Laura Olson reports on the happenings in Harrisburg, where Republicans now control all of the branches of government: Senate Majority Leader Dominic Pileggi is trying to gather support to change the state's "winner-takes-all" approach for awarding electoral votes. Instead, he's suggesting that Pennsylvania dole them out based on which candidate wins each of the 18 congressional districts, with the final two going to the contender with the most votes statewide. In other reports, Pileggi sounds awfully sanguine about the effect this would have on PA as a swing state. Why even bring that up? Pennsylvania is typically a closely-divided state,...

In the wake of President Barack Obama's recent address to Congress on healthcare, a new poll reveals he may not have the support of most Americans on his reform plans. The Zogby International/O'Leary Report survey of more than 4,200 likely voters found that a large majority oppose key provisions of Obama and the Democrats' healthcare reform proposals, including plans to extend health insurance to as many as 50 million uninsured Americans and to incorporate a form of healthcare rationing in the reforms. Zogby International and The O'Leary Report asked respondents several questions relating to the healthcare reform issue. Some results:...

In Pennsylvania, John McCain is getting closer, but Barack Obama is still attracting a majority of voters. The latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of voters in the state shows Obama with 51% of the vote while McCain picks up 47%. That four-point advantage for Obama is down from a seven-point margin earlier in the week and a 13-point advantage for Obama earlier in the month. Just 75% of Pennsylvania Democrats now support their party’s nominee, down from 86% in the previous survey. Obama is doing a bit better among unaffiliated voters while Republican support for McCain remains steady (see crosstabs).

Four years ago, Osama bin Laden released a tape the Friday before Election Day. Sen. John Kerry is convinced it stalled his last-minute surge. Four years before that, the big story on the Friday before the election was that George. W. Bush had been arrested for DUI in Maine as a young man. His supporters are convinced that cost him the popular vote. Back in 1992, special prosecutor Lawrence Walsh indicted Defense Secretary Caspar Weinberger for his involvement in Iran-contra the Friday before the election. President George H.W. Bush and his team thought it cost them the election.

The Rasmussen Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Friday shows Barack Obama with 51% of the vote, John McCain with 47%. Over the past five days, Obama's lead has been between three and five percentage points each day. That's a bit tighter than the four to eight point margins enjoyed by the Democrat for the previous month (see trends).

McCain shaved 0.7 point off Obama’s lead Sunday, with undecideds starting to commit. McCain opened a 13-point lead with married women, but – thanks to his 41-point (and growing) lead with singles -- Obama still had a double-digit advantage among women overall. McCain reached a new high with conservatives, but Obama led for the first time among seniors.

PRINCETON, NJ -- Gallup finds 13% of registered voters saying they will vote for president for the first time in 2008. That matches the figure Gallup found in its final 2004 pre-election poll. The current data are based on interviews with more than 2,700 registered voters as part of Oct. 17-19 Gallup Poll Daily tracking. Gallup asked these voters a question it had asked in its 2004 election polling: whether this would be the first time they had voted in a presidential election, or whether they had voted for president before. Despite much discussion of the possibility of large numbers...
