SIMI VALLEY, Calif. - As Republican presidential contenders meet for their first debate on Thursday (live on MSNBC TV and MSNBC.com at 8 p.m. ET), social conservatives, a powerful force within the GOP, face the possibility that the party will nominate a candidate next year who isn’t really one of them.

I gave a talk recently on one of my favorite topics: liberal bias in the media. In the course of my remarks I referred to a quote made famous by Finley Peter Dunne's fictional alter ego, Mr. Dooley, a caricature of an Irishman from the old country who once sarcastically declared that the job of the newspaper is to "comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable." Dunne, himself, was a one-time Progressive who saw the light and became a Teddy Roosevelt Republican and a critic of sanctimonious do-gooders. Sounds like Chris is trying to set up the Republicans for complete failure in the event of another terrorist attack. I guess we can expect this to be the MSM approach to the crapy 9/11 commission recommendations.

After being responsible for spearheading the re-election of their candidate, instead of receiving congratulations, Christian Evangelicals got to hear NBC stars denigrate their intelligence, turn their support for President Bush into a negative, and even seek to nullify President Bush's electoral victory.
