LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - As plaintiffs sobbed but Cardinal Roger Mahony sat silently in court, the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Los Angeles and victims of clergy sex abuse on Monday finalized their record $660 million settlement. Although Mahony publicly apologized after Mass on Sunday to the 508 plaintiffs, several victims voiced frustration that the leader of the largest U.S. Roman Catholic diocese will not have to testify in court. *snip*

Investigators in two countries are looking into whether the recent slaying of a Lawndale High School teacher in the Philippines could be linked to the killing of his wife's first spouse, who was shot to death in that country 19 years ago. Family members of both slain husbands said the men were planning to divorce Sonia Rios Risken -- known as Sonia Rios Bourdeau during her first marriage -- upon returning to the United States. The wife did not accompany either her first husband, Earl John Bourdeau, or her second husband, Law "Larry" Risken, on their fateful trips, family members...

(3/16/06 - LODI, CA) - When a dump truck backed into Curtis Gokey's car, he decided to sue the city for damages. Only thing is, he was the one driving the dump truck. That minor detail didn't stop Gokey, a Lodi city employee, from filing a $3,600 claim for the December accident, even after acknowledging the crash was his fault. After the city denied that claim because Gokey was, in essence, suing himself, he and his wife decided to file a new claim under her name. City Attorney Steve Schwabauer said this one also lacks merit because Rhonda Gokey can't...

Chul-Mo Sohn is a single father from Sacramento, CA who was raising his two daughters until the Department of Children and Family services interfered and destroyed his life, as well as the lives of his daughters. Chul-Mo is now on a hunger strike to his death to protest the destruction of his family by this corrupted agency that strip searched and handcuffed his twelve year old daughter for protesting against the removal of her little sister, Yih. When Chul-Mo intervened to protect his children from physical and sexual abuse, and took custody of the children to remove them to safety,...

The day didn't start off too well. My son has company, and I couldn't sleep all night. At 7am, my son and his friends hauled his amp up on top of the roof, and he played the Star Spangled Banner on his guitar. I ran out and yanked the extension cord. When I told him he could do it, I figured that he'd roll out of bed around noon, not still be up from the night before. Dinner was a disaster. The legs on the bbq broke, so my son and his friends "improvised". A lot of chicken hit the...

Executive summary On March 31, 2003, the Department of Labor (DOL) proposed regulatory changes, which if adopted, could make more than eight million white-collar employees ineligible for overtime pay. Under the current Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) regulations adopted in 1938, most workers—an estimated 79% as of 1999—are guaranteed the right to overtime pay, or time and a half, for every hour worked beyond the normal 40-hour workweek. For white-collar workers, three tests determine whether they are exempt, and thus ineligible for overtime pay, or nonexempt, and thereby eligible for overtime pay. The rule changes proposed by the Bush Administration...

I found this information from a poster over on SPARC www.deltabravo.net , and thought I would pass it along. Stalin and Hitler would be so proud. http://aspe.hhs.gov/hsp/ongoing.htm#ff-fpls-db The Federal Parent Locator Service (FPLS), TANF, and Medicaid Database PRWORA authorized HHS to retain data from the Federal Parent Locator Service (FPLS) for TANF and child support enforcement research purposes. This is a rich source of wage and employment data, but does not include key program participation and demographic variables. The purpose of this project is to insure that all child support administrative data is used to the full extent of its...

To: All Concerned Parties We the undersigned would like to oppose the gross abuse of power by Joseph P. Condon, a judge in McHenry County. On January 8, 2003. Judge Condon ordered Michael Franke to pay $7000 a year for his adult child for college support. This in addition $1800 a month Mr. Franke pays for child support for two minor children. Mr. Franke's ex-wife showed the court she has 401K money, $10,000 in savings, she gets $700 a month from her live-in boyfriend, she showed ownership of FOUR vehicles, one a new BMW for her boyfriend that is in...

This post by Waylon has to do with this story: http://www.komotv.com/news/story_m.asp?ID=28700 Does This T-Shirt Send The Right Message? This article was published on FR, and also SPARC. I gave up trying to find the posted article here. As the result of being bombarded by emails, calls, and faxes by both sites, Bon-Macy's pulled the t-shirts off the shelves. Waylon spoke with a rep from the manufacturer of the shirts, David and Goliath. I got permission from Waylon before I posted this, and I think that many of you will find this company's attitude interesting and maybe a little disturbing... You...

http://www.state.wv.us/wvsca/docs/fall03/31325d.htm No. 31325 - Erica Hager v. Travis Hager Davis, J., dissenting: In this proceeding, the Court was required to determine whether the lower court was correct in denying Erica Hager's (hereinafter referred to as “Ms. Hager”) petition for “joint physical custody” of her child. Instead of addressing this very narrow issue, the majority awarded Erica Hager full custody of the child. In reaching this decision, the majority states, on the first page of its opinion, that: “Most of the convoluted procedural and substantive history of this contested divorce/child custody case, which has gone on since 1997, is of no...

Hey Jim(Robinson), I've gotten some emails from people asking if Freerepublic can help them. They are dealing with unsympathetic judges(not to mention attorneys, social workers, and GAL's). This is about child custody and vistitation. There are so many horror stories out there, that I'm sticking my neck out and seeing if we can help them with positive ways to change the laws, and of course public perception :) Remember that sign I had for my first FReep? I believe that a child should know his/her real rather....and that a man should not be a victim and slave to the state....
