BOSTON (AP) — A prominent Irishman who lived illegally in Boston for years has been deported, closing a case that has generated fear and anxiety within the state’s sizeable Irish expat community. John Cunningham returned to Ireland on Wednesday night, a spokesman for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement confirmed on Thursday. The 38-year old electrical contractor had been in custody since he was arrested at his home on June 16. Federal immigration officials have said Cunningham represented an ‘‘enforcement priority’’ because he overstayed a 90-day visa by more than a decade....

A prominent Boston man nabbed by ICE last month for overstaying his visa by more than a decade has been sent back to Ireland, and the city’s Irish community is still worried about further deportations, an advocate said. John Cunningham, 38, was a Brighton-based electrical contractor before he was detained for overstaying a 90-day visa that he used to enter the U.S. in 2003. Cunningham left on a commercial flight Wednesday night. “ICE is enforcing the law, it’s simple and sometimes painful but they’re just doing their jobs,” said immigration attorney John Foley, a board member of the cultural center...

Bottom line: So-called real Americans are screwing up America. Maybe they should leave, so that we can replace them with new and better ones: newcomers who are more appreciative of what the United States has to offer, more ambitious for themselves and their children, and more willing to sacrifice for the future.

For the first time in U.S. history, attorneys for an illegal immigrant in Houston are appealing to federal religious freedom laws to annul his impending deportation. Lawyers representing Juan Rodriguez filed a lawsuit Monday on the unprecedented grounds that Rodriguez’s deportation would violate his family’s religious beliefs, specifically a Seventh Day Adventist requirement that requires families to remain together. Rodriguez’s lawyers hope that their lawsuit will be upheld based on the 1993 Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA) which “ensures that interests in religious freedom are protected.” Rodriguez is represented by Raed González and receives legal counsel from three other members...

If you are in a country illegally, breaking the laws of the country you are in, shouldn’t you be afraid of being found and deported? Well that’s what U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement chief Thomas Homan said Tuesday in response to a growing cry from liberal activists complaining about ICE agents enforcing federal law. Anyone in the country without authorization can be arrested at any time. And those who have been ordered deported by judges and who did not show up for hearings (which happened countless times during the Obama years) must be removed from the country if those laws...

In Britain, as in the U.S., when an Islamic terrorist is said to be, “known to law enforcement,” the translation is: “He is being actively ignored by law enforcement.” After the latest terrorist attack in Britain — at least as of this writing — Prime Minister Theresa May bravely announced, “Enough is enough!” What is the point of these macho proclamations after every terrorist attack? Nothing will be done to stop the next attack. Political correctness prohibits us from doing anything that might stop it. Poland doesn’t admit Muslims: It has no terrorism. Japan doesn’t admit Muslims: It has no...

NEW YORK (AP) — A crackdown on illegal immigration under President Donald Trump has driven some poor people to take a drastic step: opt out of federal food assistance because they are fearful of deportation, activists and immigrants say. People who are not legal residents of the U.S. are not eligible to take part in what is formally known as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. But many poor families include a mix of non-legal residents and legal ones, such as children who have citizenship because they were born in the U.S. In those cases, it is often an adult...

During a Friday interview with NPR’s Latino USA and anchor Maria Hinojosa, Los Angeles mayor Eric Garcetti said that increased immigration enforcement from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) could lead to growing tensions in his city, to the point that it could be the “tinderbox” on the scale of the 1992 Los Angeles Riots. Here is the transcript from the interview: GARCETTI: If something goes wrong, I fear a tinderbox out there, where people will suddenly say “no” and try to defend, you know, keep that person from being taken. That’s a very dangerous situation. That’s dangerous for those officers....

In a speech otherwise laden with praise for President Trump, Rep. Roger Marshall broke ranks on immigration, questioning the feasibility of a mammoth border wall and saying mass deportation would wreck Kansas’ economy. Marshall represents Kansas’ 1st District, a sprawling, mostly rural and agrarian district that covers the western two-thirds of the state. He said the U.S. needs to revise its immigration policies and document those who come to the United States to work in the farms and feedlots....

It is not just irresponsible but ludicrous that Congress and the president would ignore the need for comprehensive immigration reform even as government agents round up and deport scores of the undocumented who deserve an avenue to legal residency in this country. In a special report titled “The Undocumented,” staff writer Luis Ferré Sadurni shared stories of immigrants who entered the country illegally or overstayed their visas and are now living in fear that any day might bring their arrest by the Department of Homeland Security Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). These are men and women living otherwise law-abiding lives...

