A local school district is apologizing after an apparent incident of racism at a boys high school basketball game this past weekend. When the final whistle blew Saturday, Alamo Heights celebrated a convincing victory over San Antonio Edison. Alamo Heights Head Coach Andrew Brewer said he was proud of his team. “Tremendously proud,” Brewer said. “Tremendously. It’s the best group of kids.” But it was just after the trophy presentation when the coach was not proud of the chant coming from Alamo Heights fans. “USA, USA, USA,” they chanted. San Antonio Independent School District officials took the chant as a...

My fearless friend Cliff Kincaid of America’s Survival attended the pro North Korean Workers World Party National Conference in New York on November 13. He recorded this video before he was kicked out. Watch WWP operative Teresa Gutierrez call for freedom for terrorist lawyer Lynne Stewart (now serving 10 years in prison for illegally assisting Islamic terrorist clients), Leonard Peltier (who killed two FBI agents), and five Cuban spies in prison in the U.S. Watch the crowd chant “Si Se Puede!”, Cesar Chavez’s old slogan, now a communist battle cry. Barack Obama’s campaign anglicized this in 2008, as “Yes we...

Remarks will go out soon, but Obamatouched on similar themes from previous speeches. Obama said that he wasglad to "see this crowd fired up.""I've got to make sure you stay fired up.".

After years of observing the Catholic music scene, particular as it affects the liturgical life of the Church, I think I can narrow down the most pressing problems of our time. The good news is that all five problem have answers that are readily at hand. For this reason, we all have cause for being extremely hopeful. 1. Musicians do not have a model, much less ideals, in mind. Catholic musicians are very sincere people who aspire to do research so that they can do their jobs well. They order book after book and read many official documents. And yet...

Photo by Chris LightJeffrey Tucker, Sacred Music correspondent for the New Liturgical Movement, is understandably thrilled to see that the Archabbey of St Meinrad in Indiana is making its music available in pdf form free of charge on the internet with an explicit Creative Commons licence. If you wish to buy a printed copy of one of the books, you can do so. St Meinrad have chosen to publish their books via Lulu. There you can see that some works are still only available as e-books (with a small charge) but the monks are committed to making them all available...

Saturday, November 14, 2009 Fr. Robert Fromageot, FSSP, on Life on the Rock by Jeffrey Tucker On Life on the Rock, EWTN, Fr. Robert Fromageot, who teaches at Our Lady of Guadalupe, speaks about Gregorian chant. It is a very interesting interview, beginning at 17:00. He speaks about "learned perceptivity" and how the values and understanding we bring to chant influences our comprehension of its meaning. Fr. patiently explains such terms as "introit" and "Asperges" - and he is wise to do so, but it is notable that he does so with the knowledge that most all of the Catholic...

Boredom during the liturgy is something all Catholics have felt from time to time, and it's never justifiable. No matter how mundane the architecture, how dull the homily, or how bad the music, what's taking place on the altar is a miraculous sacrifice that gives us the grace for salvation. That reality should be enough to keep our attention.   And yet boredom is a reality that good liturgy can help fight. Many parishes try to do so by inventing every manner of new enticement: brighter and larger banners, forced attempts to create an upbeat environment of friendliness and...

This is a sample of Greek Orthodox Byzantine music chanted by nuns in a Monastery of northern Greek Mainland (Hsuxastirio Timiou Prodromou Akritoxoriou Sidirokastrou Serron). The Hymn is an extract from a book called "Theotokario" and it is dedicated to the Most Holy Mother of God (Theotokos, Virgin Mary). It is usually chanted in Greek monasteries during the afternoon (after Vespers). The pictures of the video come from a different monastery of Northern Greece (Giannitsa/Pella, Iera Moni Agiou Georgiou Anudrou).

They are raising money doing one of the things they do best: sing! The chant is fantastic, and very valuable for anyone who loves the Gregorian tradition, because the Norbertine books offer a slight variation on the Roman chant. They sing beautifully, based on their last CD of Christmas propers (a CD which I just adore), and this one appears to offer a broader range of music.

HEILIGENKREUZ, Austria — Working to reach No. 1 on the charts? Try praying. Johannes Paul Chavanne, a monk at Heiligenkreuz Abbey, said there were concerns about how the CD would be marketed.  That's how the monks of Heiligenkreuz Abbey found fame. Their compilation of Gregorian chants, a form of sung prayer, has stormed pop music charts worldwide. The debut CD, "Chant: Music for Paradise," was first released in Europe in May and spent 15 weeks at No. 1 on Britain's classical charts. The album made it to No. 7 on the country's pop charts.  It was also the top...

[A true friend of mine, whom I've known for just over a year, gave me a present, in true Hobbit form, at her birthday party this month. The present, a sixty-year-old book, is a 1948 reprint of a 1914 edition of the Little Office of the Blessed Virgin Mary, printed by E.J. Dwyer, an Australian publisher. When I heard the report at the end of last week that Pope Benedict has asked the Congregation for Divine Worship to study some potential changes to the liturgy, I got very excited. Think about all the possibilities! Think about what the Mass could be, rather than what it often is. The abuses and experiments, gone! The tawdry celebration of self, gone! Latin back in its proper place! Gregorian Chant! The priest's magnificent back on glorious display! The more I thought about it the more excited I became and the more I started wondering how would such a change be...

Parish music directors -- and congregations -- in the Archdiocese of St. Louis soon will benefit from Archbishop Raymond Burke’s recent initiative: The Institute for Sacred Music. In Part 1 of this interview with ZENIT,...
