And I'm using the “truthful” definition of “controversial filmmaker”—which apparently means that the ends justify the means and lies and omissions are acceptable as long as it helps promote the cause. I first came across Josh Fox's “controversial” (read: unethical) style of filmmaking in Gasland, the film that started the international anti-fracking movement. The subjects of a TV documentary series about the Ku Klux Klan abruptly canceled last week by A&E allege to Variety that significant portions of what was filmed were fabricated by the producers. Some KKK leaders divulged that they were paid hundreds of dollars in cash each day of filming to compel them on camera to distort the facts of their lives to fit the documentary’s predetermined narrative: tension between Klan members and relatives of theirs who wanted to get out of the Klan. Superficially at least, there may be a rich irony to Justin Pemberton’s intriguing interactive documentary I Spy With My 5 Eyes. The Canadian-New Zealand coproduction is a chilling cautionary tale about the changing nature of surveillance, making a convincing case that our daily actions are leaving glaring digital footprints that government spy agencies can easily access. I Spy With My 5 Eyes is also interactive — visitors are encouraged to share their views on this controversial topic. So, in essence, aren’t people being asked to go online and share their views about the dangers of sharing too much online?

A US judge has ordered the immediate prison release of Brendan Dassey, whose case featured in Netflix's Making a Murderer documentary. The Wisconsin man's murder conviction was overturned this summer, however, prosecutors are appealing. The 27-year-old, who has learning difficulties, and his uncle Steven Avery were convicted of murdering a young woman, Teresa Halbach, in 2005. Avery and Dassey, who was 16 at the time, were sentenced to life in prison.

Conservative Review recently attended the New York screening of Katie Couric’s new documentary, “I Voted?”, which explores the problem of unreliable voting technology and “voter integrity.” Director Jason Grant Smith has marketed the film as “non-partisan,” but with Couric as the executive producer, we had our doubts. “I Voted?” addresses a variety of concerns regarding the United States electoral system — from the “amateurs” operating polling places, to untraceable ballot machines that make recounts virtually impossible, to online hacking by foreign enemies (naturally, Vladimir Putin has a cameo), to the inconsistencies that occur with state-regulated voting.
