  • Jersey Boys -- 4 stars and 4 thumbs up

We saw Jersey Boys last night in our local movie theatre. It is the story of Frankie Valli and the 4 Seasons, a singing group of the 1960s, and their rise to fame. It is an adaptation of a stage play. The movie is directed and produced by Clint Eastwood, which is eyebrow raising in itself because it does not seem like a typical Eastwood topic. I approached this movie with some trepidation because of the big, fat R after the title. Normally, I avoid R-rated movies; and I could not find out why it received this rating. However, the...

  • Obama's Gettysburg skip may confirm Clint Eastwood's thoughts about him

It is hard to know whether to be outraged or grateful that President Obama has decided to skip the 150th anniversary of Lincoln’s famous speech at Gettysburg this week. He’s sending his secretary of the Interior (who?), when even Attorney General Eric Holder would be more appropriate. It is not Obama’s first act of diffidence or disdain for American icons; think of his casual and intermittent relationship with the American flag pin on his lapel, for example, along with some of his overseas pronouncements tacitly attesting to his ambition to embody some kind of “post-American” ethos to go along with...

Clint Eastwood, whose cinematic legacy can match anyone in Hollywood history, turns 83 years old today. He first drew attention as Rowdy Yates on TV's "Rawhide," but he became a star on the big screen at age 34 when he created The Man With No Name in Sergio Leone's great Western "A Fistful of Dollars." He would reprise the character for Leone in "For a Few Dollars More" and "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly."

He's one of the few big-time celebrities who is also a big-time Republican. But Clint Eastwood has veered from the viewpoint of many Conservatives in one regard: the actor signed the American Foundation for Equal Rights’s “Friend of the Court” brief this week. In doing so, the actor became one of over 100 prominent Republicans to support this gay rights organization's document, which it has filed with the Supreme Court. n April, the highest court in the land will listen to arguments about the legality of California’s Proposition 8, an amendment that passed in 2008 and which declares “only marriage...

The brief, which will be released later this evening, has signatures from more than 100 Republican and conservative activists. It involves the case before the Supreme Court, seeking to overturn CA's Proposition 8, which banned same-sex marriage in the state. A well-placed GOP source provided Breitbart News with an early glimpse of the brief.

"It's almost like they don't give a damn," he said, in a "Squawk Box" interview that aired Friday. The Oscar-winning director who's also known for his tough-guy roles asked rhetorically, "If they don't give a damn, why did they expect anybody else to?" Nobody in Hollywood has been clamoring to make “Ishtar 2.” Or re-imagine “Howard the Duck.” Why? Because they were BOMBS, that’s why. So why in the name of “Gigli” would Mitt Romney’s campaign — er, Karl Rove’s American Crossroads superPAC – dust off Clint Eastwood to make a campaign commercial touting Mitt? All it does is remind people of the great Eastwood’s royal bomb at the RNC just two months ago. Yes, his ad-libbed “conversation” with a chair. But in politics, attention spans are Tweet-short these days. So here’s Clint coughing up his full-throat-of-gravel Clintyness backing Mitt. . . .
  • Empty Set Chair: Obama Backer Beyoncé Bows Out of Eastwood Film

Beyoncé is one of the biggest stars in the country, a beautiful singer at the top of her profession. She isn't an A-list movie star... yet. Her work in the celebrated "Dreamgirls" didn't make that happen, nor did appearances in "The Pink Panther," "Obsessed" or "Austin Powers in Goldmember." Clint Eastwood could have changed all that. The actor/director wanted Beyoncé to star in his planned remake of "A Star Is Born." Any Eastwood project is instantly Oscar bait, and his track record suggests he could have transformed the stunning chanteuse into an A-lister with just one film. Now, we'll never...

GRAND HAVEN TOWNSHIP, MI -- An Ottawa County diversity group is claiming that a Grand Haven area man's political statement -- a lawn chair hanging from a tree -- is racially insensitive and should be taken down. Leaders of the Lakeshore Ethnic Diversity Alliance have scheduled a "community conversation" public meeting next Thursday at the Grand Haven Community Center to discuss the issue. The lawn chair is suspended by a rope from a tree along Comstock Street near Peach Plain Elementary School and, according to the homeowner, is simply a take-off on Clint Eastwood's much-ballyhooed "empty chair rant" speech at...

Clint Eastwood says he doesn't really care about the people who ripped his impromptu "chair" speech at the Republican National Convention, saying he was just expressing his feelings. Eastwood appeared on "Good Morning America" this morning and the 82-year-old explained one of the reasons he didn't want to give a traditional speech off a teleprompter that night is because "I didn't have my glasses with me ... so I wouldn't have been able to read it." Instead, he explained: "So then I’m just sitting there and the guy says, ‘You wanna sit down?’ and I said ‘No, but put that...

Joe Scarborough has suggested that Clint Eastwood was drunk when he gave his RNC speech. Today's Morning Joe opened with a clip of Mitt Romney telling David Gregory that it was a thrill to have Eastwood speak on his behalf at the RNC, and that he felt Eastwood spoke "from the heart." Scarborough came on and said that rather than speaking from the heart, Eastwood spoke more "from the bottom of a bottle." View the video here.

For several days after Clint Eastwood amazed and amused the Republican National Convention by addressing an invisible President Obama, the reviews were mixed and contentious. Even Republicans were nervous that Eastwood had gone too far. Meanwhile, liberals had no doubt that Eastwood’s senile disrespect would destroy, or at least upstage, Romney’s candidacy. On Sunday, everything changed. President Obama announced that Eastwood was one of his favorite actors. I think this was a gesture of surrender. The more that Democrats talked about how misguided Eastwood was, the more people wanted to look at the video for themselves. Couldn’t have that. Here’s...
