In the gloomy Officers’ Mess of a rain-swept Royal Marines base on a miserable October morning, choirmaster Gareth Malone is chatting animatedly about the importance of encouraging people to sing, when he is interrupted by a very large, rather menacing individual in green Army fatigues. “I just wanted to shake your hand,” the marine says, thrusting out his own massive mitt towards Malone. “My wife thinks you’re the dog’s bollocks” The contrast between the fresh-faced, bespectacled, slightly fogey-ish choirmaster and this gruff giant of British military manhood borders on the comical. Yet the encounter illustrates the degree to which Malone,...

I am not a good singer, but I love to sing in the choir. I love being able to see the faces of those being blessed in song. I love the privilege of being able to contribute to their blessing. My favorite time to sing is when the song makes me think of being in His presence, lifting my voice with all of the saints in heaven.

The Tallis Choir of Toronto has an intriguing offering this Advent: the Gabrieli Midnight Mass of 1605 in which they set out "to recreate the splendour of Christmas Eve in the ducal chapel of San Marco in Venice." They provide the following notes: Midnight Mass in Renaissance Venice “Music … so good, so delectable, so rare, so admirable, so super excellent, that it did even ravish and stupefy all those strangers that never heard the like!†So wrote an astonished 17th century English visitor after hearing high mass in San Marco in Venice. Today even concert musicians are looking...

Scientists and composers have produced a new choral work in which performers sing parts of their own genetic code. Human DNA is made up of just four different chemical compounds, which gave musician Andrew Morley the idea of assigning a note to each of them. The new piece, Allele, will be performed by the New London Chamber Choir at the Royal Society of Medicine on 13 July. Each of the 40-strong choir has also had his or her own DNA decoded. "I'd sung quite a lot with choirs in my youth and I've written stuff myself, and so I was...

Any one remember this way back in 1981? The Mormon Tabernacle Choir singing Battle Hymn of the Republic to Ronald Reagan at the Inaugural Parade. Possibly the best or second best patriotic song to ever be written.... Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord; He is trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored. He hath loosed the fateful lightning of His terrible swift sword; His truth is marching on! [chorus] Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! His truth is marching on. I have seen Him in the watch-fires...

In what I can only describe as being one of the most remarkable performances I have ever seen, two boys from the Catalunia Catholic Boy's choir sing the "Meow" song to classical music. You really must see this to believe it. I came away from watching this video with a new found respect for the talent these boys have been blessed with. The official name of the choir is called "La Escolania", and they are associated with one of the oldest monasterys in Europe, the monastery of Montserrat. This monastery is the destination of some of the largest pilgrimages in...

As I left the building I felt sorry for the young lady. She was there the entire evening, had sung in the choir, but had missed the wonder of Christmas. She had not seen Jesus. All she had noticed was a defective flashlight.

IN a city where people daily take to the streets to shout and wave placards about everything from food scares to tax hikes, one enterprising group has decided to voice their frustrations in song. The Hong Kong Complaints Choir has taken its cue from the English city of Birmingham, where the first complaints choir was launched by Finnish artists Oliver Kochta-Kalleinen and Tellervo Kalleinen. The movement has since spread to more than 20 cities, including Hamburg, St. Petersburg, New York, Chicago and Singapore. Hong Kong organisers say their tuneful tirades, performed by up to 40 choristers at a time, add...

Music brought Rodaniel Cruz back to the Church. Three years ago, the then-29 year old attended Mass at St. Elizabeth's Church in Rockville. He grew up Catholic in the Philippines, but had strayed from the Church in his early adult life. That changed with a song - Dimitri Bortniansky's "Cherubic hymn." "Like a king of hosts shall we praise thee," the St. Elizabeth choir sang. "It's one of the most beautiful pieces I've ever heard," Cruz said. "Music is pretty much what brought me back to the Church." Cruz is one of 250 people who will sing in the...
