Media Matters for America is organized as a tax exempt 501(c)3 organization. Under IRS guidelines, they must abide by several rules to maintain this status. Specifically, 501(c)3 organizations are absolutely prohibited from directly or indirectly participating in, or intervening in, any political campaign on behalf of (or in opposition to) any candidate for elective public office. You can read an interesting article on this subject "Is Media Matters Breaking the law in its ‘war' on Fox News?" The article strongly suggests that Media Matters is violating its exemption as an educational foundation by actively participating in partisan political activities. Specifically...

A firm handshake is usually seen as a good thing in business and even in politics. Not so much in South Florida. A candidate for the Broward County School Board wants the cops to lock up her opponent after what she claims was akin to battery after a recent debate. Jaemi Levine filed a complaint with the Broward Sheriff's Office claiming David Thomas squeezed her hand so hard during a post-debate handshake Tuesday that it now hurts. Instead of getting a grip on education issues, Thomas decided to get a grip on his opponent for the Disctrict 4 seat. Levine...

In a close election race against former Hewlett-Packard executive Carly Fiorina, California Democrat Sen. Barbara Boxer is facing new ethics complaints over asking teachers to send their students to work for her campaign. In an Oct. 27 letter to California education authorities, the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association (HJTA), a non-profit group urging lower taxes, said, “In abject ignorance of California state law, the political campaign of Senator Barbara Boxer has openly solicited teachers employed by [Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD)] to urge their students to volunteer for her campaign.” The HJTA letter refers to a letter obtained by the...

A civil rights complaint has been filed against a woman in Grand Rapids , Mich., who posted an advertisement at her church last July seeking a Christian roommate. The ad "expresses an illegal preference for a Christian roommate, thus excluding people of other faiths,” according to the complaint filed by the Fair Housing Center of West Michigan. "It's a violation to make, print or publish a discriminatory statement," Executive Director Nancy Haynes told Fox News. "There are no exemptions to that."

The already bloated doctrine of federal preemption must not be further engorged. On July 6, 2010, the Holder Justice Department, allegedly without consultation with President Obama, filed suit in federal district court in Arizona to block the new Arizona law intended to enforce existing federal laws against unlawful immigration, something the federal government itself has patently failed to do. The suit asks the court for, among other things, an order restraining Arizona from implementing the new statute later this month as scheduled, pending the outcome of the litigation. It is evident that this was done for partisan political purposes, although...

OTTAWA (Reuters) – Canada's Liberal Party said on Thursday it was launching an ethics complaint against the Conservative government, charging it was playing partisan politics with stimulus programs. The Liberals lodged the complaint against Prime Minister Stephen Harper and 47 other legislators for putting their signatures at the bottom of oversized publicity checks used in announcing federal grants for infrastructure programs and other economic stimulus measures. In the case of at least two members of Parliament, they said, the Conservative Party logo was also on the checks. The Liberals have asked Ethics Commissioner Mary Dawson to rule that putting legislators'...

That didn't take long. Ray Ward's beef that accused Sarah of being paid for interviews on State time has been dismissed. The complaint was filed July 6. It was rejected in part because it was not properly notarized, the statement said. In addition, the Personnel Board had previously determined that interviews do not violate the state Ethics Act. And the complaint offered no evidence to support the claim the governor was paid, the statement said. If you're going to abuse the system, you at least may want to learn how to do it properly. Perhaps Ray should have consulted Zane...

Gay Marriage Proponents have been having all kinds of protest marches in cities such as Long Beach and Salt Lake City, Utah (where they are attacking the Mormon Church for exercising it's previously Constitutional right to express free speech). And there's video of a disturbing scene of an elderly woman carrying a cross being attacked in Palm Springs. But what is the basis for all of the pro-gay marriage anger? What is their grounds for demanding gay marriage? Up until very recently, there has never been such thing legally, culturally, socially or linguistically as a marriage that has NOT between...

I need some help, Freepers. I have been selling quite a bit of Sarah Palin-inspired merchandise through Cafepress since she was announced as John McCain's running mate. I am fully aware that there are people who do not feel the same way that we do about Sarah Palin, and I have no issue with anti-Palin merchandise being sold through Cafepress. That's a free exchange of ideas and opinions. However, today, I was looking through the Cafepress marketplace, and I started to notice some of the vicious anti-Palin stuff that's out there. I will not print the whole quote, but there...

As Dave Weigel noted yesterday, Dick Heller has filed a complaint in federal court that accuses the District of Columbia of failing to comply with the Supreme Court decision overturning D.C.'s handgun ban and firearm storage requirements. The complaint (PDF) focuses on two aspects of D.C.'s revised gun law that I discussed in my column last week: the ban on semiautomatic handguns and the requirement that any firearm in the home be kept unloaded and locked except "while it is being used to protect against a reasonably perceived threat of immediate harm to a person." The former restriction, note Heller's...

RHINEBECK - A neighbor of the Northern Dutchess Rod and Gun Club want state and federal environmental reviews of the Enterprise Road facility because of concerns that shot is landing in wetlands. Property owner Spero Chumas, a village resident who rents property near the range, spoke about the issue Tuesday as the sound of shots from the facility periodically rang out. Members are allowed to practice from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m. (or dusk) on a disputed trap range that neighbors say is an ongoing disturbance. Members of the 75-year-old organization, which also uses the 340-acre facility for fishing and...
