If you of a certain age, you may remember the great American heyday of kids’ breakfast cereals. It was a glorious time — a time when supermarket aisles as long as basketball courts teemed with boxes of sugary goodness and when we were all free to buy Count Chocula cereal every day of the year. Those days are long gone. Still, since 2010, Americans have at least been able to look forward to seasonal distribution of Count Chocula cereal — and Franken-Berry, and Boo-Berry — during the September and October run-up to Halloween. Now, even this tradition is imperiled because some hipster...

Disclaimer: I am not a member of the "FR fundraising committee". I just wanted to challenge my "RED" blooded Marylanders to pony up to keep Free Republic going. I noticed that Maryland is moving up in the total donations chart. We are now #6 over VA @ #10, which is encouraging, BUT, CA is #2. WTH? Are we more liberal than CA? I know we're not as wealthy as most Californians, but come on Marylanders, show your determination to make a change.Give $1, $2, $5, or $10 to help Jim get the facts out.

  • LA area Port Traffic in September: Imports Highest since 2006, Exports Soft

    Calculated Risk Blog ^ | 10-21-2014 | Bill McBride
Container traffic gives us an idea about the volume of goods being exported and imported - and possibly some hints about the trade report for September since LA area ports handle about 40% of the nation's container port traffic. Usually imports peak in the July to October period as retailers import goods for the Christmas holiday, and then decline sharply and bottom in February or March (depending on the timing of the Chinese New Year). Imports were up 10.6% year-over-year in September, exports were down 5.6% year-over-year. This might suggest retailers are expecting a happy holiday season.
  • Frequently Asked Questions - Supreme Court of the United States

    10/21/2014 10:34:32 PM PDT · by Citizen Zed · 3 replies
How long is the term of a Supreme Court Justice? The Constitution states that Justices "shall hold their Offices during good Behaviour." This means that the Justices hold office as long as they choose and can only be removed from office by impeachment. Has a Justice ever been impeached? The only Justice to be impeached was Associate Justice Samuel Chase in 1805. The House of Representatives passed Articles of Impeachment against him; however, he was acquitted by the Senate. Who decides how many Justices are on the Court? Have there always been nine? The Constitution places the power to determine...

Orange is the New Black stars have partnered with Planned Parenthood, the nations largest abortion business, in their campaign “Women are Watching.” The campaign is intended to get women to the polls and vote for pro-abortion politicians this November. Selenis Leyva and Natasha Lyonne helped designed t-shirts that read, “I am one of the 99% of women who have used birth control,” on the front and “It’s my business. Not politicians’” on the back. organgeisthenewblackSelenis Leyva said, “It’s hard to believe that there are still politicians trying to take away our access to birth control. I believe a decision from the grand jury is just around the corner. With this in mind... Do you think that Officer Darren Wilson will face charges - or not? Do you think the grand jury should give equal weight to both sides (eyewitness Officer Darren Wilson and the 5 other eyewitnesses)? Are civilan eyewitness accounts (be it one person or more) ever equal to that of a police officer? If so, in which cases? If the 5 eyewitnesses don't agree on all things, should the grand jury take into account everything the 5 eyewitnesses do agree upon? Does the...

I live in a quiet subdivision in rural Ontario. I mean very quiet—all summer long, I rarely saw any kids outside biking or playing street hockey or running flimsy lemonade stands or just roughhousing around outside. Then, the day school started, I was shocked when I left my house in the morning and I saw kids everywhere, backpacks in tow, heading to bus stops and walking to the nearby school. This many kids live in my neighborhood? I thought to myself. Where were they all summer? There are a number of possible answers, of course. Some were probably on vacation....
