PLEASANT HILL -- A gay teenager denied his Eagle Scout award because of his sexuality turned in an online petition with more than 400,000 signatures Wednesday urging the National Boy Scouts of America to change its policies against allowing gay members. Ryan Andresen of Moraga marched into the front office of the Mt. Diablo Silverado Council on Ellinwood Way along with his parents and a former member of the same Boy Scout troop who came out as gay two weeks ago. Assemblymember Nancy Skinner, D-Berkeley, also attended and presented Andresen with a resolution honoring his achievements with the Boy Scouts....

The top reason people gave for leaving Massachusetts was a better job, followed by the cost of housing, family ties, and the weather. In a separate set of questions, 50 percent of those surveyed said the cost...

Christopher Noble, during an interview here. Noble, the commander of Coalition Task Group 58.1, is charged with protecting Iraq's oil terminals, located in Iraqi territorial waters. However, exchanges with ships manned by Iranian Revolutionary Guardsmen are not as professional, and the Iranian ships test the coalition on occasion. "But it's still a crisp relationship, and they know why we're here," said...

CHATTANOOGA -- Betty Moorer stands out from the other employees selling burgers and fries at a Krystal restaurant. For one thing, she's the only one wearing a gold shirt. She's the only one with a name tag identifying her as a "master cashier." And she's also the only one getting paid extra for being friendly and courteous to customers. Moorer, who has worked at Krystal in south Chattanooga for three years, is the first employee in the 425-restaurant chain to achieve the special designation as part of a program to combat complaints of indifferent and surly fast-food service. "A smile...
