Last week I wandered into the Church of Scientology in Pasadena, California, and what happened during my visit made me afraid for the church's members. While shopping along Raymond Avenue in Old Town Pasadena last week, my friend and I stopped into the Church of Scientology to take a free personality test that was advertised on an A-frame chalkboard sign just outside. As a Christian, I wasn’t really searching for guidance or salvation, but I wanted to hear the Church of Scientology’s elevator pitch. I wanted to know what they said to make people fork over massive amounts of money,...

Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-Texas) called GOP frontrunner Donald Trump’s charge that Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) was a primary supporter of Chief Justice John Roberts “ludicrous” and “ridiculous.” Gohmert argued that Trump should not be questioning Cruz’s judgment on Supreme Court nominations since he has donated to Democratic politicians in the past. “I thought one of the best points made all night long was to point out the hypocrisy,” Gohmert, who has endorsed Cruz, told PJM at the Conservative Political Action Conference. During the most recent GOP debate in Detroit, Trump addressed Cruz directly, saying, “So we’re listening to the all-talk,...

In the minds of his believers, Barack Obama has only to utter words and they become so. It is a phenomenon somewhere on the border between politics and religion. In the arena of Biblical scholarship called the New Hermeneutic, spoken words can become self-actualizing language events. This power, reinforced by media adoration, was an effective element of Obama's campaign speeches. And it continued to be effective into his first 100 some days in office. First, we'll review (aiming to be succinct) a school of Biblical criticism based on the notion of self-actualizing language. Then, apply it to how Barack Obama...

Nevada Highway Patrolman Eddie Dutchover wasn't expecting much when he stopped the maroon 2007 Cadillac Escalade heading north out of Las Vegas. All the officer wanted to know was why the car had paper tags rather than license plates. But there was something strange about the tall, thin man in the back seat. The guy seemed nervous, so jittery you could see the main artery in his neck furiously pumping blood up into his face. Plus, he was obsessively eating a salad, refusing to make eye contact with the patrolman. It was a hunch, but the cop was on the...

SALT LAKE CITY - An evangelical Christian minister claims he was unlawfully arrested while trying to tape a performance of a Mormon-themed pageant in the Clarkston Cemetery near Logan Friday night. Joel Kramer, 39, was arrested and booked for disorderly conduct after he told a Cache County sheriff's deputy he was not violating any laws by videotaping the pageant. The pageant depicts the life of Martin Harris, an early disciple of Joseph Smith, founder of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. "These are free pageants, so there's no copyright violation and I'm within my rights to be on...
