Vladimir Putin has been one of the most talked about figures in Russia, and now Showtime is about to release “The Putin Interviews,” a new documentary series where he will sit down for a talk with famed director Oliver Stone.   This is a project Stone has been working on for two years, traveling to Moscow and Sochi more than a dozen times to speak with the Prime Minister of Russia. The trailer shows his most recent talk with Putin this past February, where he gets right down to brass tacks and asks the question every Hillary Clinton supporter...
  • Film Review: "Awake: A Dream From Standing Rock," is Full Scaremongering Claims and No Evidence

AWAKE, a Dream from Standing Rock is a new documentary from controversial filmmaker Josh Fox. And I'm using the “truthful” definition of “controversial filmmaker”—which apparently means that the ends justify the means and lies and omissions are acceptable as long as it helps promote the cause. I first came across Josh Fox's “controversial” (read: unethical) style of filmmaking in Gasland, the film that started the international anti-fracking movement. In Gasland, Fox claimed fracking led to people being able to light their water on fire. He promoted the shocking scene of a flaming household faucet and frightened millions in the process....
  • Among Steve Bannon’s filmmaking oeuvre, two documentaries sought a public TV audience

Even as President Trump seeks to end all federal funding to CPB, one of his most infamous aides has firsthand knowledge of the opportunities public media presents to independent filmmakers. White House Chief Strategist Steve Bannon, the former Breitbart News executive chair and a ringmaster of the white nationalist “alt-right” movement, previously led a very different — some might say alternative — career in the film industry. And two of the films he executive-produced have associations with PBS and CPB. Rickover: The Birth of Nuclear Power, a documentary about the Navy officer who oversaw development of the world’s first nuclear-powered...

A documentary on President Trump’s former campaign adviser Roger Stone is coming soon to Netflix. “Get Me Roger Stone” will premiere May 12, the streaming service announced Wednesday. “I’m an agent provocateur,” Stone says in a trailer for the doc. “I revel in your hatred, because if I weren’t effective, you wouldn’t hate me.” The film “traces the monumental impact that Stone, the youngest person called before the Watergate grand jury and a self-described ‘dirty trickster’, has made on modern GOP history — connecting Nixon, Roy Cohn and Reagan with SuperPACs, lobbying, the 2000 election, all the way to the...
  • "Trumped: Inside the Greatest Political Upset of All Time"

During the 2016 election, Showtime ran a series called "The Circus" featuring the (liberal) "journalists" Mark Halperin, Mark McKinnon, and John Heilemann. Using documentary footage from the campaign, sprinkled with a few "backstage interviews" (very few with Cankles, a couple with Trump, a LOT with Roger Stone), the series concluded the week after the election. Now, it has been turned into a documentary film, "Trumped: Inside the Greatest Political Upset of All Time." Except it should be entitled "Trump Won but We Can't Begin to Tell You Why, Nor Do We Want To". Although a few non-white Trump supporters are...

Four reels, discovered by researchers at the Eisenhower Library in 2014, were found to contain the first ever documentary of the D-Day landings. Intended as an initial report and produced in only days, the film was screened for military leadership and is mentioned in OSS reports as having been viewed by Winston Churchill, with copies 'flown to President Roosevelt and Mr. Stalin.' Apparently forgotten in the climactic weeks and months that followed, the film was cataloged as separate, non-sequential reels rather than a single production. The film, lost and forgotten for decades, was digitized by the US National Archives and...

The subjects of a TV documentary series about the Ku Klux Klan abruptly canceled last week by A&E allege to Variety that significant portions of what was filmed were fabricated by the producers. Some KKK leaders divulged that they were paid hundreds of dollars in cash each day of filming to compel them on camera to distort the facts of their lives to fit the documentary’s predetermined narrative: tension between Klan members and relatives of theirs who wanted to get out of the Klan. The findings are based on an exclusive Variety investigation based on interviews with over two dozen...
  • I Spy With My 5 Eyes an interactive peek into shadowy world of digital surveillance

Superficially at least, there may be a rich irony to Justin Pemberton’s intriguing interactive documentary I Spy With My 5 Eyes. The Canadian-New Zealand coproduction is a chilling cautionary tale about the changing nature of surveillance, making a convincing case that our daily actions are leaving glaring digital footprints that government spy agencies can easily access. I Spy With My 5 Eyes is also interactive — visitors are encouraged to share their views on this controversial topic. So, in essence, aren’t people being asked to go online and share their views about the dangers of sharing too much online?

A US judge has ordered the immediate prison release of Brendan Dassey, whose case featured in Netflix's Making a Murderer documentary. The Wisconsin man's murder conviction was overturned this summer, however, prosecutors are appealing. The 27-year-old, who has learning difficulties, and his uncle Steven Avery were convicted of murdering a young woman, Teresa Halbach, in 2005. Avery and Dassey, who was 16 at the time, were sentenced to life in prison.

Conservative Review recently attended the New York screening of Katie Couric’s new documentary, “I Voted?”, which explores the problem of unreliable voting technology and “voter integrity.” Director Jason Grant Smith has marketed the film as “non-partisan,” but with Couric as the executive producer, we had our doubts. “I Voted?” addresses a variety of concerns regarding the United States electoral system — from the “amateurs” operating polling places, to untraceable ballot machines that make recounts virtually impossible, to online hacking by foreign enemies (naturally, Vladimir Putin has a cameo), to the inconsistencies that occur with state-regulated voting.

A young boy, 10 years old or so, faces the camera.Like many young boys he is happy to be interviewed. This is war-torn Iraq, however, so he tells of the day ISIS came to his village. What took place, horror after horror, he starts to recount. It is hard to accept that one so young has already seen so much evil. Gradually, his urgent retelling of what happened slows and he breaks down. It is hard to watch as the tears flow down his cheeks. He tries to stem them, brushing them away Â… but to no avail. His grief...

One of the biggest stars of the fall TV season so far is a 6-year-old child beauty queen who has been dead nearly two decades. After three documentary specials have already been run (with a TV movie in the works), the biggest broadcast project, "The Case of: JonBenét Ramsey," airs Sunday, Sept. 18 and Monday, Sept. 19 on CBS. In it, Connecticut's famed criminalist Dr. Henry Lee is one of a handful of original investigators of the case who have been reunited with a pair of new experts for the special to re-examine the death of the little girl in...

The Secret History of the Democratic Party has quickly become the top-grossing documentary of the year to date at the U.S. box office, amassing $5.2 million in its first dozen days. D'Souza's 100-minute film takes doesn't pretend to be non-partisan. A trailer for the doc refers to Bill and Hillary Clinton...as "depraved crooks" and Democrats as "the party of corruption" that is associated with slavery, lynchings, the KKK and forced sterilization.

Hillary Clinton’s stumbling campaign for the White House is geared to take advantage of voter ignorance at every turn: ignorance about the government’s ability to promote prosperity, ignorance about the impact of minimum wage laws, ignorance about the damage done by her policies while serving as Secretary of State, and – the point of this piece – ignorance about the Supreme Court’s 2010 decision in Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission. Leftist politicians from Barack Obama down have created a mythology that Citizens United was a disastrous decision because it allows big, rich, right-wing corporations to buy our elections. Katie Couric apologized on Monday after days of criticism about a “misleading” edit in her new documentary that made gun rights advocates “appear to be speechless” when asked a simple question about gun control. “I take responsibility,” the news anchor wrote in a statement on the website for Under the Gun, a documentary about gun violence in America that she narrated and produced.
