ST. LOUIS (CBS St. Louis/AP) — A photo of St. Louis Cardinals mascot Fredbird holding a “police lives matter” sign was posted to a police association Facebook page before the team asked that it be taken down. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports sports website Deadspin took aim at the mascot last week after the photo was posted to the St. Louis Police Officers Association Facebook page. Deadspin titled the post: “Your Racist Uncle Will Love This Picture Of The Cardinals’ Mascot.”

On Sunday, May 17, the mascot of the St. Louis Cardinals held a sign that read "Police Lives Matter." The person in the mascot outfit said he did not know what was on the sign. For this action, Fredbird has been labelled a "racist." Again, this is a baseball mascot holding a sign saying that police lives matter. The website Deadspin learned of the picture below and ran a story titled, "Your Racist Uncle Will Love This Picture Of The Cardinals' Mascot:" The author of the article, Tom Ley, then rambles for several paragraphs in an expletive-filled tirade. ...The image...

I have wanted to write about this for soooooo long now. Kathnet broke this, in German HERE. Remember the Five Cardinals Book™? Remaining in the Truth of Christ: Marriage and Communion in the Catholic Church helped to turn the tide – in a good way – during last October’s Synod of Bishops... ...It contains essays of five cardinals, of the archbishop secretary of the Vatican congregation for the Oriental Churches, and of three scholars direct at the notions suggested by Walter Card. Kasper in the opening discourse of the consistory in February 2014. It blew the Kasper proposals and arguments...

(Vatican Radio)  Among the 20 new cardinals created by Pope Francis Saturday are men drawn from churches on the peripheries of the ecclesial and geographical world. The director of Vatican Radio English section, Sean Patrick Lovett, takes a closer look at some of the newest members of the College of Cardinals: Just how far do the peripheries of the Church extend? For an answer, you could go to Google maps or get out your world atlas. Or you could simply look at the countries from which the 20 new cardinals come, and see for yourself: from Mozambique to Mexico, from Thailand to...

Pope picks 15 new cardinals reflecting diversity By The Associated Press VATICAN CITY (AP) - Pope Francis named 15 new cardinals Sunday, selecting them from 14 nations including far-flung corners of the world such as Tonga, New Zealand, Cape Verde and Myanmar to reflect the diversity of the church and its growth in places like Asia and Africa compared to affluent regions. Other cardinals hail from Ethiopia, Thailand and Vietnam. None came from the United States and only three European nations received new cardinals - Portugal and Spain in addition to Italy. Cape Verde, Tonga and Myanmar gained cardinals for...

Antonio Socci sounds the alarm concerning the Cardinals being rapidly appointed by Francis. Now, the number of Cardinals who can be elected Pope will be still roughly limited to 120 (a number Francis has to power to modify, but has not done up to now). One could, therefore, not say Francis is being overzealous. On the other hand, he is being certainly attentive to appoint as many Cardinals as he can within the framework set up by his predecessors since Paul VI. There is no doubt in my mind Francis does it in order to subvert the Church and make...

I live in the Florida panhandle. I have a couple of bird feeders in my yard and I keep them filled. For the last few weeks, I haven't had to add any food. It dawned on me that there are no birds in my yard anymore. I used to have many cardinals along with jays, doves, woodpeckers and all the little ones I am not smart enough to identify. I thought it was just me, but I had dinner with two of my neighbors the other night and they brought up the subject asking where the birds have gone. Have...

GM John Mozeliak expressed his condolences to the family according to USA Today, but said the team was awaiting more details before making a formal announcement. MLB announced the news on Twitter. Taveras made his MLB debut with St. Louis this season and hit .239 in 80 games. Taveras hit a game-tying pinch-hit solo home run in the seventh inning of Game 2 of the NLCS against the Giants two...

VATICAN CITY — Inaccurate media reports about Church teaching on homosexuality published after the Extraordinary Synod of Bishops on the Family’s midterm relatio was released are an attempt to pressure the Church to change its perennial teaching, a cardinal who is also a synod father has said. Cardinal Robert Sarah, president of the Pontifical Council Cor Unum, emphasized to CNA Oct. 16 that “what has been published by the media about homosexual unions is an attempt to push the Church [to change] her doctrine.” “The Church has never judged homosexual persons, but homosexual behavior and homosexual unions are grave deviations...

This guy right here, the one with "I am Darren Wilson" taped onto the back of his Cardinals jersey—an homage to the Ferguson, Mo., police officer who shot an unarmed teenager named Mike Brown to death in August—was at the Cardinals game last night. He, along with many other Cardinals fans, clashed with a small group of protesters who want to see Wilson prosecuted. The guy in the Darren Wilson jersey wasn't even the worst part. Here is a video of some of the protest from last night, via Argus Streaming News. It's rather long, so I'll point out some...

September 17, 2014 Explaining My Decision to Serve as Grand Marshal I haven’t been in this much hot water since I made the comment, right after I arrived as your archbishop five-and-a-half years ago, that Stan Musial—my boyhood hero of my hometown St. Louis Cardinals—was a much better ballplayer than Joe DiMaggio! Now I’m getting as much fiery mail and public criticism over my decision to accept the honor of Grand Marshal of this year’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade. According to the critics, I should have refused, due to the Parade Committee’s decision to allow a group of self-identified Gays...

Cardinals defensive lineman Darnell Dockett isn't afraid to speak his mind, and it usually takes place on Twitter. Often, it's funny, other times it's just weird (and ultimately not true). But on Saturday, Dockett probably would've been better off saying nothing at all.

“Like Pope Francis? You’ll love Jesus.” It was a well-circulated Washington Post headline in December, but it could have been the tagline for the March 18 Francis Factor event held at Loyola University Maryland in Baltimore. As a cardinal, archbishop and four Catholic expert panelists shared insights from Pope Francis’ first year, they repeatedly shifted the attention away from the pope and onto the Son of God. Pope Francis would have done no less. “The pope is a true companion of Jesus,” said Cardinal Seán P. O’Malley, a Capuchin Franciscan and archbishop of Boston, in the evening’s keynote address. Speaking...

Pope Francis named his first batch of cardinals Sunday, choosing 19 men from around the world, including the developing nations of Haiti and Burkina Faso, in line with his belief the church must pay more attention to the poor. But advocates for victims of sex abuse by Catholic clergy said they felt let down that Francis didn't unequivocally embrace their calls that prelates who hadn't made a clean break with past practices of covering up pedophile behavior never be promoted. Francis read out the 19 names to a crowd of tens of thousands in St. Peter's Square....

Craig Kimbrel is supposedly the heir to Mariano Rivera. In his postseason career as closer, Rivera recorded 27 appearances of 2+ innings. Uribe bunted two balls foul, ... and then tomahawked a high fastball from David Carpenter into left-field stands for a shocking two-run homer .... Note that I wrote "David Carpenter" and not "Craig Kimbrel." The Braves had to win this game. Lose, and they go home. Somehow they lost -- in the late innings, no less -- without using the most dominant relief pitcher in the game. The sad thing is, Gonzalez apparently didn't even think of using...