Ramon Ruiz Ortiz of Moreno Valley went to San Bernardino’s U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services office at 10 a.m. May 11 to interview for a green card giving him permanent residency. By 7 p.m., he’d been deported to Tijuana. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or ICE, officials said he applied using a false name and that he had been removed previously and then had returned here illegally, making him ineligible for a green card, according to ICE. Now, his family and an attorney representing the Mexican Consulate in San Bernardino are trying to figure out what happened to the man...

WASHINGTON (AP) - Supreme Court decisions in a half-dozen cases dealing with immigration over the next two months could reveal how the justices might evaluate Trump administration actions on immigration, especially stepped up deportations. Some of those cases could be decided as early as Monday, when the court is meeting to issue opinions in cases that were argued over the past six months. The outcomes could indicate whether the justices are retreating from long-standing decisions that give the president and Congress great discretion in dealing with immigration, and what role administration policies, including the proposed ban on visits to the...

A Sunday “60 Minutes” report detailed the story of Roberto Beristain, an immigrant deported to Mexico after being in the U.S. for nearly 20 years. Family and friends of the Granger, Ind., business owner spoke with the CBS News program, expressing frustration that someone with no criminal record was separated from his wife and children, who are all American citizens. “It just feels wrong,” Kimberly Glowacki, a resident of the same town, told “60 Minutes.” Michelle Craig, who voted for President Trump, said she did so because Trump promised to deport dangerous criminals. "This is not the person he said...

In many ways, President Trump’s attempts to implement his hard-line immigration policies have not gone very well in his first three months. His travel ban aimed at some Muslim-majority countries has been blocked by the courts, his U.S.-Mexico border wall has gone nowhere in Congress, and he has retreated, at least for now, on his vow to target illegal immigrants brought here as children. But one strategy that seems to be working well is fear. The number of migrants, legal and illegal, crossing into the United States has dropped markedly since Trump took office, while recent declines in the number...

U.S. Chief Justice John Roberts took issue on Wednesday with the Trump administration's stance in an immigration case, saying it could make it too easy for the government to strip people of citizenship for lying about minor infractions. Roberts and other Supreme Court justices indicated support for a deported ethnic Serb immigrant named Divna Maslenjak over her bid to regain her U.S. citizenship after it was stripped because she falsely stated her husband had not served in the Bosnian Serb army in the 1990s after Yugoslavia's collapse. Roberts seemed particularly concerned that the government was asserting it could revoke citizenship...

California State Senate President Pro Tem Kevin De Léon (D-Los Angeles) said last Tuesday that “half his family” was in the country illegally, using false documents, and eligible for deportation under President Trump’s new executive order against “sanctuary” jurisdictions. De Léon, who introduced the bill, made his remarks at a hearing in Sacramento on SB54, the bill to make California a “Sanctuary State.” He said (at 1:27:34 in the video that follows): … I can tell you half of my family would be eligible for deportation under [President Donald Trump’s] executive order, because if they got a false Social Security...

The Obama administration left the government’s deportation force in disarray, according to a new report Thursday from the Homeland Security inspector general, which found deportation officers are so overloaded that they lose track of important cases, leaving illegal immigrants roaming communities when they could have been kicked out. The problem is so bad that officers may even be losing track of critical national security cases, the inspector general said. The surge of illegal immigrants under President Obama made the situation worse, adding hundreds of thousands of cases to the docket, even though officers weren’t given any new tools to help...

USA Today reported Tuesday that an illegal immigrant protected by Barack Obama’s amnesty was deported in February after spending an evening with his girlfriend. However, a Department of Homeland Security spokesman told The Daily Caller that this story is false because Juan Manuel Montes Bojorquez did not receive amnesty and was caught climbing over a border fence when he was detained. The USA Today story said that Bojorquez, 23, was apprehended by Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents while he was waiting for a car ride to pick him up. According to the article, he told the officers he left...

PHOENIX -Marco Tulio Coss learned heartbreaking news for his family Wednesday afternoon. He walked out of ICE headquarters in downtown Phoenix knowing his days in the United States were numbered. Thirty to be exact. "I don't have a criminal record,” he said. “I'm clean." His story is like many others: He has been here for 18 years, he has no criminal history other than a minor traffic stop, and he works on a permit issued by the same department that has now decided to kick him out of the country. His scheduled deportation date is May 12 at 10 a.m....

CINCINNATI -- A federal court has ruled against Maribel Trujillo, a Fairfield mother of four whose deportation local political and religious leaders rallied to oppose. A three-judge panel at Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals denied Trujillo's petition for an emergency stay of removal Tuesday afternoon, clearing the way for federal authorities to transport her back to Mexico. Trujillo's attorney Emily Brown said they decided not to appeal the full Sixth Circut; rather, Brown said she "(hopes) ICE will use its discretion to do the right thing and not deport (Trujillo)." Trujillo and Brown did file a motion to the Board...
