NORFOLK, VA. (NNS) -- Two F/A-18F Super Hornets assigned to Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 211 flying off the coast of Cape Hatteras were involved in an in-flight mishap at approximately 10:40 a.m. local time. The flight was part of a routine training mission. All aircrew have been recovered and are en route to medical facilities for evaluation. The F/A-18F is a two-seat aircraft. VFA-211 is based at Naval Air Station Oceana. A safety investigation will be carried out to determine the cause of the accident.

A team of researchers led by NOAA’s Office of National Marine Sanctuaries have discovered two significant shipwrecks from World War II’s legendary “Battle of the Atlantic” just off Cape Hatteras, North Carolina. The German U-boat 576 and the freighter it sank, named Bluefields, were found just a few hundred yards apart from each other approximately 30 miles off the coast of North Carolina, according to NOAA.

Confusion, chaos, and outrage reigned after the North Carolina Department of Transportation’s sudden decision today to close the Bonner Bridge over Oregon Inlet immediately. Unearthed photos a gift to historians on OBX Manteo. N.C. A collection of old photos, some not seen before by local historians, shows wreckage in Hatteras after the big hurricane of 1899. Carol Cronk Cole, granddaughter of an employee of the Virginia Beach weather bureau office in the 1890s, has given copies of 20 photographs to the Outer Banks History Center in Manteo.
