own gender under the bus.” The Republican party, including women who are Republicans, are “anti-woman.” Valenti makes a point to say that the GOP isn’t anti-women’s issues. No, they...

The University of South Florida is scheduled to hold their 12th annual "Tunnel of Oppression" event on campus, to look at the oppression that college students and others are subject to. The event will take place over three nights, starting today. It will be located at Juniper-Poplar Hall on campus, and will run from 6:00pm-10:00pm. "Tunnel of Oppression" aims to show students the oppression they face and hopes that those who go through it will now be able to check their "privilege" that they've taken for granted. There will also be "skits" portraying such oppression and privilege. You can see...

After the astounding victories by Republicans last night, it was only a matter of time until liberals tried to make sense of it all, while still not admitting that they were defeated. Rachel Maddow of MSNBC earned the gold medal for mental gymnastics last night, however, by claiming that Democrats “won the argument” when it came to their policies by… losing the Senate. This sentiment was then echoed on Rachel Maddow’s MSNBC blog, in a post titled, “A Win? Yes. A Mandate? No.” The piece says that, with an overwhelming victory, Republicans will say the election was “an endorsement from...
  • Gillespie Somehow Lost 5657-98 in Precincts Where He Received 9 or Fewer Votes

In an interesting coincidence, in a number of precincts, Republican Ed Gillespie received fewer than 10 votes. Yet, this was not because of a lack of eligible voters. Instead, Gillespie's opponent, Mark Warner, did extremely well in such precincts, drastically out-gaining his opponent. Warner went on to win. Added together, the precincts that Gillespie received 9 or fewer votes adds up to 98. In those same precincts, Warner received an astounding 5,657 votes. Even stranger is the fact that a number of these precincts were near each other and drastically favored Warner. In Newport News City, there were seven precincts...

Despite the New York Time's prediction that Tillis will lose, Pundit Press projects that Thom Tillis will be the next Senator of North Carolina! With 94% of the vote in, Tillis holds a 48,000 vote lead over Hagan. Hagan's problem is that Wake County and Cumberland County, two heavily populated and heavily pro-Hagan counties, are 100% in. Hagan simply cannot make up that margin. On top of that, pro-Tillis counties, such as Cleveland and Davidson are under-reporting thus far. Hagan may gain a few votes, but Tillis should win by 20,000 votes or more.

In at least two polling locations, voting machines are changing votes for Pat Roberts to votes for Greg Orman. The machines were located in Overland Park, Kansas. Both changed votes to Orman, but did not change votes from Orman to Roberts. According to a local report, voters who noticed that their votes were changed were allowed to vote again. The Johnson County Election Office confirmed that they were aware of the issue and were looking into the matter. They said "the voter was allowed to vote on another machine" and the broken machine, which they said was calibrated wrong, was...

The number of people infected with the Ebola virus in Sierra Leone each day is nine times higher than it was two months ago, according to new data. The rate appears to be accelerating particularly in the rural areas surrounding the capital Freetown, the London Times reports. Compared with an average of 1.3 Ebola cases a day at the start of September, there were 12 new cases a day in late October, says the Africa Governance Initiative (AGI), an organization set up by former British Prime Minister Tony Blair.

In what election officials will likely deem a "calibration error," an electronic election computer switched Republican votes for Congress to Democrat votes. The machine is in the 2nd Congressional District of Virginia. In that race, Scott Rigell is facing Suzanne Patrick. However, in a video posted to YouTube today, a voter tries to vote for Rigell twice. Both times, though the voter clearly chooses Rigell, the vote is switched to Patrick: And then the person votes: The person undeniably tries to vote for Rigell, but the machine switches the vote. The person then tries to vote for Rigell again, but...

In an extremely tight race between Scott Brown and Jeanne Shaheen, voters are watching closely for any signs of irregularities that could sway the race one way or another. The governor of New Hampshire, Maggie Hassan, was asked about possible election fraud in the upcoming election. She responded by saying that there was nearly no evidence of any voter fraud in New Hampshire, and that the only case in the last decade was that of a Bush supporter in 2004. Here are her full comments: "Our attorney general has investigated repeated charges of so-called voter fraud and has found only...

In a lecture that supposedly teaches acceptance, McMicken College, part of the University of Cincinnati, held a seminar last week that people who identify themselves as their biological sex are privileged. In other words, if you were born a male and consider yourself a male, you are privileged. If you were born a female and identify yourself as a female, you are privileged. Students from the University of Cincinnati attended, and reported the seminar with approval. Their paper, the News Record, reported: "The program touched on such subjects as cisgender privilege, the concept that individuals who identify as the gender...

