Results point to a single origin for modern canines and push back the timing by thousands of years. Researchers chasing the origin of modern dogs find that canines were domesticated once, between 20,000 and 40,000 years ago. The results, published on 18 July in Nature Communications1, push back against a controversial 2016 study2 that suggested dogs were domesticated twice. Taiwan has passed landmark animal protection laws imposing fines for the consumption of dog and cat meat as well as jail time for those who kill and torture animals. The Animal Protection Act amendments approved by the Legislative Yuan on Tuesday punish the sale, purchase or consumption of dog or cat meat with fines ranging from NT$50,000 to NT$2 million. The amendment's sponsor, Kuomintang Legislator Wang Yu-min, said that while some localities already had measures banning dog and cat meat consumption, national legislation was needed. An intelligent dog in Virginia managed to open multiple doors in an effort to escape from a veterinary hospital. Aquia-Garrisonville Animal Hospital shared a post stating a 10-year-old Great Pyrenees, named General, had managed to escape from the facility in Stafford at about 4 a.m. Monday morning.
