  • Coywolf: Greater Than The Sum Of Its Parts

It is rare for a new animal species to emerge in front of scientists’ eyes. But this seems to be happening in eastern North America. ___ Like some people who might rather not admit it, wolves faced with a scarcity of potential sexual partners are not beneath lowering their standards. It was desperation of this sort, biologists reckon, that led dwindling wolf populations in southern Ontario to begin, a century or two ago, breeding widely with dogs and coyotes. The clearance of forests for farming, together with the deliberate persecution which wolves often suffer at the hand of man, had...

Humans are not newcomers when it comes to messing around with nature. While we haven't created Frankenstein's monster yet, what we do transforms the natural world. One recent example is the creation of the coywolf — a hybrid of the coyote and the wolf that is also known as the Eastern coyote. According to a new article from The Economist, their population seems to have reached more than a million. These animals have a completely new genetic makeup: Their genes are about one-quarter wolf DNA and two-thirds coyote DNA; the rest is from domesticated dogs. A 2013 study suggests this...

MARION, Ohio (AP) — The thousand-mile journey to the Texas border was supposed to bring the Guatemalan teenagers to a better life. Instead, it was the beginning of a terrible ordeal: prosecutors say they were fraudulently plucked from U.S. custody by conspirators posing as friends or family who forced them to work as virtual slaves. As the country's immigration system was being overwhelmed by an unprecedented flow of unaccompanied children fleeing unrest in Central America, prosecutors said one of their countrymen orchestrated the scheme to force them to work on egg farms in Ohio. U.S. immigration policy dictates that unaccompanied...

Traveling by Jeep, boat and foot, Tribune-Review investigative reporter Carl Prine and photojournalist Justin Merriman covered more than 1,900 miles over two months along the border with Mexico to report on coyotes — the human traffickers who bring illegal immigrants in the United States. Most are Americans working for money and/or drugs. This series reports how their operations have a major impact on life for residents and the environment along the border — and beyond.

Police caught another not-so-wily coyote Saturday morning in lower Manhattan after a nearly hour-long pursuit, officials said. The critter was first spotted around 7:30 a.m. in Battery Park City, police said. Cops quickly responded, chasing after the fast-moving critter on foot and in police cruisers, authorities said. The coyote was eventually cornered near a cafe at North Cove Marina about an hour after being first spotted, cops said. Police shot the animal with tranquilizer darts, placed it in a cage and brought it to Animal Care & Control’s East Harlem facility. It is unclear if the coyote captured Saturday was...

Maybe it was thirsty. A coyote scampered back and forth across the roof of a Long Island City bar on Monday, as stunned locals gawked at their wild neighbor. “He didn’t pay his bar tab, so he ran out onto the rooftop,” quipped L.I.C. Bar owner Brian Porter.

PLAINS, Mont., Dec. 11 (UPI) -- A dead coyote hung from a tree with a Christmas bow along a Montana school bus route is outraging residents, but police said the display is not illegal. Plains resident Mary Ellen Siegford, who posted a picture of the less-than-cheerful holiday display on Facebook, said her daughter burst into tears when she saw the dead animal. "A lot of people were just like, 'Well, be glad it's dead. You don't have to worry about it eating your pets,'" Siegford told KECI-TV. "But I don't know. To me, it's morbid, it rings of animal cruelty....

The California Fish and Game Commission has banned predator killing contests, ending a fierce debate over the rural tradition. The commission’s 4-1 vote Wednesday marks the first prohibition in the country against the practice of giving out prizes for gunning down coyotes and other predators, which wildlife advocates say happens almost every month in California and nearby states. “This ruling sets a trend for the nation,” said Camilla Fox, executive director of Project Coyote, which petitioned the state to end the contests. “Our hope is that other states will follow suit and ban wildlife killing contests. Such barbaric cruelty should...

Mac, Coyote Fighter The first coyote was recorded in New Hampshire in 1972.  By 1980, they were found across the state.  Eastern coyotes have wolf genes, and are larger than the western variety, reaching as much as 60 lbs. The first coyote attack on a human in New Hampshire occurred in 2012.  Ironically, the boy's dog ran off, leaving him to fight the coyote.  From inquisiter.com: The boy’s dog ran away when the coyote approached which left the boy to fend off the coyote’s attack on his own. After repeatedly punching the coyote in the nose, the coyote eventually...

At Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Republican U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz and Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott emerged from a tour calling the situation a “humanitarian crisis” — the same way President Barack Obama has described more than 52,000 children who’ve entered the country illegally in recent months. “We are witnessing a humanitarian crisis unfolding that is the direct consequence of President Obama’s lawlessness,” Cruz said. “We just toured this Air Force facility, where up to 1,200 children are being cared for… but they have come through harrowing circumstances.” Cruz said his experience at the temporary shelter was...

And, as one reader noted: he's not on his cellphone! This is a pretty good example of how pedestrians should be on the roadways in San Francisco -- even if the example is a coyote. Jennifer Anwaya snapped this image which we spotted on Richmondsfblog.com this morning. Apparently, the prairie wolf was seen casually making his way across Geary Boulevard at 37th Avenue earlier this week. No word on where he was headed that evening. Perhaps it was just an urban stroll.
