In my last column, I proposed some explanations for why many conservative parents have left-wing children. In a nutshell, American parents who hold traditional American values — such as belief in small government as the basis of liberty, or a God-based moral code, or American military strength as the greatest contributor to world peace and stability, or American exceptionalism, not to mention the man-woman definition of marriage or the worth of a human fetus — are at war with almost every influence on their children’s lives. On a sweltering New York City day in July, 1991, a highway worker made a horrible discovery. He had noticed a putrid odor just off the Henry Hudson Parkway in the Washington Heights neighborhood of upper Manhattan and traced it to a dirty cooler. HUNTINGTON, WV - A mom and dad are facing charges after officers say the parents had no idea the toddler was found in a store parking lot wearing nothing but shoes. A couple says their dog sniffed out a baby abuser in their home, the woman who was supposed to be caring for their seven month old son. The babysitter, 22-year-old Alexis Khan pleaded guilty to assault and battery Monday afternoon in Charleston County Circuit Court. BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) — A former Billings Senior High School teacher who pleaded guilty to raping a 14-year-old student who later killed herself has been sentenced to 30 days in jail by a judge who said the victim was "older than her chronological age" and "as much in control of the situation" as the teacher. District Judge G. Todd Baugh sentenced Stacey Dean Rambold to 15 years in prison for sexual intercourse without consent, with all but 31 days suspended. CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- An 8-year-old boy was taken into custody after police say he stabbed his four-year-old sister in the neck. It happened Sunday afternoon at the family's home on Hunt Avenue in Charleston. Police say the boy was stabbing his sister's baby doll with a steak knife. The girl tried to get the doll back, but police say her brother got upset and stabbed her. The girl was taken to the hospital. Her injuries are non-life threatening, but she is being kept overnight for observation.

The state Supreme Court has unanimously upheld the rape and sexual assault convictions against Ernest Willis who is serving a 15-to-30 year prison sentence for forcibly raping his teenage babysitter twice, whom he knew through Trinity Baptist Church in Concord, in 1997. A 10-year-old girl was arrested for the alleged rape of a 4-year-old boy in Houston, but the mother of girl says the incident was innocent. “She was just being a child, having fun and playing,” the mom told KHOU. “She didn’t know she was doing anything wrong.”

An unusual case in Tennessee shows the utility of guns for home defense, as well as the danger of pursuing criminals alone.  A 16-year-old girl used her mothers pistol to prevent a criminal from entering the house. Two women are in jail following a bizarre child abuse case that started with violent cell phone pictures. Cecile and Meleny Kranwinkle are charged with felony child neglect and threats by phone. Charleston Police said this started after they got a 911 phone call from a man in New York. The man said his children were being held hostage here in Charleston. He told police someone was texting him violent pictures of his 4-month-old-baby. He said in the pictures, someone was holding a knife to the baby's throat and there appeared to be blood on the baby's clothes.