An impostor illegally used a New Mexico's man vote three days before the actual person came in to vote. The incident occurred in Rio Arriba County. When the real person came to cast his ballot, he was at first turned away, being told that he had already voted. Only when the real person contested, saying he had not in fact voted, did election officials review their files and compare the signatures they had on record with the one signed by whoever voted three days earlier. The signatures did not match. Why the officials did not check this in the first...

Students at Ramapo College of New Jersey in Mahwah, New Jersey were told this week that they can prevent rape, in part, based on their facial expressions. According to Cory Rosenkranz, coordinator of Substance Abuse & Violence Prevention, women should watch the way they smile, frown, and blink, among other things. Not doing so will result in increased amounts of rape. Rosenkranz told attendees that they should stand in front of a mirror to "practice" their "anti-rape" faces. Brandon Molina, a returning peer facilitator said of the presenter, “She was saying that women need to watch their body language and...

He continues, (emphasis mine) "The urban playground at Union Station isn't drawing people of color and it may be the building's fault." How can an inanimate object be racist? The newly designed Union Station is very popular, says Rinaldi. "If, that is," he warns, "you are white and not paying attention. Or if you think diversity doesn't matter." It's design is an "Architecture of exclusivity," he writes. "The symmetry, arched windows, ornate cornice and stacked,...

One of the critical firewalls for the Romney campaign in 2012 was the (apparently mistaken) belief that Florida voters had turned sour on President Obama. The state’s demographics, including a surging older population seemed to seal the deal. In the RealClearPolitics final poll of polls before the election, Romney led by a small but significant 1.5%. In three of the six last polls, he led by as much as 6%, with one tied and Obama up in two polls by 1% and 2% respectively. However, when the votes started pouring in, a different story was told. There was Karl Rove’s...

A concerned parent posted a picture of their third grader's common core math homework yesterday. Frustrated, they called the homework "ridiculous." Just how ridiculous? Third graders are now being taught how to multply single digit numbers using six steps. Common Core is the over-complication of simple problems. So, how do you solve 7 times 5? You don't just solve it quickly in your head. You don't count by seven five times. Instead, you are supposed to break five into two smaller numbers. It doesn't explain why you don't break seven down, but students are supposed to instantly know that five...

Joe Biden accidentally touted the low and falling labor participation rate on Twitter by touting the decline in long-term unemployment. The Vice President tweeted this graph, which he says shows a sharp decline in unemployment thanks to jobs created by the Obama Administration: Unfortunately for Mr. Biden, this graph looks oddly similar to this graph, which charts the labor participation rate in the United States: There is a strong correlation between the amount of people who have dropped out of the work force because they have been unemployed for so long and the drop in the unemployment rate. Further complicating...

A retired Marine in Maryland is paying the price for honoring a fellow Marine who fell in combat. Heath Silcot was part of the detail escorting Staff Sergeant David Stewart to his final resting place. Riding with other former Marines, Silcot crossed the Bay Bridge. “Someone asked one of the officers about tolls and they said, ‘I can’t imagine them giving us a toll; we’re not gonna stop,’” he said. Maryland Transportation Authority sent Silcot a $9 toll for crossing the bridge. When Silcot disputed the ticket, they gave him another $50 ticket for missing their deadline for him to...

...The Seattle Socialist Party is offering Web Developers employment at $13 an hour, despite pushing for a $20 minimum wage. Now, in a follow up interview, the party insists that it should not be held to its own standards. “We’re practicing what we’re preaching in terms of continuing to fight for the minimum wage,” Doug Barnes, the Freedom Socialist Party’s national secretary, told the Huffington Post. “But we can’t pay a lot more than $13." Apparently completely unaware of his own hypocrisy, Barnes added that he personally supports a $22 an hour minimum wage.

In 2012, Sierra Pacific Industries was ordered to pay $55 million to the United States and transfer 22,500 acres of land to the United States government after the Department of Justice launched a massive lawsuit against the company. The DOJ argued that the company was responsible for a massive fire that destroyed 65,000 acres of land in California. Since the beginning of the case, however, Sierra Pacific has insisted that the fire started elsewhere and that the Department of Justice was being deceitful in their prosecution. Now, new evidence showing an outrageous miscarriage of justice has emerged, including the DOJ's...

Despite some pro-Michael Brown witnesses stating that at no point did Brown and officer Darren Wilson struggle in Wilson's police car, new forensics show that Brown's blood was in the car, on Wilson's gun, and on Wilson's person. According to a witness put forward by the NAACP, the witness “did not see Michael Brown struggling with the police officer inside his car at any point. They did witness the incident from the time it started from the time of the initial stop by the police car.” This is categorically false. The forensics irrefutably show Brown's blood splattered on the car,...
